Or was it Vince just taking more talent from ECW just because?
I know when Benoit and the group arrived, that pretty much stopped all his momentum.
Was he ever promised a title run or anything big in the WWE?

He handed Angle his first loss. If they had no plans for him, then why have him do that?

I feel like they did, but they got the Radicalz a week after his debut and they kinda forgot about him as he was feuding with Boss Man and Albert at the next PPV at No Way Out that year.

Kinda/sorta. Like, they did like him, but there were a lot of balls to keep in the air in 2000, and Tazz's understandable reluctance to get neck fusion surgery and risk complications meant there was a definite ceiling on him.

And let's face it - once they were around each other, Tazz's size soured Vince very quickly.

Bingo. His health was garbage by the time he hit the WWE and I don't think he/they realized how bad

Benoit was the better version of him. Once they got him (along with the others), the writing was on the wall for ol' Tazz.

Eh, Tazz was the way better promo and arguably had a better look, but yeah, if you're going to go with one fairly short guy, Benoit was the better pick given his health was better and he had a higher profile from the WCW jump.

With his neck being as f***ed as it was, if there were it was short lived.

I hated when he wore that shitty little tracksuit.
To me, he went from main eventer to absolute jobber with that change alone.

He handed Angle his first loss. If they had no plans for him, then why have him do that? I think by the Rumble, they already realized Angle wasn't going to need a crutch like an undefeated streak to get/stay over and he could play off losses for even more heat ie claiming the loss didn't count since the Tazzmission is an illegal hold. So they probably figured, "Hey this will be a hot start to the Rumble" and it was.

Weirdly, knowing what we know now, if 2000 Taz had squared up Vince and been like “think I’m too short to be legit? Come at me bro” and stretched him, he’d maybe have seen Austin-like success.

And let's face it - once they were around each other, Tazz's size soured Vince very quickly. That's pretty close to my personal theory. Vince was probably ready to hand Tazz the world until he saw him standing next to somebody like the Undertaker. He probably thought Tazz was a hoss that overwhelmed people, rather than a vicious, thick and short dude.

Doesn't the Vince suddenly realised he was short theory fall a bit flat when he'd already worked with/for the WWF multiple times before his official debut? It wasn't like he'd shrunk in the couple of years since he'd last been on WWF Television for the ECW invasion, he was a short man, there's no disguising that.

It may be a combination of things, in truth, but I think he got injured early on, and I hear Vince sours on people if they're prone to being hurt (except Edge)

It's common for guys doing one-shots and try-outs to never even see McMahon when they work a show. Vince is dealing with the show itself and the high-carders, not the dark match guys. It's a different world when you're standing next to the guy every week in gorilla position.

So he would have seen Taz (one z at the time) in person.
