For whatever reason, this is the one Alien movie I had on tape growing up, and watched it constantly. I have no doubt some of it is nostalgia, but I love Alien 3.

I honestly remember liking Alien: Resurrection more, but I mean, Winona Ryder and Ron Perlman.

I really like Alien 3, I think it's the whole setup and theme of the location which I find quite unique. An alien planet used as a prison but with architecture that is all very industrial & gothic. The prisoners are seemingly left to do there own thing as there is no way off the rock. The semi-religous faith they have is interesting and they have no weapons to deal with the xenomorph.
Plus the cast of predominantly english actors is incredibly good. Charles Dance, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul McGann, Brian Glover etc ...
Some really hate that they bumped off Newt and Hicks, I was never really bothered by that.

I love the film “Aliens”
So I have a strong dislike for Alien3 just for the killing off Newt and Hicks in such a shitty way. Newt in particular. Because in Aliens.. Ripley becoming this bad ass protective mother who ventures into the heart of the Alien “hive” which is on the brink of nuclear meltdown to rescue Newt, does so by the skin of their teeth... and then fighting the Alien Queen shouting that line, succeeding... Newt calls Ripley “Mommy” .. and the film ends on the optimistic note that Ripley has found a new daughter after finding out her own daughter passed away while she was in hyper sleep.
Then Alien3... oh Newts dead now.. she died in a crash.
It’s just felt cheap and anticlimactic you know. Newt and Ripley didn’t even get to spend a whole day together without something terrible happening. As far as I know post Alien Queen being sucked out of the air lock, Ripley and Newt gathered Bishop and Hicks and went into Hypersleep and then death. Maybe they had some Cornbread before going to sleep... I dunno, I’m only going by what’s seen on screen.
Could you imagine if Tolkien wrote that the Hobbits where killed by I dunno an avalanche on their way back to Hobbiton after the One Ring was destroyed.

I think Alien 3 is a textbook case of a movie being good when viewed in isolation and judged entirely on its own merits, but failing when viewed as part of a series and judged next to the other installments.

oh i'll have to see this wha happun ..... always fascinating about this movie ahh sitting on christmas 92 morning watching it on widescreen vhs i know about the problematic nature of this subject, as it's well known ..... the game is damn good too i HATED the fact they did kill off newt and hicks, would have been a really good mirror for ripley to deal with, given her affliction with the alien itself and then there is the ending of the directors cut ..... OH DEAR!

I liked it.
I agree about the underwhelming off screen death of Newt, but I kind of get why they may have done it. For starters, the actress that played Newt would have been 7 years older, so she would have to be recast. And for another, a young girl on a prison world full of rapists and child molesters and stuff would have made for a very uncomfortable situation to write around. It probably would have detracted from the main story.

This is not a terrible movie, but it is a movie that is conceptually flawed. The decision to kill Hicks and Newt undermines the second film, and the problem with the film is the fact there is no threat. Ripley cannot be killed by the alien and the rest of the cast are interchangable bald violent prisoners who the audience has no reason to care about. A better idea might have been for the film to be set on a colony where Newt and Hicks emerged from hypersleep a decade before Ripley, whose own sleep pod was lost. When Ripley finally emerges, Newt is an adult and is now a hardened ultimate badass after years of being trained by Hicks. That way they could have kept Michael Biehn but recast Newt.

Hate when people do voices and this felt like a really lazy attempt from him
In regards to Aliens 3, they did bad. Decent concept in a meh movie if they actually let people take control

As a standalone I do actually like this film, had a really interesting look to it and was vastly different from the previous two. As a fan of the franchise though, F this movie. Wouldn't mind them doing a Halloween style reboot and make a proper sequel to Aliens, use a time skip and use it to move Newt as the new franchise lead.

Some really hate that they bumped off Newt and Hicks, I was never really bothered by that. I generally like Alien 3, but I do wish they'd kept Newt alive. Not necessarily because it was gut-punch after her managing to survive in Aliens, but I really felt it could have added an extra layer to the film. Ripley having to protect Newt from not only the alien but also from her "allies" in the film could have given it extra weight and dimension.

Loved it. After the disappointment that was ALiens,Instead of a horror/sci combo Aliens was a crappy horror/action film.
Back sometime after this came out got what I was told was a draft of William Gibsons Alien3 script. f*** it was really really good.

For starters, the actress that played Newt would have been 7 years older, so she would have to be recast. Or just say there was a slight malfunction in her pod that, while it kept her asleep, still caused her to age a bit. Keep the same actress, have her mentality be young while in an older body, go from there. ...this is coming from someone that's seen Alien and Aliens but knows next to nothing else about the franchise, for the record.

Isn't it just another case of having to follow up a 10/10 and the only way to go being down?
