Bette Kane, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Barbra Gordon, Harper Row (especially her!). So many established female Bat-Family member you could choose. Tweak their sexual preference and you have a replacement for the cowl that makes sense in one way or another. Sure Brown, Cain, and Row don't have a connection to anything but that can easily be changed by tweaking backstories as well. There is absolutely no need to make up a character for the show when so many already exist.
For the moment though, I'll give the writers the benefit of the doubt that they'll come up with something plausible. Covid-19 came and shortened the season (though how they ended up working just fine) and now this comes out of nowhere to surprise them. Not an easy task to be sure.
Crap, I just realized there's two people already on the show that already fit their requirements and could feasibly become Batwoman. Julia Pennyworth and Sophie are both gay, both have backgrounds in fighting that could work, and both have a connection with everything that is going on with the show currently.

Wish Detective Comics had kept up James Tynion IV idea of it being the Bat-Family group comic, she would have really fit in with everyone in it.

I still hope this entire thing is bogus. Apparently the original source is a post on Reddit, so there's definitely some questions on its veracity. Not that it didn't stop everyone else from running with it, but entertainment news is slow these days.

And now we have official confirmation it's a new character direct from showrunner Caroline Dries. Wilder seems to be the name they're sticking with. Source: TV Line

So pretty much confirming why I don't trust Berlanti. Deep down he's still that same hack who produced Green Lantern.

Yea this show is so dead after season 2 , they somehow think accepting just a new face is somehow more difficult to embrace than a whole new character not even from the comics to just come in and suddenly get to be Batwoman with no connections to anyone on the show.
I can't wait for them to scramble mid season to bring back the Kate character when ratings bottom into the basement.

It sucks, this completely kills my interest in the show and by the end of Season 1 I was really enjoying it. It felt different then the other Arrowverse shows and was really finding its groove. This feels like they’re throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Not the last I checked they were the 2nd best rated show on the CW behind The Flash.

Season 3 we'll see but they have a decent track record of handling their shows and CW is fully behind them. I'm not happy they're bringing in a wholly new character when there are so many to use, but I'm not ready to write off the show as yet.

Moving from Wayne Manor to a van down by the river is pretty spot on metaphor for how this show is going to go.

I stand by this being a really awful decision. You're throwing out everything built during Season 1 for effectively a soft reboot with a character that people have no emotional attachment to. Why the hell would Mary, Sophie, Julia, or Luke care about working with this random stranger? What stakes does Alice have outside of being pissed that this stranger posing as her sister? What investment does she have in {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Hush now looking like Bruce Wayne when she has no real connection with the Wayne family? Maybe Ryan becomes an interesting character in her own right. I'll give it a chance to work out and maybe they bite the bullet and recast Kate and have Ryan here become her own character if shit hits the fan. Otherwise, to quote Randy Orton, stupid, stupid, stupid.

Them not taking the opportunity to use Stephanie Brown is just weird.

IDK how much pushback it would have gotten....but why not just use Cassanda Cain she is/was BatGirl in the comics I think people would have been fine with it.

They just (kinda) used Cassie in the BoP movie, and I feel that's a character that needs a full season of backstory before handing the reigns off to her as a lead

Well, they were definitely hinting at Scarecrow being a thing but they can go f*** themselves for killing off Kate. Not only is this souring me on Batwoman, but I suddenly have a bad taste in my mouth about the whole Arrowverse going forward. My enthusiasm for the whole universe has tanked over this. Except maybe Legends, that manages to be it's own thing
