I don't speak Japanese at all, but it apparently roughly translates to: Please agree with the following campaigns! "Minister of Justice Yoko Kamikawa: I call for severe punishment for insults as soon as possible!" I’m hoping that the severe punishment is that they tell the harassers that Minoru Suzuki knows who they are. That should crack down on harassing behavior immediately.

I think that is a terrible decision, but I feel like if I talk about why this thread is lock city I feel something should be done, and not be like the States' usual "cyberbullying happens/people suffer/feel sad/move on" pattern. But how much is the question.

I'm still sort of amazed the producers of Terrace House have basically not received any kind of scorn here for what happened. Cyberbullying is a problem, no doubt, and more needs to be done about it but you'd think someone would notice the fact that a big part of that abuse came from how Kimura was perceived on the show add to the fact of her mixed race background being showcased and so far really nothing.
Like, in the UK, there was a real lookback of aftercare for people who went on The Jeremy Kyle Show and how shows like that did some real damage to people, the show ending after one of the former subjects committed suicide. Feels like that really needed to happen in Japan.

I think that is a terrible decision, but I feel like if I talk about why this thread is lock city I feel something should be done, and not be like the States' usual "cyberbullying happens/people suffer/feel sad/move on" pattern. But how much is the question. I don't think this'll go too far, even though it sounds like one of those slippery slope laws. Meaning, I think they'll only give the harsh punishments to the most egregious of people who will insult or bully online. I doubt they'll send every Japanese resident to court that says something bad about a politician. There's already been a law that punishes insults and they haven't used it as an excuse to muzzle free speech before. They just want to stop the worst of comments where anyone with a keyboard can say something that jabs a complete stranger and can result in suicidal thoughts, so I only think those comments will get the tougher penalties.

I think people should be able to do something if they've been cyberbullied. Maybe we don't have to go as far as the above law did, but people who are in positions to punish whenever it gets out of hand should.
I've found that Facebook isn't always very responsive when you report a post. Yet they'll hand out FB Jail sentences for the tiniest things. (I was given one for saying "Poopsie" to someone when we discussed the show Dobie Gillis. I had to explain to get out of it.)

There 100% should be consequences for cyber bullying but I definitely feel like this ain't it.
Hana claimed she received 100,000 comments in one of her final posts. How many of those 100,000 passes muster, and thusly how many of them are being prosecuted from this one case?
It runs the risk of being both toothless and an overstep
The platforms should definitely be getting some accountability

I understand the impulse, but punishing people for being mean online is a REALLY goddamn slippery slope.

I understand the impulse, but punishing people for being mean online is a REALLY goddamn slippery slope. Yeah... I'm really interested to say what happens with this going forward. On one hand, something needs to be done to avoid these type of things. There is being mean and there is also going WAY too far. In the case of Hana Kimura, it went too far. However, it isn't always cut and dry with respect to what is "going too far".

I don't know what the right way to handle this is. All I know is that I still miss her.

I’m glad some kind of ruling has been put in place. I’ve been thinking about it since I read about it a few days ago and the only way I can see this maybe working would be if they are punishing direct abuse like via tagging or going into DM’s. It’s not nice but shouting “ImSoFudinGreat is a dick and should kill themselves” into the void of Twitter or anywhere online is “ok”, but once it’s “@imsofudgingreat is a dick and should kill themselves” or entering the DM’s where there is a very high chance the person is seeing it is where it should be punishable.
Still can’t believe it’s been just over 2 years since Hana died. Everyone said she was an amazing person, and when I saw her live vs Bea Priestley in 2019 she was stunning in person and felt and looked like a star.

Japan has a written constitution, written by the victorious Americans so something resembling the first amendment probably exists and would be used to appeal any prosecutions.
Local governments have passed bills punishing hate speech by large fines successfully, citing public safety concerns and as a result far-right marches through minority neighborhoods, a common sight ten years ago are largely unheard of today. Perhaps with the aid of skilled lawyers city governments might have more luck with coming up with something workable.

it's a difficult line in regards to social media, like something needs to be done with how easy it is to create a fake profile. A few years ago I remember on Twitter a guy with a dog as a picture just starting laying into my appearance, like really, really cruel stuff (and I'm someone who struggles with what they look like for years), before I blocked them I went on there profile and they had a lot insulting people he didn't agree with on whatever points over many months, like something needs to be done to stop this being so easy whether you are a regular person or celebrity
