Why did Steve Williams agree to work with the Oklahoma gimmick? He was friends with JR, but did they have a falling out before he went to WCW? Was he mad about the Brawl For All or what? What was the deal there?

I'd assume that WCW just offered him a big enough contract to make it worth his while.

In his rf shoot Doc said that he had animosity for Jim Ross during that time, he blamed JR for the whole Brawl for All debacle leaving Dr Death crippled, that’s why he had no problem doing the skit.

Yeah, Doc felt a bit abandoned by JR after getting dicked over regarding several things toward the end of his run there. He kept getting told stuff, then it was changed last-minute on him. When they told him he was being sent to FMW in a talent-exchange, he refused and was fired; he felt JR set him up on that one as a way to get him out of the company without having to be the one to do it.

Lol don’t forget that he almost got repackaged with that kabuki mask bullshit. The brawl for all legit killed him, after getting knocked out apparently Vince wanted to change his look.

FWIW, JR just told his side of the story on his podcast a few weeks back. I honestly can't remember all the details and don't want to misquote him.

It took Doc years and years to forgive Ross.

When Doc returned from his Brawl For All injury, WWE tried to repackage him as a kabuki-masked mystery man. It lasted one whole episode, with him attacking Bart Gunn. Either later in that ep or in the next week's show, Doc (back to his regular self) and JR as his manager came out as heels and buried the whole kabuki thing for what it was: Stupid.

From Something to Wrestle With. Bruce Prichard said that after the knock out, Vince lost all faith in Doc and wanted to repackage him with a kabuki mask as a mute heel. Prichard was gonna be his manager and cut promos for him in a Japanese accent. They filmed one take and it was so bad that they cancelled the gimmick immediately. Doctor Death did wrestled with the mask once in Memphis though. It was sad.

FMW? As in, Onita's FMW? This is the first I've heard of this.

HBK went over as well to ref a match. Supposedly, Shawn going was to make up for Doc refusing to go work a match there after FMW was promised him. I have no idea what WWF/E got out of the deal.

I’d presume that they were trying to steal Hayabusa would be my guess, or it may have tied into the FMW/ECW deal from around that time somehow since Paul was all but on the WWF payroll already. as for the kabuki mask deal that was at the same time that JR hired carpenters to build his own announce table in front of the regular one want it or was that a different time?

FMW made sure to use footage of Shawn as a ref in the opening packages to everyone of those cheesy Tokyo Pop DVDs that came out in the early 00s

Yeah, I was watching some random FMW stuff and Kodo Fuyuki was arguing with someone about who knows what, and Shawn appeared on the FMW-Tron and basically told both guys to shut up and put on the wrestling matches already.

It was a scummy thing for him to do, no matter how he felt he was treated by WWE. To willingly go along with a gimmick which mocked JR's disability was disgusting.

For the sake of context and not to absolve Ferrara of the mocking, but the gimmick started in WWF, with Ferrara, Doc and JR all involved in the angle.

I just remember Ferrara doing the impression backstage to make Vince laugh. During a Sunday Night Heat show, Tiger Ali Singh called a "fan" (Ed Ferrara) from ringside and brought him into the ring, putting a cowboy hat on him and offering him $500 to impersonate JR. Ferrara then proceeded to do his JR impression until JR and Doc came out, with Doc destroying both of them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXeiQ6oeg2g
