Hi. HR professional by trade here. No company in any industry with an even halfway competent HR team would EVER include language in a contract that they can't fire someone for something they did before working for that company that isn't discovered until after the fact. Especially not something that's potentially a criminal matter. So either Impact has the most incompetent HR team on the planet of Joey is a bald-faced liar. I mean.....I could believe either I would believe it if somehow both were true

If impact HR was dumb enough to give this fool that type of contract, sweet Jesus their roster is wrecked. I just don't see it tho especially since they bring in people with questionable reps and Joey ain't that special to get that type of deal. They'd be out of their mind and should been a red flag from jump

Impact giving Joey Ryan a "You can't fire me for potential past events that unearth" clause seems about as likely as them giving Tessa Blanchard a "You can't fire me for being an uncooperative asshole" clause.

Joey: Those people touched my dick willingly Everyone else: But what about the people who didn't do it for the gimmick?

Especially not something that's potentially a criminal matter. So either Impact has the most incompetent HR team on the planet of Joey is a bald-faced liar. More than likely, such a clause would cover a pre-existing accusation that was reasonably known about before hand. Say if #SpeakingOut happened before he went to Impact, they couldn't fire him based off those accusations since they were public knowledge when they signed the contract. Any lawyer worth their salt on the Impact side would argue the #SpeakingOut accusations aren't covered by such a clause since the actual accusation's weren't known about until after the contract was signed.

There's not a CHANCE that clause is in his contract. Literally, I'm calling it right now. Not a goddamn chance. For one thing, because it's like unenforceable. It would put a company in a place where no matter what a talent is done they'd have to keep him and there's not a chance in hell that's true. There's no way that if he sues and Impact takes it to court there isn't a courtroom in the world that isn't going to take "We thought having some accused of sexual impropriety 14 times in our industry was too much of a safety risk to our wrestlers" as undue hardship. It doesn't exist because it's too stupid on it's face to exist. Exactly. No company in the entire world wants to respond to 14 accusations of inappropriate behavior with “Eh, well, not much we can do. None of those didn’t happen during his latest run here so we’re just going to let him keep working. It’s in the contract, you see”. That is the most easily preventable PR shitstorm for a company. Even in situations where an employee does get some sort of clause like that put in, there is ALWAYS an out for the company. Even with something like tenure at universities. A professor gets tenure and, yeah, it can be hard to fire them later, but if they do something extreme and break laws or rules, then they can be fired. No company would be dumb enough to put that in a contract and have no way out for themselves. Also, why the HELL would Impact give Joey Ryan of all people a clause like that? If you do give someone a clause like that, you give that to someone like John Cena, or Roman Reigns, or AJ Styles, or Chris Jericho. Someone that is going to be a cornerstone franchise player for you. That ain't Joey Ryan. He comes into my office demanding I put that clause in his contract, I'm laughing him out of the building.

How would one even demand that clause without sounding like a creep who has dead hookers under the floorboards? If it were something like "public statements" and he was trying to future-proof any possibility a shitstorm comes up over old tweets, that'd be one thing. But if someone wants to be contractually covered from being fired over any past misdeeds yet unearthed I'm going to assume they are the biggest liability in the world and have a whole bunch of shit that's just waiting to come to the surface. That's not a normal request someone makes without being afraid of something coming back to bite them. It's just not.

I think that people are forgetting that Ryan was very much in demand when he signed for Impact because fans loved his 'totally not using his position as a major Indy name to pressure other workers into playing along with his dick stuff' thing. The WWE wanted him, with his he connections could have waltzed into AEW, so he was a big get for Impact, so it's understandable they let him set the terms, same deal as Marty and ROH. It was probably dold as 'I play a sleaze, if someone takes it the wrong way and kicks up a fuss, I want to make sure you have my back'. His gimmick was very much designed to hide his behaviour in plain sight, after all.
Even if they can't fire him, they can and will stop using him on TV, so they'll probably just take the L on this and pay him to go away.

That's a problem I have with people saying "don't blame the gimmick" and "other wrestlers have had sexual gimmicks." Ryan had his own promotion, and had lots of clout when he was doing that gimmick. To me it's different than, say, a past WWE midcarder having a crude character. Like you pointed out, I feel like there was lots of pressure to play along with the dick stuff because it was "viral." It's something that bugged me even before this stuff came out about Ryan.

They may no longer be TNA, but they've got a long way to go before we can believe they're not still staffed by some of the most incompetent people in the business.

My guess is that there’s a standard clause in the contract that Ryan is misinterpreting (whether intentional or not).
