Isn’t that character actually the bridge that crosses Trek over to another fictional universe? Some of the Star Trek games in the 90’s continued that crossover as well, I believe. That would be the Kzinti, shown here in the Animated Series episode The Slaver Weapon: And yeah they hail from the Known Space series by Larry Niven who wrote the aforementioned Slaver Weapon episode. Funny note, after this episode they were never referred to again until episode 7 of Picard where they were finally mentioned onscreen for the first time in 45 plus years. Let's not forget the feline alien stripper in Star Trek V that Kirk dumped into a vat of water.

My friend worked on this show, spent countless hours animating shots on it
I can say that this trailer is not a representation of how the show is going to be. According to them they didn't use like any of the good shots, I guess they're saving them, and even made the tone of the show something that it isn't. It's not mean spirited, it's much more than this trailer depicts so it's a really bad first impression.
Bad marketing might be tanking this show before it starts and it's disheartening given what I've heard on the other end.

This looks like some producers saw Rick and Morty, checked what IP they had and said to some people make a R&M show but with Star Trek. Yeah not remotely interested in this, looks stupid. The showrunner worked on Rick and Morty/Solar Opposites. It's not a ripoff or some focus group thing the style was simply inspired by it. The entire crew apparently watched the pilot for inspiration as well, it and TNG's "Lower Decks" were inspirations for the series.

Honestly I find Rick and Morty ‘style‘ to be its own thing that should kind of stay with Rick and Morty. It would be like this being inspired by Aqua Teen Hunger Force which wouldn’t work for me either. It all seems too immature and a too fast for Star Trek IMO.

In defense of Lower Decks' trailer, the early commercials for the Orville did little justice to the show it actually was and eventually became, so I'm inclined to view LD with a bit of open mind in that regard.

I feel like whoever is currently in charge of Star Trek REALLY hates Star Trek. Alex Kurtzman.

Why does every US cartoon look that these days? That art style sucks hard and it's way overused. Edit: It's more along the lines of Ricky & Morty. At first I was thinking of the Cartoon Network/Webcomic style, which my point stands for still.

I know Rick & Morty made it a style, and Solar Opposites is done by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahon, both of whom work on Ricky & Morty. And then Mike McMahon was hired to make a Star Trek show, so he obviously used the animation style he’s already familiar with. But EVERY? This just happens to be the style employed by these couple of guys.

That Steven Universe style. They even recently changed Toucan Sam into one of these kind of designs! ...Toucan Sam, for god's sakes!

I mean, it’s kind of relieving as a Star Wars fan. Like, we got problems too, but damn. Star Wars got its unwatchable drek out of the way early with the Holiday Special. Trek also had unwatchable drek with the first two TNG seasons.

There's something like 800 total episodes and movies, so it stands to reason that if even as little as 20% of it is bad (and that figure is much higher) you're still looking at hundreds of hours of shit.

Just wanted to bump this to remind that it drops tomorrow. And put its show's description:
""Star Trek: Lower Decks" focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the USS Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi must keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies. The ship's bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shaxs and Doctor T'Ana. This is the second animated spin-off in the franchise after 1973-74's "Star Trek: The Animated Series," but has a decidedly more adult tone and humor."

I can't wait for people to say "Oh, Upper Decker ain't THAT bad", but as far as I'm concerned, it's going to be dreadful like all Star Trek outings.
Star Trek has not earned any goodwill in the past decade.

I won't be one of them, though. I've largely enjoyed the Kelvinverse movies, Discovery, and Picard, but Lower Decks looks like crap.

I mean, it wouldn't be the first show/movie to have an abysmal trailer that turned out to be pretty good in the context of a final product. The uniforms being an homage to old Star Trek Generations action figures is also an amusing deep cut of deep cuts.

Showing the ship run away from battle in the opening credits is certainly a choice.
