I mean, I get that he's a great director and I do understand that you need to have high standards, especially if you're working on some of the productions that Kubrick has had to work on; but there's no real excuse for going to the level that Kubrick has gone to, especially to Shelley Duvall. Like, I don't get why people think that treating people like absolute dogshit will get them to work for you? For all the problems that 2020 has, I like to imagine that at least nobody would get to be as abusive as Kubrick was to the people that he worked with.

What he did to Shelley Duval was insane (making her redo a scene an insane ammount of times) but apparently anyone that has worked with the man will say it comes as no surprise because he is a literal perfectionist to a huge fault.

Genius creator of an art form is a prick? It’s extremely common. Yes, but he also lived in a world that gave us Tom Hanks playing Fred Rogers, so it all balances out.

Yeah Wheddon's not even in the top 20 abusive POS directors. Kubrick could give Hitchcock a run for his money though.

Didn't Duvall have part of her hair falling out? Whedon in no way reaches that level of asshat.

Joss Whedon is a total phony with his girl power crap, if the allegations against him are to be believed. And I can believe them because he treated Charisma Carpenter *and* her character, Cordelia, ABYSMALLY all for the sin of Charisma daring to get pregnant.
I don't think Sarah Michelle Gellar loved working with him, either, IIRC.

Avengers and it's first sequel sucked. It's time to admit it. MCU got exponentially better when The Russo Bros took over.

Movie directors can be quite literal nutcases.
William Friedkin was so disgusted that Ellen Burstyn expressed fear at doing a wirework stunt for The Exorcist he ordered the stunt team to be as rough as possible with her, leading to a permanent spine injury. He also had the charming habit of firing live guns on the set to rattle actors.
Lars von Trier made the cast of Manderlay watch the slaughter of a donkey and then made them eat it.
On Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola locked Martin Sheen in his hotel room for two days, drunk, to build up the level of psychosis he wanted for the scene where Sheen punches a mirror and smears blood on his face (Sheen punched a real mirror, and the blood is his actual blood).
David O. Russell headbutted George Clooney on the set of Three Kings, and tormented Amy Adams during the production of American Hustle to the point where she would hide in her trailer and cry on a daily basis until Christian Bale, not exactly known to be a sensitive soul himself, told Russell to either knock it off or he'd knock him out. And then there was his meltdown during production of I Heart Huckabees, screaming at the cast and crew and throwing props at a PA:
Amongst other things he did to make like hard for her, Roman Polanski refused to allow Faye Dunaway bathroom breaks while filming Chinatown (while allowing everybody else to use the the bathroom as needed), resulting in her being forced to urinate into bottles and cups. Eventually she snapped and threw a cup of fresh piss in his face.
Werner Herzog once pointed a loaded gun in Klaus Kinski's face and told him he would kill him and then himself after Kinski threatened to walk off a movie.
John Frankenheimer would scream in the faces of the actors on the set of Island of Dr. Moreau and slap them to get "the right intensity" for their scenes.
For this scene in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood:
Kurosawa was unhappy with Toshiro Mifune's reactions to the stunt arrows that were scripted to just miss him, so just had real arrow fired at him instead.

I literally just finished watching A Clockwork Orange like 25 minutes ago.
Apparently, he cut David Prowse a break by only doing 6 takes of him having to carry the guy in the wheelchair down the stairs.
Prowse, a bodybuilder, and future Darth Vader went up to Kubrick and said, "I know you're not exactly "One Take Kubrick", but can you please try to get it right pretty quickly?" Others were horrified that he went up to Kubrick like that, but Stanley just laughed and said, "I promise to do my best."
So I guess he had his moments.

Speaking of multiple takes, there's a scene in Heaven's Gate where Kris Kristofferson is cracking a whip. The shot itself is only a couple of seconds, but it took an entire day to film. Michael Cimino made Kristofferson do anywhere between 50 and 150 takes (accounts vary on the exact number of takes, but all agree it took a whole day's shooting). Kristofferson recalled being unable to lift his arm for a couple of days after.
The production of Heaven's Gate is hell of a story in itself.

Read some trivia that when casting for the role of Jack Torrance in “The Shining” over actors considered were Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.. Now, I don’t doubt that Robin Williams would of nailed the role of Jack.. but remember “The Shining” came out in the same year as that live action “Popeye” movie which Williams played the famous Sailor Man... and guess who played Olive Oyl in that film?

Bully backing off when confronted on his bullshit, no surprise there.
