I think the most baffling part of Other M is the controls, mostly for the fact that it was noticed while making it how horribly uncomfortable playing a 3D beat-em-up with a Wiimote was and yet for some reason Sakamoto refused to allow them to add other control options.

That was what killed me about Other M is if they had just used the Nunchuk (and preferably, allowed the classic controller) and got rid of the first-person stuff which was completely unnecessary anyway, the game would've played fine. Or hell, keep the first-person bullshit and still have the Nunchuk so you didn't have to stand still while trying to fire missiles! The f***?! Though honestly, I don't really recall using missiles that much anyway unless it was required to move forward, so eh.

The best thing that happened to Other M's gameplay is that the story was so fundamentally awful that the former's clear flaws got glossed over in analysis until relatively recently.

Honestly, maybe he should have just gone for that in the first place.

Hey, at least he's in a game type where is one button preference for controls actually makes sense. If he can develop something that fits that mold and works with the mobile market, more power to him.

Honestly, maybe he should have just gone for that in the first place. I mean, he already was, back when he started Prope. He's just going back to it now.

I thought the controls for Other M were okay for the most part, but the "switch to first person mode" for missiles was so bad. Like, nothing exemplified that worse than the Metroid Queen boss fight where so much shit is happening at once and you have to frantically switch to FP mode and stand still and fire the missiles while the regular Metroids are swarming you. It was such a mess of a fight.
Those memories of Other M are the only reason I haven't pre-ordered Dread yet. As much as I'm anticipating that game, I don't entirely trust Sakamoto not to pull some bullshit again.

So I actually beat this a few weeks ago for some reason and it was even stranger than I thought it would be.

The problem is that Naka has had such a history of dubious behavior (just look up how he acted during Sonic X-Treme's development) that even with Square Enix's recent string of PR incompetence, it still feels more likely that the latter is the more innocent party in all this.
Yeah, the failure of Balan Wonderworld is somewhat rooted in SE not really understanding the appeal of platformers, but most of it lies in Naka's outdated instincts and stubborn refusal to embrace any sort of genuine complexity in his game design.

The complete tonal shift from the OP to three posts in still cracks me up.
