There was some talented people, but this easily could and should have been a Youtube project.

Me wonders how fast the original G4 would have lasted if it didn’t drift from its original concept.

With ratings like that they were merciful to let it last for nearly a year.

It was always a completely dumb idea to bring it back as an actual network. It died for a reason for one thing, and for another the omnipresence of Youtube has rendered the whole premise of a games-focused TV channel completely pointless because you could look up anything you'd ever want on something like that in greater detail any time you ever wanted to.
Though I will give a shout out to the fact I probably wouldn't have heard of Way of the Samurai back in the day without G4 and I love that stupid game to pieces.

It should have been a YouTube or twitch thing only, G4 died for a reason to begin with.

They should have been a Youtube/Twitch thing and used the brand recognition to get a better class of sponsors and guests to let them hit the ground running. Going guns blazing with a full revival was doomed to failure given mainstream TV's decline, the people they target were the people who cut the cord so couldn't watch them even if they wanted to.

Starting up any channel in the age of cord cutting and streaming services was always going to be the kiss of death. Doesn't help that I don't think it had much promotion to begin with.

Not being american, i can't speak to their content, but couldn't they have made new versions of the shows people remembered and sold them to netflix, Hulu and other services? starting a new channel usually ends in tears, look at Hasbro and The Hub, but they pivoted to making content for other providers again, even expanded with the purchase of eOne and seem to have survived, I#'m sure G4 must have some content, if they thought it was worth reviving to begin with.

G4 didn't really have the kind of content that would've worked for Netflix or Hulu. Services like Twitch would've been their best bet.

The revived G4 should've been a 24 hour Twitch stream with new interactive content in primetime hours, reruns in the off time.
But whoever the shotcallers were clung to the idea that the people who would watch G4 would go back to watching it on TV.
They got Darwin'd.

It really is like they took a survey asking whether folks liked G4 back in the day, and took the affirmative responses as "Let's put it back on TV then!" ignoring so many factors like TV not even working like it did in 2002.

Me wonders how fast the original G4 would have lasted if it didn’t drift from its original concept. it probably still would've died out but if it stayed the same as it was with tech TV and stuff like that before being the cops/ninja warrior channel, the entire online culture would be massively different they were doing things well over a decade before twitch did some of these things if anyone f***ed themselves over in all this it is G4 themselves, they had a great thing going and a channel that people would STOP PLAYING GAMES to watch games on there

Arena was the first exposure I ever had to what we have now with eSports and live streaming

Arena was the first exposure I ever had to what we have now with eSports and live streaming exactly. they had a fantastic thing that people who enjoyed video games like us REALLY enjoyed but completely f***ed themselves over. it was probably the people at the top like it always is with these sorts of things but at the end of the day, they screwed themselves over big time. giant dropped bag.

I really liked Cinematech on the old G4. The After Dark version that showed more mature (and sometimes outright porny) games was pretty fun, too.

Like, how did they not just look at something like Achievement Hunter or Game Grumps and go "maybe we should be in the same general space as them?"
Hell, being part of a larger corporation should have helped make it EASIER to keep afloat than them with all the brand deals and stuff they could get if the network cared.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the original plan WAS to be mostly an internet/Twitch thing. And then the person put in charge of the G4 unit of Comcast (who was a bigwig's son or something) came up with the cracker jack idea of making it into a cable television channel again out of misplaced nostalgia for the Old G4.

They hired a bunch of youtubers like The Completionist... and Austin Creed... and instead of you know using the platform they use went into using TV when almost everyone is leaving broadcast...
