Would Hartman have been more careful with Pyle if he found out about the beating? Are you asking if he ordered the Code Red? Wait, what thread am I in? Haha. Seriously though, would he look for warning signs of a mental breakdown, had he actually woken up and saw the sock bath

My father was retired Navy, his best friend went into the Marines at the same time. My dad's best friend was chewing gum when he got off the bus at boot camp, drill instructor told him to get rid of the gum, he spat it out, and promptly got smacked upside the head. "We don't spit in the Marine Corps, son." That was in the 50s.
I don't think Hartman deserved it, but I certainly understand why it was done. On a side note, Full Metal Jacket is probably in my top five favorite movies.

Would Hartman have been more careful with Pyle if he found out about the beating? Are you asking if he ordered the Code Red? Wait, what thread am I in? Actually he did order the hazing. If you recall him making the whole unit go push ups for Pyle smuggling a donut into the barracks, and he declared the rest of the unit need to “help motivate” Pyle into shaping up. Hartman is like Nurse Ratched. An argument can be made he’s just doing his job-but there is an obvious element of him being drunk on power and getting sadistic joy out of what he inflicts on the recruits. Once the patients see the slightest vulnerability in Nurse Ratched they can never look at her the same way again and she can no longer exert the power over them she previously had. Same for Hartman, which is why he can’t turn off drill sergeant mode when faced with a broken man with a gun; the instant he shows fear in front of the recruits they will never see him the same way again. All the more ridiculous since they were all about yo be shipped out and he wouldn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances in front of them anymore.

I wonder how famous the movie would be if the original choice of drill sgt. had been in the movie rather than R. Lee.
I watched first watched the movie for Vincent D'Onofrio as I really liked him on Law & Order CI but wound up being a huge R. Lee fan and waiting 4 hours in line for him at an auto show autograph appearance.

I wonder how famous the movie would be if the original choice of drill sgt. had been in the movie rather than R. Lee. My favourite bit of trivia about it was Kubrick initially turned Ermey down for the role, citing that he "wasn't vicious enough." It's safe to say Ermey's "Challenge Accepted" response was one of the most emphatic in history, with the subsequent video of him insulting a group of marines taking 250 pages to fully transcribe. Without Ermey in that role I don't think the movie would've been quite as fondly remembered. It'd still be a fine movie, but Ermey is the highlight.
