That was the biggest bomb possible. I don't just mean like marketing hype, but like EVERYONE knew about it, and it still just completely bombed. A film under performing yet still making a profit doesn't count. I'm asking this because this actually pretty hard to look up unless I'm just an idiot.

It's hard to know without fully knowing Advertising budgets and well hype from who... people, movie studios... both? some massive bombs that had hype I can think of off the top of my head are. Trank's Fantastic 4 Justice League lost money from what I remember too something like 50-100 million dollars. Dark Phoenix Ghostbusters 2016, The Mummy (Tom Cruise) Terminator: Dark Fate CATS I thought Amazing Spider-man 2 bombed but it apparently barely made a profit... but they were expecting it to be a billion dollar picture... so they budgeted it as such and it didn't come close... edit: Oh doolittle! Robert Downey Jr.'s first big movie post Iron Man... tons of celebrity talent doing voice overs... big cg budget... and an absolute abysmal failure on all fronts. edit2 : Wikipedia has a list of the biggest box office bombs in history... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_biggest_box-office_bombs

Heaven's Gate (1980) was a 4 hour $40 million dollar epic that most of the cast and crew thought was going to be the next Gone With The Wind. It made less then 10% of it's budget, bankrupted United Artists and killed the career of director Michael Cimino.
It's earned a cult following in recent years (personally I love it) but it's considered one of the industry's biggest flops.

(the movie used something like 1.5 million feet of film) Cimino demanded like 50 takes of each scene... it took so long to make... John Hurt who is in the movie left the project... went and shot Elephant Man... AND THEN CAME BACK TO THE PROJECT

I'd probably say the Lone Ranger movie takes it. The director and writers of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy reuniting with Johnny Depp while he was still considered a huge draw, with the power of Disney's marketing throwing its full weight behind it; it ends up losing up to $200 million and is the point where Depp's career entered the nosedive that he hasn't been able to pull out of yet.

I'd go with Justice League.
I know the DCEU was on shaky ground before it came out, but I don't think anybody expected DC's hugely built-up team-up movie to actually lose money and get owned so badly by Thor 3 and Coco.

probably either Cut-Throat Island or Battlefield Earth. I remember how big the hype was for both of them.

For example, Papa John's advertised for it, as did Hostess when they put out those Twinkies with the green filling. Hell, Hi-C even put out Ecto Cooler for a bit. Let's not forget that Progressive commercial. So yes, while there was a lot of backlash for it, there was some hype for it.

My Mom told me back then there was alot of hype around the Sgt. Pepper film, The Bee Gees were white hot at the time, and Peter Frampton was also white hot too, and the Beatles music was equally as hot a property, her and her friends thought it would be like the Sgt. Pepper On The Road musical they saw in NY, so the film comes out, and by the time it got to Maxwell Silver Hammer the hype died a quick death.

I remember there being a ton if advertising for "Cutthroat Island" and the interest was just not there... I'm not saying it was bad but it didn't live up to the hype, nor the budget.

There was also people that were super supporters of it that both arose from genuine interest and backlash to the backlash and you couldn't go anywhere on the internet without both sides of them clashing about how it was going to be the best/worst thing. and yeah there was also ads for it everywhere... they had an ad during the NBA Finals with like Lebron James and other NBA All Stars ... the advertising bonus for it was insane

John Carter and Lone Ranger are way up there for me. Those movies are actually kind of painful to even watch.

A lot of the movies mentioned lost more money, but I think Justice League has to take the title. It got the full blockbuster treatment. Advertising, soft drink cans, fast food tie in, toys, games, everything.
Lone Ranger and John Carter come close but with the onslaught of Justice League everywhere I have to give it to them.

Treasure Planet - Disney + Treasure Island + space = $$$$.....NOT!!! the fun fact of "Wild, Wild West" was that is what WB killed off the Nic Cage Superman film to make. The budget to make that film went into the budget for Wild Wild West instead, this was around the time the studio had a fair share of flops under its belt so they figured a Superman film will sink the studio, so that got the axe and they gave the money from that to Wild Wild West thinking that film would turn the studio around.
