I had a hard time coming up with a title for this, but here it goes. It's funny how some people are unaware of stuff when it comes to movies being based on stuff, or some people not being aware that something was already a remake. For example, I remember a shit-storm that the internet went through when there was talk of a Scarface remake, when in reality, the 1983 film was already a remake in its own right. Side note, I have actually watched the 1932 version.
One thing that cracked me up so much was when the 2018 Tomb Raider was coming out, some lady on Facebook called this movie out for "being a remake" and how "Angelina Jolie was Lara Croft" and all that stuff. I had to tell this woman that that particular version was more in connection with the 2010s Tomb Raider games and that Tomb Raider was based on a video game. She then replied to me saying that she didn't even know that Tomb Raider was based on a video game, because, and I quote, she doesn't play video games. I know a lot of people aren't gamers, but really? Come on, even the 2000s Tomb Raider films had it be known that they were based on the video games. How could someone not know that? Yes, there are some people who unaware, but I can't imagine going to a movie like that and not knowing of its source material.
There are also moments when people watch a show or a movie and think a particular actor is a certain person. I remember when I watched The Sandlot at around New Years, my mom thought that Squints was played by the guy who played Miranda's husband on Sex and the City. Of course, my sister and I had to correct her because the guy who played Squints was nowhere old enough for the time gap between that movie and that show.
Then again I have seen some people being surprised that certain movies were based on comics that weren't Marvel or DC.
What are some of your examples?

"Paul McCartney was in another group before Wings?" Are there people who didn't know that Paul McCartney was one of The Beatles? I really wonder that. I remember my aunt thinking that Bryan Adams was a part of Chicago, when she couldn't have been more wrong.

Summer of 2016, I was on a special assignment away from my home store. The team I was working with was primarily 18-22 year olds. One day, during break, they were very surprised to learn:
Christian Bale is British
Neil Patrick Harris is gay
Fairy tales such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were much, much gorier in their original versions than the Disney ones

I remember my aunt thinking that Bryan Adams was a part of Chicago, when she couldn't have been more wrong. I believe it. Remember, people thought that Kanye 'discovered' McCartney when they worked together in 2015. Also, I know people who didn't know that Dave Grohl was the drummer in Nirvana.

my dad does this a lot, and its made worse by his (mistaken) belief that if something is popular with him, its popular with everyone. for example, his all time favorite miniseries is "Band of Brothers" and one of his favorite shows is "Blue Bloods", both of which star Donnie Wahlberg. now while the rest of the world views Mark Wahlberg as a star and Donnie Wahlberg as "Mark Wahlberg's brother", my dad thinks Donnie is the bigger star of the two and every time Mark (whose name he can't remember and every time he sees him he always asks "Is that a Wahlberg?") is in a movie, its always the producers doing a favor for Donnie.
how this relates to him getting shit wrong with movies and tv is every time he sees anything that has even a debatable passing resemblance to something in a movie/show he likes, its always a "ripoff" of said movie/show. going back to "Blue Bloods" for an example, in every episode there is a minimum of at least one scene (usually more) where the whole family gets together for Sunday dinner. people have been sitting down to big family dinners for forever, and likewise they have been in movies and tv shows for forever, but it is a signature staple of "Blue Bloods". enter "Sons of Anarchy", which featured an episode in the first season where the Sons all sit down for a big family dinner. upon seeing it, my dad not only deemed it a ripoff, but said it was in fact the show taking a pot shot at the ratings giant that is "Blue Bloods". after all, Sons is about a gang of criminals, so what better way to piggyback off the success of others than by having the crooks all sit down to dinner a la "Blue Bloods". there was just one tiny flaw in his argument: the "Sons of Anarchy" episode aired two years before the first episode of "Blue Bloods".

Apparently there is going to be a remake of Three Men and a Baby starring Zac Efron (I believe) and so multiple comments of people moaning that there is no original ideas, not realizing that Three Men a Baby is itself a remake of a French movie

I don't know what is so hard to grasp about this. My mom is a big movie person, and she had no idea Resident Evil was a video game even though she's seen all the movies. People don't know everything about everything, especially if it wasn't targeted at their generation.

Seen some so-called 'knowledgeable' Doctor Who fans on Youtube react awkwardly to the design of the vintage Emperor Dalek lately (they're using it for their Time Lord Victorious media event)...not a lot of them appear to realise it's based off the TV Century 21 comics of the 60s. I wasn't even BORN in the 60s and even I know this!

I remember watching Batman Begins, probably when it was new on DVD, and at the end when the Joker card is shown, my dad was like "Oh, and that's how it continues with the Michael Keaton movie, right?" And I have no reason to think that he had even watched the 1989 Batman within the past ten years or so by then.

Well here's this out of the way:
"Wrestling is fake."
Oh no, those dead people are definitely dead, and those broken limbs that broke right on TV are very broken, and the concussion thing is totally true especially in that one case where a guy killed his wife and child and then himself.
".........well obviously not that stuff. But everything else is fake."
..........yeah, pretty much.

But I'd also like to cite an example of polar opposite stellar comprehension: my dad took me to see the Super Mario Brothers movie (with Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper) when it came out. Years later (10-15 I'd say), he mentions it very out of the blue in response to something. Of all the things I've done with my dad, he somehow remembered that - even name dropping it, which was almost more odd since he's not a video game or pop culture guy.
A few years after that, my mom mentions it to me. By name. My mom - knows NOTHING about video games, NOTHING about 95% of the movies I've ever seen........ but apparently must have remembered my dad I guess REALLY complaining about that movie 25 years ago, and knew enough to mention it back to me years later as a snarky reply to something.

My aunt was legit shocked that Dennis Wilson wasnt on drums on Pet Sounds. "But the cover has the beach boys! Why arent they playing their instruments??" She had no idea about the wrecking crew. I find theres still a big percentage of people who have no idea what session players are.

Without realizing that they were books beforehand, and ones that MGM and Disney watered down for family audiences at that. Same thing with any TMNT adaption that came after the 1987 cartoon. You do realize that the real original TMNT was a dark, underground comic book.

"Paul McCartney was in another group before Wings?" There are people today that have no clue who The Beatles are. There are "hip-hop heads" today that have no idea who 2Pac and Biggie are.

Christian Bale is British Not with him, but I was guilty of this with Hugh Laurie when House came out. I wasn't really familiar with him pre-House and was absolutely floored when I heard an interview with him. Being a fan of Friends, I felt really dumb realizing he had a cameo in that with his British accent.

More of an interesting fact, but one of the greatest comedies of all time, Airplane!, is practically a remake-parody of an older, much more serious film called Zero Hour.

To me some people just don’t care to research any form of media before or after interacting with it.

People who think the 50s was just Marilyn, Elvis, and Lucy. The 60s just the Beatles and the Stones.
And unfortunately, this includes people who run so-called "oldies" stations and the like, or create retro products.

19 year old nephew thought The Lord of the Rings were movies first and books second. I remedied that issue.

Honestly the tendency to think that all further adaptations of a well known work are remakes of earlier ones seems depressingly common.
I don't really like Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but whatever one's opinion, its not a bad "remake" of the 1971 film. You can say its a lousy version of the book or lesser than the Gene Wilder film by all means; just that by its very nature it is no more a remake of the latter movie than Red Dragon is of the film Manhunter.
