Another pop culture one: remember when Cannon Films had the rights to produce a Spider-Man film? Menahem Golan had no idea who Spider-Man was, and wrote a script where Peter Parker turns into a mutant spider-thing at night like a werewolf after being attacked by a crazy scientist.
Edit: and another one... Vince McMahon didn't know pirates were popular because of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and nixed the very popular Paul Burchill pirate run.

I've met quite a few people who gave up on the whole Star Wars thing after Empire and were shocked when I told them that Luke and Leia turned out to be twin siblings.

Fairy tales such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were much, much gorier in their original versions than the Disney ones I have a friend who's an avid movie goer and a rather highbrow/knowledgeable kind of guy about it. He posted a "meme" about the most unrealistic thing in Disney's Hercules is that Zeus was a good family man. And I just told him "That and little mermaid not dieing at the end of the movie" and he asked me what about that was unrealistic, thus me having to tell him it was based off a H.C. Anderson tale and about the ending (and how the mermaid had no name) and then how much of Disney's animation movies are based of books and stories, especially in the rennaisance period.

I dated a girl who for some reason thought Prince (Rogers Nelson) was also the lead singer of Queen.
If THAT was the case he would unquestionably be THE GOAT when it comes to rock music

Remember when Tamron Hall asked a Korean filmmaker who made a Korean film about Korean class structure for the Korean film market why they made the film in Korean?

Fans of the 2000's Teen Titans cartoon constantly whining about Teen Titans Go and the live action Titans. "Ruining my childhood", etc. These goofs do this while being oblivious to the fact that their show was itself a watered down version of a comic book series from the 80's.
Ditto for TMNT. If you hate any other version other than the 1988 cartoon that's fine, but that is not the original Turtles so stop crying when new versions don't have stupid belt buckles and yellow jumpsuit April.

More of an interesting fact, but one of the greatest comedies of all time, Airplane!, is practically a remake-parody of an older, much more serious film called Zero Hour. They actually bought the rights to Zero Hour so they wouldn't have to worry about being sued.

If I smacked them in the face with my dick, people wouldn't be as shocked and horrified I have not seen and no desire to ever see The Dark Knight Rises. The Health Ledger one. Do not care. At all. At all.

OK, my bad, I didn't hear that. Checking the Wiki page for Burchill does show that Vince wanted Burchill to believe he was a real pirate and not just honoring his ancestors, did that come up?

People who think anything superhero or animated is for kids. Years ago when I saw Ted, an idiot father had three kids aged 3 - 8 with him. Remember reading about parents bringing their kids to Deadpool too.
DO YOU NOT SEE THE RATINGS LOGO!?!?

I remember watching Batman Begins, probably when it was new on DVD, and at the end when the Joker card is shown, my dad was like "Oh, and that's how it continues with the Michael Keaton movie, right?" And I have no reason to think that he had even watched the 1989 Batman within the past ten years or so by then. Now that you mention it, I remembered that my dad thought that 2006's Casino Royale was supposedly a remake, whether it was of the 1967 spoof or even that 1954 film that was shown on TV. Though the later is mostly forgotten, but still. Some have even thought that The Dark Knight was a remake of Batman 1989.

DO YOU NOT SEE THE RATINGS LOGO!?!? when I worked at Blockbuster, at least half a dozen parents came back to the store 30 minutes later to return their copy of "Pan's Labyrinth". They saw some clips of fantasy stuff in the trailer and assumed it was for kids, completely ignoring that it was rated R and subtitled.

Does this count? The actual origins of 2 polarizing Sonic characters are the exact opposite of what fans think they are. Hell they've even swapped fur colors. Amy was brown in the manga while Sally was pink in early comics. PS. Charmy the Bee also originated from that manga too.

Honestly the tendency to think that all further adaptations of a well known work are remakes of earlier ones seems depressingly common. I don't really like Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but whatever one's opinion, its not a bad "remake" of the 1971 film. You can say its a lousy version of the book or lesser than the Gene Wilder film by all means; Eh... Burton's film did reference stuff that was from the movie from what I remember so it's kinda both.

I've seen far to many pictures of Anime videos with "Look kids cartoons" on them... when it was clear from the cover it was most assuredly not for kids.

Remember reading complaints about “Shin Godzilla”.. that said the movie was too serious, too much like a disaster movie being a metaphor to a recent disaster and the governments reaction to it. ..
I thought that’s funny cause the original “Gojira” released in Japan in 1954 was a serious disaster film that was a metaphor to recent events.

In 2002 or 2003 was at Hollywood renting a movie. Saw a VHS copy of LA Blue Girl for sale in the kids cartoon bin. Buddy bought it and had the clerk look up it's rental history. The tape was in the store for 2 years and was racked with the kids cartoons. Thankfully it was only rented a few times.
