In Mushroomhead, Skinny pretty much calls all the shots and is the driving force of the band.
Lars Ulrich has a 50/50 leadership with James in Metallica, but he is the face you see the most when interviews are done.
Other examples?

Proscriptor McGovern is the drummer, and singer, and primary creative force behind Absu.
Francis Mark also wrote a lot of the lyrics and was the co-vocalist in From Autumn To Ashes, then continued to record the drum tracks even after becoming the frontman.

Proscriptor McGovern is the drummer, and singer, and primary creative force behind Absu. Well he was at one point. Look into it, it's not pretty It's pretty common in extreme metal though. Fenriz from Darkthrone is an obvious one. Gene Hoglan was the main driving force in Dark Angel from the minute he joined. Ricky Meyer basically IS Disgorge. Franscesco Paoli has recently switched back to guitar/lead vocals but for a long time he was Fleshgod Apocalypse' drummer.

While Amanda Palmer is the better known name from The Dresden Dolls, the band is just her and Brian Viglione in concert, with her on keyboard and him on drums (and occasionally guitar) and he's given just as much focus.

Genesis is the first thing that comes to mind. Tony Banks is the main force behind Genesis. If you ever see Genesis : Together and Apart, they mention his dominance. Which surprised me as he always seemed like the quiet one who just went with the flow.

I’ve always considered Don Henley to be the main guy of the Eagles. Even before Glenn Frey died.

Not to be morbid but I think it's safe to say Alex is the leader of the band now should they choose to continue in some capacity.

Genesis is the first thing that comes to mind. I was just about to say that. After all Genesis does what Nintendo don't.

More metal guys (most of whom are also the lead or co-lead vocalist):
King Fowley from Deceased Chris Reifert from Autopsy Nicke Andersson when he was in Entombed (aka the only good ones) John Haughm from Agalloch (first 2 albums only, though, and he always played rhythm guitars live from the beginning) Dave Gold from Woods of Ypres (mostly just the early albums though he did play drums on their last album as well) Flo Mournier from Cryptopsy Steve Asheim from Deicide (Glen Benton is the front man but Steve was always the main songwriter) James Read from Revenge Mike Browning from Nocturnus Hellhammer from Mayhem (mostly on account of being the only original member who is neither dead nor imprisoned) Jami Morgan from Code Orange (though he no longer plays drums live)

This is actually the case for me in 2 of my own bands.
I am also the musical director for another project I play drums for, but I don't compose the material (it's all covers).

Levon Helm in The Band is one for me, most of the hits were sung by him too.

Dave Grohl originally was the only member of Foo Fighters and recorded on multiple instruments including drums. So I guess that counts.

Genesis is the first thing that comes to mind. Is that because it does what Nintendon't?
