I just want to be able to tech out of taunts like you can in No Mercy. I'm not aware of this working in a non-AKI game.

I imagine the reason Kenny kept mentioning "No Mercy" is because that's the most recognizable name for wrestling fans and wrestling game fans. And there's a certain unfair bias among some of them when they hear "Def Jam." Which is a damn shame since Vendetta and especially Fight For New York were fantastic games. And Hideyuki Iwashita also worked on Vendetta and FFNY.
Also anyone complaining about the graphics at this point doesn't know a whole lot about game development. This is an extremely early proof-of-concept build, and I doubt the final game will look like that. There were no lighting effects added or really anything resembling post-processing. Even art direction can change this early into things. Like, it's not even in alpha yet.
If this game was a couple of months out and it looked like that? Yeah, I'd be worried. But it's a long ways off.

I know AEW's covered some of the basics for their games like a standard wrestling console game, GM mobile game, and a casino game for some reason. But I also wonder if AEW Games is going to be its own actual, independent publisher or just a brand label that will co-publish with larger companies. My guess is the latter, though if it's the former, it opens up a lot of opportunities for AEW-themed games that one normally wouldn't think of when considering wrestling games. WWE tried this back in the day with uh, mixed results, and that's being kind. But if gamers like Kenny and Cody are overseeing things, we could see games with genuine effort put into them.
Here are some of my suggestions: some serious, some not-so-serious, and some that will probably get cease and desist lawsuits.
AEW vs Capcom - A 2.5D Fighting Game from Capcom that features the stars of AEW fighting against the likes of Ryu, Chun-Li, and Phoenix Wright.
Hangman Redemption - An open world game set in the historical era of the late 2010's that tells the story of Hangman Adam Page, his tragic downfall, and his triumphant redemption. You will have the chance to explore the streets of Las Vegas, Chicago, and Jacksonville.
Omega ga Gotoku: Like An Omega. Kenny Omega and Hikaru Shida star in this RPG/Open World/Beat 'Em Up hybrid where they have to face off against rival wrestlers and crooked promoters in the streets of Tokyo. Explore the areas of Shibuya, Akihabara, Shinjuku, and Bunkyo, home of the world famous Tokyo Dome City.
The Legend of Brandi: Cody's Adventure. Cody and his trusty wolf Pharaoh adventure in the realm of Hyrhodes in this adventure game. He must rescue the Princess Brandi and the land from the nefarious plans of the Dark Order and their leader, Brodiedorf. Along the way, he must re-assemble the mystical artifact known as the TNT Belt.

I'd unironically buy that game and all it's DLC lol

Honestly, I kinda want that crappy 8-bit "game" to be an unlockable Easter egg in the console game.

I know people keep harping on the whole "No Mercy" thing, but I'm hoping this is code for "we're using an updated Day of Reckoning engine".

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urii5y_zTyE&ab_channel=F4WOnlineInteresting comments from Kenny about the game. Acknowledges that a pure No Mercy style system isn't what they are going for, citing people like Rey Fenix whose moveset is so unique and fluid. Seems like it'll be using it as a base and then tweaking it for today's environment.

I’m curious about how Orange Cassidy’s style of wrestling will work within this game. He can’t just wrestle like everyone else. He has his own unique style.

I'm holding out for Persona: All Elite.
"All Elite Wrestling seems like a normal wrestling company, however incidents of brutality have veen occuring with more frequency in the ring. Two friends, Sammy and Marko, are transported to the Kayfabe World when training in the ring late one night. There they discover the truth, the characters the wrestlers play on TV are overwriting their real personalities. Luckily they find a small dinosaur person familiar with the Kayfabe World that can help them defeat the threat, by harnessing Personas. "

Yeah, I had a feeling the No Mercy comments were just to draw in hardcore wrestling game fans as opposed to this playing exactly like a 20+ year old game with modern graphics. I'd look more to Day of Reckoning or the first two Def Jam games to get an idea of what they're likely aiming for. Yuke's developing and Iwashita directing means you've got some of the best folks in the business making this game. And unlike with WWE 2K, I think AEW and whoever they're publishing with will give them a lot of time to develop the game they want without being beholden to a soul-crushing yearly developmental cycle.

Yeah, I think the ideal cycle for AEW would be every second year for a new release with a major DLC update on the off years.

There should be more interactive backstage environments and objects because I didn't think there were enough of those in the 2K WWE games. Back in the THQ/Yukes era, I was able to jump off helicopters, use hubcap frisbees, throw a basketball at an opponent, shove their face in food, and plenty of other things.

One thing that lacks greatly in wrestling games is each character feeling unique.
If they could pull it off, great but I doubt it. Kinda hard to have CAWs in the game and making all the base wrestlers feel unique

I’d enjoy something similar to the def jam games as well (not that flaming piece of garbage that was icon)
