Not the final season, but I'm still wondering why they took that detour with the corrupt union in Season 2. The docks storyline did show how futile the war on drugs was with the introduction of The Greek's organization; no matter how many dealers the cops busted, the criminals bringing the drugs in and supplying them to the corners was far beyond their ability to take down. It was also the first look into how the rot that infected an institution affected the city as a whole, which would then expand to politics and education in seasons 3 and 4. The newspaper story was just a self-contained critique on that industry that let Simon air his old grudges, it never really tied into the whole picture. In interviews, Simon explained that a lot of his cast didn't like the change either. He was emphatic that he wanted to show a full, three dimensional view of the drug problem, and not just focus on the street corner. Simon said he felt it was a disservice, not showing how and where the drugs came in to the country, how the drugs don't just exist in a vacuum in minority and poor communities.

The last season of How I Met Your Mother took place during a single event in the story (the weekend of Barney and Robin's wedding). It seriously felt like it was a 22-part episode, concluded by the worst 2-part series finale of all time. Came in here to say this. The last season had several episodes that were absolutely pointless. It could have been a half season and it would have been just fine.

Law & Order, the original was and SVU will be (whenever it comes to an end) weird because they are not even the same show they once were. I like SVU better now because of the actors (not Mariska who is an awful leading lady) but both are not even the same show they were when the debuted. The original, even with two actors left from early seasons and SVU are so far from what they started as it's incredible. At some point the creator really needed to just make it a spin off rather than a continuation of the original because there is no way it's even the same shows.

Dexter's last season was horrifically bad. And the ending was bizarre as hell.

I had actually blocked Season 4 of The Good Place out of my mind. They spent FOREVER with that dumb experiment to prove their system would work, then just threw up their hands and said "Happy ending!!!" I was a huge fan of that show but that last season more or less soured me on the whole thing. It seemed they were just coasting on viewers being so charmed by the actors that they could just sort of coast through the ending.
This pitfall was very narrowly averted by Broad City. Season 4 was mostly "We can do whatever we want, just as long as we yell YASSS QUEEN every two minutes" and really suffered storywise. Fortunately, they managed to recover in time to have a really strong final season.

I've never seen it, and it's technically a spin-off, but after The Golden Girls ended there was a single season series called Golden Palace, where Sophia, Rose, and Blanche run a hotel together. I know you said you hadn’t seen it but do you know where Dorothy was?

Or two? There’s scrubs season 9 That 70s show season 8 Roseanne season 10 Drew Carey show season 9 Community season 5 and 6 were weird but I liked them. I don’t skip them like I would the others I don’t mean jumped the shark because the magic was gone, I mean they drastically changed the formula for some reason. I include the I love Lucy in the countryside in this as well. Not exactly weird and a natural progression of their lives, but man I can’t get into this season and it’s just so different in that big house. “Building a BBQ” is a highlight of that season of I Love Lucy.

I am surprised no one mentioned the final season of Newhart. Not only the final episode, but watch that final season, it had a lot of weird episodes.

I know you said you hadn’t seen it but do you know where Dorothy was? Dorothy married Leslie Neilson in the final episode of GG Dorothy did make a guest appearance in a two part episode half way through the show's only season. The episode(s) revolved around Dorothy trying to get Sophia to move to Atlanta with her because she felt Sophia was too old to be working in such a stressful job.
