I have seen pretty much this whole movie in bits and pieces, and it's fantastic. You just made me realize that I've never actually sat through it and just watched it start to finish though. I may have to remedy that today in honor of the anniversary.
Also, love the Queen theme, and marked the f*** out when they used it on The Flash.

Oh man I love this movie so much. When it was coming out my mother and i were helping her sister and husband move to Brownsville TX. We had stopped somewhere in TX for the night. Went out ot eat and for some reason I vomited all over the table.
To make me feel better my fave Uncle the next night took me out to see Flash Gordon. Then to a near by Kmart where he bought me 4 Star Wars figures.

I have seen pretty much this whole movie in bits and pieces, and it's fantastic. I had this exact same thing with Raiders of the Lost Ark. I’d seen it in bits but never from start to end until about fifteen years ago.

Arrow Video put out a 40th anniversary DVD/Blu-Ray/4k restoration within the last couple months, and it's literally the only version of this movie you should own on home video. For over 20 years I'd heard legend of a UK-exclusive Brian Blessed commentary of this movie, and this weekend I finally listened to it - because these beautiful bastards included it on this release - and it was worth the wait. You forget he can speak eloquently and calmly...

Flash Gordon is, even for the time, a bad movie. And that’s why I love it so much.
Like, it knows exactly what it is and the budget it has and runs with it in a way you can’t really do anymore for a variety of reasons. It’s why I loved Jupiter Ascending so much, it knew what it was and the budget it had and ran with it even if it’s not exactly going to be up there with The Matrix or Cloud Atlas in Iconic Wachowski Sister works.
It’s honestly why I don’t want a remake. Not because it’ll be bad but because someone will try to make it good and I cannot have that.
Happy Anniversary, Flash!

Did you ever see the 1-season SyFy series (gosh, 12 now? oof.) years back? It looks like they were so desperately trying not to do the '80 movie - even though they had Sam Jones for an episode - and it was beyond dreadful. There was something there, with a rather screwy sciency premise of getting back & forth to Mongo IIRC, that had promise, but once you were on Mongo it was so dull.

I have no idea there was anything like that because that feels like something I’d remember for some odd reason. Was it like NBC’s attempt at a Dark and Gritty Monsters reboot?

Hrm, unaware of this NBC thing you speak of. You mean like GRIMM? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Gordon_(2007_TV_series)For sci-fi, it was not fun and a mess, they had to be trying not to channel the movie at all, and even though I know the source material fairly ok it still seemed cheap and uninspired in comparison. Eric Johnson, who played Whitney early on in Smallville, was Flash..... other cable TV movie (Lifetime, Hallmark) alums like Gina Holden, Anna Van Hooft and Steve Bacic played Dale, Aura and Barin respectively. Zarkov was like a guy in his 30s. A guy from Supernatural played Vultan. And (of course) Ming was just some white dude with hair and no Fu Manchu looks whatsoever. Until a few years ago, I used to see that DVD set at my local Target. Kinda/sorta wish I'd snatched it up (it was like $5 the last time I saw it), for the hell of it.

I think they hyped it as a big deal and I remember seeing nothing much of it outside of trailers.

Oh my dear frigging God what was that......... Was just reminded that they got an alt rock band to do a (pretty good) cover of the Queen Flash song, which only ran during commercials for the show before episode 1. Main theme song was just some thing. They used the Queen song to hype it! And then gave us......a cheapish SyFy show. ......somehow that Mockingbird Lane show looked more impressive (budget wise) yet looked even worse than SyFy's Flash Gordon. I'm flustered by all of this.
