I'm always surprised when people are like "The show was terrible after Season 6". There are some really great episodes in season 9. Yes, it's getting broader and sillier compared to its heyday but it's still leagues funnier than most comedies.

By season 2 or 3 people thought the show had gone downhill.

I always liked The Principal and the Pauper...
I was confused when I found out everyone hated it.
Simpson’s were starting to get formulamatic and started leaning into celebrity cameos.
I enjoyed how different that episode was and how it might have been little more mean-spirited.

I still belly laugh at both the car ride and the “Copy of Swank” back and forth between Homer and Skinner.

I mean, I feel the show was pretty good until season 11, when they did a "Behind the Music" parody, Behind the Laughter.

The metaphor I was thinking of when I was looking at the episode list and tallying up the good ones and the clunkers was the show had been driving down the highway for the glory years. Season 9 was when they turned on the turn signal. Season 10 and 11 is when they got on the off-ramp, Season 12 was when they were off the road.

Skinner starts off as a street punk until the Sergeant takes him under his wing. When he's presumed dead Skinner makes it his mission to turn his life around, he repairs the relationship with his mother and takes a career in education in his honour. When the Sergeant returns (possibly a POW) the townspeople accept him as a "real" war hero, leaving Skinner ostracised and causing him to leave for Capital City. You don't change the episode too much, but you also keep the integrity of the Skinner character.

Season nine is good but you'll see the bad habits of the following Scilly years taking hold.
When Al Jean takes over in season 13 everyone kinda stops giving a shit

“Simpson Tide” has some really funny gags like the Return of Communism bit and Homer accidentally firing the Navy Captain stuck in the torpedo.

Season 9, when the rot set in, 'the rot' being Mike Scully, who rode the show to death for four years and then passed it to Al Jean so that he could pretend it was still relevant, like new studio albums by the Rolling Stones.
