16. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
I spent most of the movie wondering why I wasn’t enjoying it more. It just felt sort of lifeless. Professor Xavier was sort of a jerk who appeared to like drinking straight whiskey. Everyone else just seemed to be going through the motions. While a good soundtrack can really boost a movie (see The Expendables a few entries up) but this one did nothing to build suspense or excitement. In a month I will probably forget that I ever watched this.

38. Wolfen* *DVD* I bought this as part of my mission to own every movie that brutal death metal band Mortician sampled. This was sampled on a song called “Wolfen” on their 1999 Chainsaw Dismemberment album. Sadly the movie wasn’t really up to snuff. The parts with the Wolf were really well done. I liked the POV camera of the Wolf and the sound effects too. But there really wasn’t enough Wolf action. But they did a really good job of going the Jaws route and not showing the Wolf until late in the movie. That’s much more effective. Some of the locations were really cool and the overall vibe of the movie was really good. And the gore (what little there was) was good. But the lead (played by Albert Finney) really got on my nerves after a while with all his snarky one-liners and his motions. I liked Gregory Hines’ character much more but he was a supporting character. I did find it pretty funny how both of them nonchalantly ate while in the morgues or investigating murder scenes. I’m glad enough I saw it. I don’t feel ripped off for paying $15 (Canadian) for it.

17. Mad Max
There is a good reason why I saved showing this to my boys as the last in the series. It’s because it isn’t really very good. And I mean that in a very Roger Corman sort of way. Low budget. Cheap sets. Mediocre acting. And yet, I still love it.

#49 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
*Blu-Ray
Quite a step down this time. It's still a fun adventure and Short Round is a great, enjoyable character who you care for. The Willie character is pretty one-note and unlikable, so this movie feels like it would've worked better without a love angle. [***]

37. Valentine (2001) - Streamed this somewhere. This movie sprang to mind recently and I don't even know why. I hadn't even given it any thought until that moment. With that being said, I found it somewhere to watch because I didn't want to rent it. Anyway, this came out at a time when there was that big slasher movie craze that started with Scream just four years prior (I know people will argue the math in years, but Scream came out in December of 1996, and this came out in February of 2001; so it wasn't a full five years). What I can say is that...I really don't think that this movie is as bad as people say it is. The performances were decent, especially with Denise Richards making me want to see her get hers (her character was a terrible person), and David Boreanaz actually didn't do so bad given what he had to work with, though that bit towards the end was a bit odd. I wouldn't call it a good movie, because there were some bits that showed some bad writing, or maybe had some sequences that may have been left out.
Maybe I had spoiled myself ahead of time, but even there were some bits that were a bit contrived and it didn't feel like there was a big mystery on who the killer is. I don't know. This was way before "woke" culture, but a lot of the movie painted guys in a negative light, but some of the women in the movie weren't much better, either. I just felt it was just, I don't know, there? Like I said, it wasn't a good movie, but I didn't hate it.

40. The Evil Dead 2 *bluray* I haven’t seen this movie in something like 42,000 years. I don’t like it as much as the first one since it turned the camp comedy up so high. The makeup and effects were still great but the first one legit scares the shit out of me. This one does not. But still a landmark/genre defining movie.

I can't help but have a ton of fun when I'm watching this. It has a bunch of cliches but features enjoyable performances as the cast has great chemistry. The songs are catchy and it's just a good time. [****]

38. Bounty Killer - Watched this on Blu Ray. I watched this movie a while back on Netflix and I enjoyed it enough to buy it on Blu Ray, but hadn't gotten around to watching it again. Since I had been playing, and then beat the Mad Max game (for PS4 and Xbox One), I not only have an itch to watch the Mad Max movies (which I will do soon), but also this movie. Anyway, when it comes to modern sendups of cheesy "grindhouse" type of movies (like from the late-2000s to early-2010s), a lot of the time they are hit and miss. The one movie that was of that caliber that I wasn't a fan of was Bitch Slap, but this movie, surprisingly enough, was actually a hit (in a "hit and miss" situation, I mean). This was a fun flick where it combined elements of Mad Max and Kill Bill, as well as not taking itself seriously and also not going overboard with the whole "we're making a bad movie." Yes, it's campy, but it's fun, it's also funny because there is some humor, and to top it off, some of the action scenes were fun. They even used practical effects for some sequences (well, except for the explosions). adamclark52, not sure if you've seen this, but this might be right up your alley.

41. 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams* *DVD* Even though this was essentially the same as the first movie (even a lot of the same cast)...it f***ing sucked. Lots of boobs but I can see those anywhere. The violence was tame as shit. Most of it happens off screen and is reduced to blood splatter. And the sound editing is so f***ing terrible. I’d say that’s the worst offender but that’s ignoring the plot and writing. Hucklebilly from the first movie returns and he’s kinda funny. And it had Ahmed Best, who sings hillbilly music and sounds like Jar Jar when he does it. That was f***ing hilarious and makes the movie actually worth watching.

39. The Last Boy Scout - Watched this on DVD. For about a month, I have had an itch to watch this, and today I pulled the trigger. It had been quite a long time since I last watched this. I have always enjoyed this movie. Yes, Bruce Willis played a guy who is hard to root for, as he is a rather flawed human being. Damon Wayans was also pretty likable in the movie in some areas. It's kind of intriguing to hear that this movie was a troubled production, whether it's drama involving Joel Silver (the producer), Shane Black (the writer), Tony Scott (the director), and Bruce Willis (the star), as well as not doing so well when it came out, this movie is definitely well-regarded by movie fans. I heard that Shane Black's original script was MUCH darker (almost like how he had another script for Lethal Weapon 2 that was even darker than the final product). Maybe I should find it. But overall, this movie is definitely a good mix of action and mystery.

42. The Children (2009)* *DVD* I like children (I even have a couple of my own) but this movie will make you want to see children die. They just run around. Scream. Cough on everything. Kill their parents. Vomit. I mean yeah they’re infected by an unknown parasite that turns them into psychopathic monsters. But they’re pretty f***ing annoying in this movie. Some of the parents were too thought. There weren’t to many people I didn’t want to see die in this one. I was worried this one would be too scary for my liking and while it tetered right on the line it never crossed over. I was also worried because it was released by a pretty mainstream company that it would suck to much ass but it didn’t. The gore was pretty good. The music really set the mood right. If you like stuff like Village of the Damned and the Shining you should like this.

I liked this a lot more the second time around. It wasn't nearly as slow as I remembered, there's great music, and some strong performances. The plot isn't anything great or overly original but it does its job to help make this entertaining. I just couldn't get into the Mike/Brooke romance at all. [***]

There were a few good ideas in here but this feels messy. It's like it tried too hard to be odd and throw in too many characters. That makes it mostly waste some of its pretty talented cast. [**]

40. Very Bad Things (1998) - Watched this on DVD. For years I had been meaning to watch this, and I have had my chances but didn't go through with them. So today I finally saw it and what I could say is that though I've heard some conflicting viewpoints about this movie, I would say that this movie was really dark, maybe a little too dark. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate dark comedies, whether it's Heathers, Horrible Bosses, Pulp Fiction, etc. I even found some appreciation towards Assassination Nation (must see that one again), even though that was a little weird. But here, I can say that I found myself laughing in certain moments, especially during the bachelor party scenes, but then it goes a little off the rails after that. The performances were fine, especially with showing how unlikable the characters are (Christian Slater did well as a sociopath), but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be laughing during certain scenes.
I am not saying that I don't like this movie, but it would be wrong to say that I loved it, too. Maybe one day I might give it another watch and see if I might enjoy it more. Some say that this was a precursor to The Hangover, if it was much more brutal and dark (that's not even going into the sequels). I very much agree. I even hear that people are divisive about Rough Night, but I am curious about that one, too.

Once again, Denis Villeneuve delivers. This film took a slew of talented people (Gosling, Villeneuve, Ford, cinematographer Rodger Deakins, etc.) and gave them the platform to deliver a memorable show. It’s exactly what I want from a sci-fi film. A great story, masterful visuals, and a fantastical world. One of the best films of a crowded 2017. [****½]

43. Slave/Mountain of the Cannibal God* *DVD* I really should have been paying more attention to this movie (especially since I paid money for it) but I was really just in and out depending on the music. It had some good gore but the main violence and offensiveness was animal on animal violence. So you may as well watch nature documentaries. This just had some boobs added to the mix. Still kinda cool. I’ll probably come back and watch it again some other time and actually pay attention. Or I’ll watch Cannibal Holocaust again for the full Monty.
