#94 - Fight Club
*Blu-Ray
All these years later and this still holds up. It takes you on twists and turns and even when you know what's coming, it's still a wild ride. An absolute classic. [****½]

27. Tom and Jerry
You want a rehash of all the best classic Tom and Jerrybits but in a modern setting? The fight scenes are wonderfully chaotic and destructive and the interaction between the cartoons and the live actions are well done. On the downside, I hated every single song on the soundtrack. And do you remember how delightful and charming Michael Pena was in Ant Man? That is how annoying and unlikeable he is in this. It was okay.

84. Aftermath (2014)* *DVD* I bought this thinking it was another movie called Aftermath. Turns out what I was looking for was an early-1990’s Spanish gore flick, this was an early-2010’s mid-tire Netflix post apocalyptic thriller/horror movie. It honestly wasn’t too bad at all. It was basically “Fallout (the video game) - the movie”, mixed with Night of the Living Dead. I didn’t like that they included a younger kid who looked almost exactly like my oldest son. But that added to the depression of the story. It would have been cool if there were more mutants and shit running around but whatever.

29. Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned (1980) 30. Little Giants (1994)So for those not familiar, this is one of a glut of kid's underdog sports movies that came out in the 90's attempting to piggyback off the popularity of The Mighty Ducks. It starred Ed O'Neill as a small town football hero (who may or may not have scored four touchdowns in a single game, the movie is unclear on this) who's now coaching the local pee-wee football team and Rick Moranis as his dorky younger brother who winds up coaching a rival team of misfits and losers including his own daughter. I'm not sure what made me want to track this down. I think I was just feeling nostalgic for this kind of movie after watching Game Changers on Friday. I wanted to like it, and it had its moments, but it just wasn't very good. It was cliched as it could get and dragged on forever.

#95 - Only God Forgives
*Hulu
A big disappointment. Considering I liked this actor/director combo in Drive, this was one I had hope for. Visually, it is pretty cool and features a few interesting scenes. It just lacks an interesting story or characters that I cared about. [**]

85. The Brood* *DVD* This was really cool but what interested me more than the story or the gory effects was Oliver Reeds performance. The guy commanded every scene he was in and owned every line of dialogue. Even if you don’t like horror movies or David Cronenburghs brand of weirdness watch it just to see that guy. It does start out and stay fairly normal for most of its runtime but then it just gets f***ed right up in its finale. And downright terrifying.

86. Doom Asylum* *Tubi* Another 1980’s horror-comedy but this one somehow lowered the bar even lower. It was on par with a Troma film in terms of the quality of acting and silliness of some of the writing (some of which was actually very clever) but not as goofy with the gore. It had Kristen Davis in her first film role and I’ve always found her extremely attractive. No difference here. And it had Patty Mullen (aka Frankenhooker) but she was nowhere near as hilarious in this one. Still an enjoyable way to spend an hour and fifteen minutes.

I've been doing a weekly challenge thing this year which has been a ton of fun hitting movies I haven't watched before letterboxd.com/heald/list/the-featured-presentation-2021-challenge/. Kinda slacked off with the last few weeks going insane but the last one i watched was The Meg which I was expecting to hate but it's Jason Staham fighting a shark what more can you ask for!?

#96 - The Hunger Games
*Blu-Ray
While it doesn't live up to the book, the movie works pretty well. There are pacing issues but the performances are strong and the plot is engaging. I do wish a different director helmed this though since the action scenes are weirdly shot.
Bonus points for Hughie from The Boys being in this! [***½]
#97 - Mortal Kombat
*Hoopla
The epitome of the "good bad movie." There's almost nothing about this that should work or that's good on its own. However, it comes together for a wildly cheesy movie that I can't help but love. Lame acting and weird pacing is overlooked because it has a ton of fun moments and an iconic theme song. [***]

#98 - Godzilla vs. Kong
*HBOMax
The best entry of the series. This gave me just what I wanted. Even with a few too many human characters, they were just there for exposition and to do a few things but the focus was on the monsters fighting. I got to see them beat the hell out of each other and it was fun. That's all I can ask for. Plus, it wasn't overly long! [****]

86. Night of the Creeps* *bluray* This jumped all over the place (part zombie movie, part alien parasite movie, part college comedy movie) but it all worked in the end. It also had a good 1950’s sci-fi vibe to it. Tom Atkins was in it and anything with him always gets my attention. The two lead males were really good too. I really bought a deep friendship between the two. The gore was great. The comedy was good. A real good slab of 1980’s horror that shouldn’t be passed on.

It is 100% what you'd expect. A revenge thriller that doesn't do anything different from other movies in the genre. That means it's fine to watch but not something you'd call overly good or that you'd watch multiple times. [**½]

I'm back and better than ever!
62. Godzilla (2014) - Watched this on HBO Max. Because I am going to the theater to watch Godzilla vs. Kong (yes, you read that right), I am in preparation mode. With that being said, on with the review. I saw this in theaters when it came out, which was seven years ago. I'll give the movie some credit in that they did a build-up for Godzilla to appear, even if it took a while. Though it's been said that it's a proper homage to the old films (which I shall finally check out), I think it was done right. Yes, it was a little slow, but it did tell a decent story before getting to the good stuff, even if that was in the second and last hour of the movie.
Now to do Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Kong: Skull Island. I may do the older films soon, too.

87. Rock ‘N’ Roll Nightmare/the Edge of Hell* *DVD* If you can make it through an hour of torturous sex scenes, bad acting and awesome music you’ll be treated to maybe the greatest battle of good verses evil ever set to film. The Avengers verses Thanos < Batman verses the Joker < Frodo verses the Ring < Darth Vader verses Luke Skywalker < Satan verses Jon-Mikl Thor

29. Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned (1980) 30. Little Giants (1994) 31. Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)I remember watching these Ewok movies as a kid back in the 80's. My Dad somehow piped the movies audio through our record player (I assume for stereo sound), something four year old me thought could only be done through Voodoo. I've been trying to get the DVD for these through Netflix for nearly two decades now, but they've constantly been unavailable, just sitting in the "Saved" section of my queue. But now it's on Disney+ and I can watch it whenever I want. Was it worth the wait? No, not in the slightest. This sucked. It was slow, boring and maudlin. The special effects were ok for an 80's TV movie, but the Ewoks costumes were just horrible. They were basically at Howard the Duck levels, where you never once look at them and think they're anything other than a guy in a costume. And the Burl Ives narration was disconcerting. It was like watching the world's weirdest nature documentary. Hopefully the sequel will be more interesting.

From a rom-com standpoint, this doesn't do anything new. However, I do like that the story revolves around the protagonist losing his hearing and I appreciate how there's a happy ending but it's not the generic one. A pretty cute flick that was enjoyable. [***]

88. Godzilla vs. Kong* *Playstation Network* I really had hoped to see this in theatres but I don’t think that’s happening in Ontario anytime soon. It was actually really good. The CGI was kinda bad in parts but never enough to the point where it bothered me. The fights were great. But above all the human characters (while still horrible) were far better than those in Godzilla: King of Monsters. The one returning character was annoying as hell but the only other returning character was barely in it. The rest were just there. It’s too bad this will likely be the last movie in the franchise. It ends in a way that it didn’t look like they (Godzilla and King Kong) would continue battling. But even stand alone movies aren’t likely since it won’t make any of the money it could have. And the production companies contract with Toho expired last year and from what I’ve read I can tell they’re not going to bother anymore.
