168. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales* *Disney+* While this was nowhere near as offensive to the senses as the third movie this one was basically background noise. There was a dashing young guy in it who wasn’t Orlando Bloom. There was a pretty girl who wasn’t Keira Knightly. And there was a creepy ghostly guy and his crew on a haunted ship who wasn’t Captain Balbossa and the Flying Dutchman. That’s all I got. I remember more of the preview I saw of this movie before Rogue One the five times I saw that movie four years ago then I do the actual movie that I’m watching right now. Jolly Ho!

76. The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)This showed up as a freebie on YouTube and I was curious. For those not familiar, this movie is infamous for filing a lawsuit against Clayton Moore, the beloved actor who played the Lone Ranger on the 50's TV show, to prevent him from appearing in public as the title character anymore, thus completely alienating any potential audience this movie could have had and making it one of the more noteworthy box office bombs in movie history. But it had other problems as well that led to its downfall. A painfully outdated feel for 1981, like a 50's Western with none of the 50's Western charm. The Merle Haggard ballad narration does nothing to help with this. Uninspired and uninteresting performances, notably by its two leads. A forgettable, paint by numbers plot. Why did it even bother with a love interest if she's going to have no bearing on the story whatsoever? The only parts that were remotely interesting were Christopher Lloyd as the villain and his interactions with Jason Robards President Ulysses S. Grant. Honestly the whole thing was just really really boring. 77. The Lone Ranger (2003)So while looking up some info on the 1981 movie, I discovered this, which I had no idea existed. This is a 2003 television movie made by the WB Network intended to serve as a pilot for a Lone Ranger series. It is exactly what you'd expect for a 2003 WB show - a lot of personal drama, actors that look way too attractive for the parts they're playing, and early-2000's pop music playing in the background throughout. It's just very weird to see that formula used for a western. So in this version The Lone Ranger, played by Chad Michael Murray, is renamed from John Reid to Luke Hartman for... reasons. Tonto is basically Jackie Chan. Tonto has a hot sister that serves as a love interest for Luke Hartman, but much like the 1981 movie, she really has very little impact on the plot (I'm assuming her role would be expanded upon if this went to series). The story is solid but unspectacular, but the pacing is just wonky. Some parts just feel like they're flying and you're missing something, only for everything to suddenly stop and move at a snail's pace. I'd say it's better then the 1981 movie, and even the 2013 movie, but those are incredibly low bars to clear. It's nothing all that special and really probably best it didn't get picked up.

64. The Hangover
My daughter is away for a few days so we will be watching movies for my 16 year old twin boys. First up is this raunchy, offensive, and hilarious movie. The boys loved it. The only things we had to explain to them was who Wayne Newton and Carrot Top were.

169. The Manson Family* *DVD* Unlike a lot of people I really have zero interest in Charles Manson and his actions. There’s like a million other things I’d rather spend my time on. I only really watched this because I like everything else I’ve seen from Jim VanBebber and I heard this was really violent and f***ed up. It was pretty schizophrenically edited it and that kept my interest. But too much of it was just building to the violence and getting to know the members of the family. And I’m doing so I really got an understanding of why people hated hippies so much. I never really cared for them before and I don’t know if I’d go as far to say I “hate” them now but watching their shenanigans for ninty-five minutes was more than enough for me for a while. It did get better around halfway in once things got darker. VanBebber has done some great work and it’s really too bad he hasn’t been able to do more.

76. The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)77. The Lone Ranger (2003) 78. Brewster's Millions (1945)So I, like I think most people nowadays, are probably most familiar with the 1985 version of this movie, with Richard Pryor and John Candy. But this version showed up on YouTube as a freebie and, once again, I was curious. For anybody else curious, this is far from the first version of the story put to film. In this version Brewster is a recently returning World War II soldier who needs to spend a million dollars to win $8 million. His situation is further complicated by the will stipulating he can't marry his long-time fiancée until the challenge is over and being unable to explain why. Weirdest thing about the whole movie is the guy and his girlfriend already live in a NYC brownstone and have, what I assume is, a butler (played by Jack Benny's Rochester), so I question how poor they are in the first place that they need the money. Otherwise it's an ok-enough old timey movie. If nothing else Rochester was funny with his non-sequitur one-liners. 79. Star Trek: First Contact (1996)Another freebie from YouTube. Still my favorite Star Trek movie. If nothing else it's easily the best Star Trek movie featuring the TNG crew.

#188 - Saw IV
*Blu-Ray
There are obvious issues, like the unlikable characters and some incoherent plot points, but I appreciated how this tried to expand on the lore with flashbacks and such. It is more gore for the sake of it but the twist is pretty surprising. [**]
#189 - F9: The Fast Saga
*Theater
I come to Fast & Furious to see dumb shit happen and have a good time. That's just what this did. There's not much in the way of story or acting but it's a blast with huge moments and many reasons to laugh and get hype. It's just what I wanted. John Cena is the GOAT. [****]

65. The Hangover Part II
Same setup as the first movie but this time they are in Thailand. Somehow they manage to crank up the raunchiness and absurdity even higher than the first one. Hilarious.
Do you know what happened to my finger? We gave it to a drug dealing monkey.

Legend of the Superheroes THE CHALLENGE-7 outta 10
The first part of the infamous Hanna Barbara made for TV DC superheroes movie. Batman,Robin,Green Lantern,Flash,Hawkman,Captain Marvel,Black Canary,Huntess and Retired Man team up to stop the Legion of Doom from destroying the world.
Cheesy and cheap. But a fun watch. Plus you got Marsha Warfield as a nosey lady who spends most of the movie hanging out in a phone booth near what I guess is the only gas station in the town.

Anywhere that has a full list of all the Hanna Barbara DC made for TV movies? I thought it would be easy enough to find, but a lot of places count this as a 2 episode TV show, which is jamming up my detective work.

And it has both parts.

76. The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)77. The Lone Ranger (2003) 78. Brewster's Millions (1945)79. Star Trek: First Contact (1996) 80. Captain America (1979)As I said in a previous post, I've been trying to watch all the pre-X-Men Marvel movies I can find. The old Reb Brown Captain America TV movies have been particularly difficult to track down. Today I broke down and decided to just pay the $3.99 and watch the first one on Amazon streaming. This is pretty meh. Reb Brown plays Steve Rogers as kind of a meathead, Steve doesn't suit up as Cap until more then 2/3rds of the way through the movie, and the ending is pretty anti-climatic, with Cap doing little more then trying to stop the bad guy from suffocating. But if you like those cheesy old late-70's/early-80's action shows like Bionic Woman, Knight Rider and The A-Team, and I do to a degree, then this is a perfectly cromulent entry into that genre. Now, how am I gonna find the sequel? Because it is not on Amazon streaming.

*Disney+
Yeah, this one doesn't hold up very well. A lot of the story beats are fine but it doesn't fully click for me and there are some questionable at best moments. [**½]

115. Cruella - Saw this in theaters. I went with some relatives and was invited, so I thought "why not?" I got to say that Emma Stone did a damn fine job as the titular character, the same could be said about Emma Thompson as Baroness. There was a lot of great storytelling about how Cruella De Vil came to be. Also, the soundtrack was great. A lot of classics were played in the movie, as well as a good cover of the Cruella theme song. Definitely lives up to the hype.
Now I am tempted to watch the animated version of 101 Dalmations, as well as the live-action version of 101 Dalmations with Glenn Close.

66. The Hangover Part III
The Wolfpack has to find Chow and the $21 million he stole. A little less outrageous and chaotic than the first two movies. I’m not sure if it is the right word, but this one felt more….angry and mean. Still worth watching but I am glad they gave up after this one.

#191 - Stick It
*Prime
I've always had such a soft spot for this movie. It's a lot of fun, has some good comedic moments, a solid story, and features a hell of a soundtrack. [***½]

170. Brain Sucker* *DVD* It takes a lot for me to say that a movie is bad (even for my questionable tastes) but this movie was some bottom feeding garbage! So of course I liked it. First and foremost it’s transfer to DVD is so bad that it still has all the sound tracking issues of the original VHS. That did get a little annoying. But then there’s the movie itself: a tripped out, nonsensical zero budget shot-on-video trash heap that you’d maybe find on late night basic cable. But not even weekend late night basic cable. This is the kind of thing that would air at 1am Wednesday morning. It’s just all over the place. Which is what makes it awesome. Plot? Forget plot. This is a beautiful mess. And as an added bonus check out the music. The theme is incredible. youtu.be/QjO74qKJNek

67. Self/less
A dying billionaire transfers his consciousness into a healthy younger body, but where did that body come from? It’s a good concept that is pretty well done. The science is vague but not ridiculous. Ben Kingsley does a very odd New York accent. A small girl is traumatized in multiple ways but shakes it all off. At least it has a satisfying ending.

*Hulu
A film filled to the brim with charm. It is funny, endearing, and just a heartwarming story led by phenomenal acting. One of the best movies of 2019. [****½]

171. Mirror Mirror (1990)* *DVD* Another forgotten late-1980’s/early-1990’s horror movie that I only got because it was part of a double feature with another movie I wanted to see (the Brain Sucker). Usually I don’t get around to watching those but I did tonight and it turned out to be a decent slasher-ish movie about about a social outcast who gains evil powers through a cursed mirror. Unfortunately the violence wasn’t too graphic but some of the scenarios that played out were kinda neat. I liked the shower kill.
