I had an itch on one of these two, or maybe it was both. It didn't matter. It's making me want to do the others soon.
117. Clerks - Watched this on DVD. It had been quite a while since I last watched this, or at least the View Askewniverse films in general. With that being said, for some reason some clips of Clerks showed up on my YouTube feed and it led me to watch this. I know that this movie has its following and was quite a hit in some areas. For a movie shot on a $30,000 budget and made a good amount, that's really good even for 1990s standards. Yes, this is definitely an amateur film, whether it was because it was shot in black-and-white (I guess Kevin Smith didn't have the right cameras to shoot in color), the fact that many of the actors were personal friends of Kevin Smith, and that it was shot in a particular space for a good amount of the filming. I had even read that most of the scenes in the Quick Stop were shot at night, at least the interior scenes.
Regarding the film itself, I can tell that it was rather personal on Kevin Smith's part as it reflected on a lot of his own personal experiences of working in a convenience store and such. Even with its amateurish acting, it's still a good movie to watch. Some of the bizarre situations that occurred just made it funny. I might finally check out the original cut sometime. Maybe soon.
118. Mallrats - Watched this on DVD. I felt like watching this one as well. This was the theatrical cut, by the way. In regards to these films, this one was one of my favorites as it was definitely ahead of its time. Being that it was the mid-1990s when this came out, it was definitely before teen movies became all of the rage, especially the big boom of teen flicks of the late-1990s to early-2000s, but it was clear that Kevin Smith was trying to do it in the style of the ones from the 1980s like the ones from John Hughes like Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Also, with it being ahead of its time was the Stan Lee cameo (Way before Marvel started doing it, and even he had a cameo in the first X-Men movie, which came out five years after this one did), and Brodie being a comic book fan, this really showed that this was done at a different time before certain things became all of the rage.
This one was a bit wackier than Clerks, whether it's the scenes with Jay & Silent Bob, or even some of the other situations that they all went through. I mean, yes, Clerks also had some bits that were bizarre, but not like how they were done in this one. I even thought that Jason Lee and Jeremy London had some good chemistry, despite seeming like they were from two different worlds. It's definitely a movie that I enjoyed back then and still enjoy to this day.
On another note, I kind of want to revisit the extended cut, even though that felt like a different movie than the original cut. I had also read that Arrow Video released a Blu Ray with the TV cut in there. It's kind of tempting, especially since I want to hear the horrible dubbing of Jay's voice. That was funny to hear.
Next up I will do Chasing Amy and Dogma.

81. Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979) 82. Bruce Almighty (2003) 83. Evan Almighty (2007)I really didn't want to watch this after Bruce Almighty, but curiosity just go the best of me. For all my problems with the first movie, it felt like the way God taught Jim Carrey his lesson was the only way he could really do it due to hubris. In this movie it just feels like God is screwing around with a generally nice guy just for kicks. It all felt so unnecessary.

#199 - Akira
*Hulu
I can't believe it took me so long to see this. The story is pretty good but I was blown away by some of the characters and the visuals. The animation holds up so well even after decades. [****]
#200 - In The Heights (second time seeing it)

119. Chasing Amy - Watched this on DVD. Man, how long had it been since I last watched this fully? Continuing on my little kick of the Askewniverse, I'm glad I revisited this one. Maybe I won't take as long as I did from the last time. Anyway, this movie totally screams 1990s. Like Clerks before it, this movie is reflective on Kevin Smith's personal experiences, especially since he was in a relationship with Joey Lauren Adams at some point, as well as was interested in a lesbian woman. So I can see how personal this movie was.
I remember watching this at 15 and enjoying it, but now that I'm older, I understand it much better. Not that I didn't at the time, at least to some degree, but things make much more sense to me now, especially when going on the subject about Alyssa's sexual orientation, as well as Banky's objection towards Holden's relationship with Alyssa, among such as other things like toxic masculinity, male entitlement, etc., things that wouldn't even be considered a thing until the 2010s (Man, Kevin Smith was ahead of his time in his writing). I would give Kevin Smith credit for writing a script that worked when other times this type of concept wouldn't work. I could mention Gigli, but I heard that the original cut was much different than what was given in the end.
However, what stood out to me were the performances. I know people had given Ben Affleck a lot of flack for his acting, but he didn't do such a bad job in this. The person who really stood out, in my opinion, was Joey Lauren Adams. Those scenes when she did those emotional monologues, she really floored me in some areas and she did so well in those scenes. She was one of the best parts of the film. Being that this was a romantic comedy-drama, there was some comedy here and there, especially in the only scene with Jay & Silent Bob.
Now I must revisit Dogma, but I am also tempted to revisit my Chasing Dogma comic trade. Then I'll do Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, and then I'll do Clerks II, and finally, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, even though I had heard mixed opinions about that one.

68. The Tomorrow War
Time travelers from 2051 come back to recruit soldiers to fight off an alien invasion. Two and s as half hours seems like a long run time but they manage to tell two complete stories in that. Cool monsters. Well done battle scenes. Just enough humor scattered throughout the whole thing. A very enjoyable movie.

176. The Strangeness* *Tubi* This happened. I watched it. But I was too busy msg’ing with Ryan about how much it sucked to bother watching it. It took place inside a mine so bad 1980’s lighting + being in a dimly lit mine = not good. The soundtrack was kinda neat and the two seconds I saw of the monster was cool. Plus the blonde girl was hot, but alas too clothed.

*Blu-Ray
It’s just the kind of thing I want. I love the style, humor, action, and overall message that the film tells. It’s already a favorite of mine and I could see it becoming a cult classic. [****]

177. Beyond/Orgy of/Terror of the Living Dead/the Hanging Woman/Return of the Zombies* *Tubi* Trying to figure out how many titles this movie goes under was more interesting than the movie itself. And there were more titles mentioning zombies and the living dead than there were in the movie. I will admit that the zombies looked pretty cool in this one. Nothing crazy like in a Fulci movie, just some grey makeup. But very well done. And they were fresh bodies so that’s pretty much how it should be. A lot of hot European girls took their clothes off but that bores me. Even if one or two of them were dead.

178. Brutal* *tubi* I wanted to watch this because it had my waifu Asami in it. It didn’t have English subtitles on Tubi so I don’t really know what was going on. Oh who am I kidding? Even with subtitles I never have any idea what’s going on in these crazy Japanese movies I watch. This was a lot more violent than what I’d usually watch from that side of the world. But it’s an Unearthed Films release so I did want to watch it even before I knew she was in it. What I can gather is some dude really hates women. And some lady kills “johns”. Maybe there’s some other deep-rooted plot in there? There was a young couple who kept appearing so maybe they were discussing quantum physics as they relate to geopolitical issues? Or maybe they were just there to break up the guy turning his victims into liquid with a hammer and flushing their remains down the toilet? Nah, definitely deep-rooted discussions on social commentary. Some good music though. And a surprisingly touching sub-plot involving a homeless man that proves that psychopaths have hearts too.

Blue Velvet-Encore airing-8 outta 10
I'm a huge Lynch fan. And the only film of his I don't like is Dune. Blue Velvet is one of the most mainstream films he has done, outside of say Straight Story. It has a great cast. And captures that nightmare/dream logic feel that Lynch is great at.

120. Dogma - Watched this on DVD. Before I get into this, let me make this clear that because of the irreverently satirical nature of this film, especially when tackling topics about religion, particularly Catholicism, I'm just going to talk about the movie itself and not its topic. I even remember how there was a lot of controversy for this film when it came out. I don't need to go into that.
Now with that out of the way, I will say that with me revisiting Kevin Smith's films after a good amount of time (and I loved these films when I was a teen; this was still pre-Clerks II) that many of them still hold up. Granted, like the other ones before this, the subject matter of his films was based on stuff that happened in Kevin Smith's life, and I suppose that the major theme for this one likely was based on stuff from Smith's life. After all, the script for this was written years before its release. I even remember that it was supposed to follow Clerks, except we had Mallrats and Chasing Amy before this one.
All I can say is that if you have an open mind and have a sense of humor, then this movie still holds up. Alan Rickman was great in his role. Chris Rock made me laugh a few times. Salma Hayek, aside from that scene in the movie (which was a nice sight, by the way), she was pretty entertaining, as was Jason Lee. However, you can clearly see that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were hamming it up in some scenes. They were clearly chewing up the scenery in a lot of the scenes that they were in. Subject matter aside, this movie is still entertaining in its satire. I can see that with Kevin Smith still being in his 20s when he did the four movies prior to Strike Back, they were more of a "write what you know" type of thing, as that is something on the TV Tropes website.

#202 - Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone
*4K Blu-Ray
Better than Chamber of Secrets to me, though behind the rest of the films in the series. It works as a way to setup this massive universe and does well in aiming towards children. There are issues with effects, the length and some of the conflict near the end, but this was a satisfying first installment. It’s wonderfully faithful to the source material and has a heart of gold. The itch was there. I couldn't resist. I watched both of these on DVD, by the way.
121. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - I knew that I wasn't going to go through the View Askewniverse marathon without going through this one. I loved this film as a teenager, and I had asked myself a few times in recent memory how it would hold up. Never mind the fact that this movie is dated with certain things that were relevant in the late-1990s to early-2000s (in other words, the turn of the millennium), but this movie is one long inside joke. I will tell you that even when I was 15 that I was glad that I watched the other four films prior to watching this one. In spite of some inside jokes and how this one was wackier than the others (even Mallrats), the comedy still holds up in some areas. Yes, there were some nods to Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, and there was also a touch of reference to Dogma. Now I know that this film was a bit flawed in some areas, especially with its inside jokes and fourth-wall breaking, but it's still entertaining enough.
However, despite how dated it is, it also touched on the internet. Although it wasn't as prevalent as it had become (then again, I wasn't going through IMDB boards as early as 2001, at least not until a couple of years later; though there were user reviews), especially later in the 2000s through the 2010s as well as now, it has become even bigger of a thing with people whining about stuff like movies being made.
122. Clerks II - In spite of some really out there bits, especially that scene towards the end, I'll give Kevin Smith a lot of credit for doing a follow-up to his first film and showing what the two main characters were up to after a decade. No question that both Dante and Randall were still really flawed human beings, but one of them only a grew a tad, but when taking a closer look at the characters, the story did work. Some of the bizarre situations that they got into ramped up a bit compared to the first film. There may have been less Jay and Silent Bob this time, but I suppose that Smith wanted to be behind the camera for the majority of the filming. Hell, they didn't have that big of a role in the original, so I guess that's why they were hardly in the movie, or at least involved in the main plot. As for the comedy, some bits worked, and there were some funny bits. I won't deny that there were some well-written and well-acted scenes that gave me the feels in some areas, either.
I must note that I was initially watching this after watching Clerks, but I wanted to do all of these in chronological order. It had been a long time since I watched these movies and I felt it was better to do it that way.
I'm not done, by the way. I still have Jay & Silent Bob Reboot to do, about which I had heard that people are really divisive. I am also thinking of watching the original cut of Clerks soon, but I might mark that as a repeated viewing. As for the extended cut of Mallrats, that's a good question as that felt like a different film in some areas.
I also think I should watch these films with the commentary, at least the ones with Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Scott Mosier, as well as cast members.
