#208 - Sleeping Beauty
*Disney+
Better than I remember and probably the best Disney Animated film to this point. The visuals are really good for its time and the story is solid. [***½]

I will mark these two as RV (Repeated Viewing), despite being different cuts. One of them felt like a different film to an extent, however. I watched them on DVD, by the way. - Clerks: The First Cut - Now that I have finally seen this version, I must note that there are some differences. Aside from the rather dark downer ending, I can see that some scenes were omitted for a reason. One example being a reference to another character before being mentioned later. I know many bits were cut out in the final cut, but even when seeing some scenes in this version, it felt weird. It even felt weird without some music played in the background, or at least a different song was played. But I'm glad I finally saw it, though. I have had the Clerks DVD set for years but I never watched this version all the way through, although I did see the ending. Still, it's better to stick with the theatrical cut.
- Mallrats: Extended Version - This wasn't the first time that I had seen this version, nor was it the first time I had watched it with the intro from Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier. Some of the points they made were valid in that intro that it became apparent when watching it. I mean you really needed to see some of the obvious edits made when some scenes were added in, like weird jump cuts, lines appearing on the visuals, odd lighting and coloring during some scenes and would quickly change. Even then, with this one having a somewhat different plot than the theatrical version, it did almost feel like a different film altogether. I would still watch it again, though. However, the theatrical version was the superior version.
I might check out Kevin Smith's other films that weren't part of this series/universe. Hell, I might check out other View Askew movies that weren't done by Smith, such as Drawing Flies, A Better Place, and Vulgar someday, maybe even soon. I also plan to check out the Askewniverse films with the commentary, but I'll give it time before I do that.

I’m not sure it counts as a movie but the boy and I watched The Star Wars Holiday Special today. My god that thing is awful. I always forget just how bad it is. An almost nonexistent plot. Terrible acting. Bizarre guest stars. Harvey Korman being painfully unfunny in three separate roles. An absurd cartoon in the middle. There is really nothing right about this show.

183. Haute Tension* *DVD* I’m not sure how I learned of this one or what made me want to buy it but I’m glad I did. It’s a typical slasher/action horror but a little higher on the brutality of the violence. What really set it apart from others in the music, which added so much to the atmosphere. I’m not so sure about the ending though. There were extremely subtle hints that you’d only know by reading about them. Way too subtle. But bravo to the director for not dumbing it down.

Watched a few films today
Money Plane
Has no betting opportunities on watching a guy f*** an alligator so very disappointed. Also so glad these guys went on a plane out of the reach of law enforcement to…..play poker!
Cabaret
Was inspired to watch this about bingeing schitts creek. Should have just rewatched their version of it. Dull as ditchwater. Looked it up on IMDb and this got 8 oscars? What the hell man
A Quiet Place Part 2
Enjoyable and had some really tense moments but ultimately kinda felt like a rehash of the first film. Best of what I watched today

184. Door 1 of the 5 Doors to Hell* *Tubi* A guy posting in FANs horror movie thread brought to our attention a movie he made a few years ago that was streaming on Tubi so me and a few of the other posters decided to check it out, and it wasn’t half bad. All aspects were obviously “no budget” but that’s never stopped me from enjoying a movie. It’s a sort of anthology about a demonic VHS. The fourth segment was the best because the characters were self-aware of what was going on. Some decent gore and a really wicked synth soundtrack.

This movie is certainly not for everyone but I had a blast with it. There's a ton of fun to be had, some really creative action scenes, and a fun cast of characters. It's the most stylish action flick of the year. [****]

125. 3 Strikes - Watched this on DVD. I had an itch to watch this lately (maybe it was because I was listening to the soundtrack; it's a good rap/hip-hop compilation, by the way) and I am having a hard time remembering when the last time I saw this was. I even remember having the VHS for it. Good thing that I bought this at a new/used bookstore a while back and I had to dig this up from somewhere.
For what it is, it's a fun comedy. It's dumb fun, not meant to be taken seriously in the slightest bit. It's pretty low budget, too. I mean one of the biggest names in the movie is E-40, whose bad acting was actually funny to watch. Even David Alan Grier was funny in his role as a detective. It's not a long movie at all as this movie is not a bad way to pass an hour and 22 minutes. I have always felt that this was an underrated comedy.
Fun fact: Franklin from GTA V also appeared as an inmate in this movie.

185. The Dead Pit* *Tubi* This was decent enough forgotten slasher/zombie movie. The atmosphere backdrop of the asylum really worked and while the zombies were really cheesy the gore was excellent. The three leads (Jeremy Slate, Cheryl Lawson and Stephen Gregory Foster) were really enjoyable too. Ultimately I’d have liked more gore and Cheryl Lawson take her top off more but this was a fun one to watch.

126. Drawing Flies - Watched this on DVD. Okay, after I went through my View Askewniverse marathon (including Clerks: The Animated Series), I thought about checking out the View Askew films that weren't directed by Kevin Smith. I started with this one, and I must say that like Clerks, it's rather amateurish and low-budget. Now I know Clerks has its fans, but with this being from a different writer and directors, this is different than Smith's films. For what it is, it's not all that bad and there are some funny moments. It dragged on in some areas. Jason Lee did fine in his role, as did Jason Mewes in a non-Jay role. Renee Humphrey (she was Trish in Mallrats) and Carmen Lee (who was Jason Lee's wife at the time) didn't do badly with what they had to work with, although Renee Humphrey was the better actress of the two women. The other guy, Martin Brooks, well he could have been better. It's a student film that got some buzz, like how Clerks was.
I must also note that I found out after I put on the DVD that there is a director's cut. Not sure if I want to check it out this soon, especially with this being checked out from the library. Maybe I will buy it. There are a couple of commentary tracks that I want to listen to.
As for other non-Kevin Smith films of View Askew, there are also Vulgar and A Better Place, both of which aren't comedies from what I have heard. I'll check them out down the road.

186. Contracted* *DVD* This reminded me of Cloverfield, as it started with a party that everyone I never wanted anything to do with being there and me praying for the Statue of Liberty’s head to come flying through the window. Except this one has a couple IN YOUR FACE f*** YOU I’M A LESBIAN I’M A LESBIAN neurotic lesbians who you want to see get crushed by a monster foot even more. No monster feet in this one though; just an STD that causes a lot of blood from…places followed by ear splitting hallucinations, a rash, a bloody eye, vaginal maggots, teeth falling out, puking blood; you know. By the third day you’ll have lost most of the feeling in your body and your hair will start falling out. But your biggest problem will still be your mom ALWAYS BEING ON YOUR DAMN BACK and your boss demanding you still come to work despite your fingernails coming off in the salads your preparing. Sadly the the one you really want to see get “it” gets nothing and the girl who does get “it” you almost feel bad for if she wasn’t still a total bitch to everyone around her in spite of her body decomposing. But you can still get totally high. It was very reminiscent of a movie I saw a few months ago called Thanatomorphose except not as dark, disturbing and gory. I wouldn’t say this is a PG-13 version of that movie. This is just rated-R while that’s NC-17. The big problem, if you didn’t get it from my first paragraph, was that I still hated the main character, the supporting characters, the characters who are in one scene, the characters who were cut from the script…the caterers. To the point where when the girl finally loses it and it’s supposed to be all tense and climactic I started laughing and got great joy. I didn’t hate it though. I actually liked it. Yes, for some of the wrong reasons. But the part where she French kisses another girl but puked blood into her mouth was pretty cool.

127. Space Jam: A New Legacy - Saw this in theaters. I went to see this with my cousin. I know a lot of people are slamming this online, but I had a lot of fun with this. Yes, LeBron James is no actor, but he did better than Michael Jordan in the original. Don Cheadle looked like he was having a blast playing the villain, and he was entertaining in the role. As for other things, I can't hate the visuals of the animation, whether it's the 2D animation or the CGI animation. Does it live up to the 1996 original? Well, that's hard to say. I might watch it again soon to compare, but I still had fun with this one.
