So I had never watched MST3K before. I’d seen bits & pieces, but it never looked all that interesting to me. But over Christmas, I decided to watch their episode with ‘Santa Claus Conquers the Martians’ (I’ve been binging on a ton of Christmas movies & shows this holiday season), and I found it to be pretty amusing.
I’ve checked out a little more of MST3K since then and am getting a kick out of it. Their 24/7 channel has become one of my regular stops on Pluto TV.
So, a question for the MST3K fans (I know we have a few here)... As a new fan, what are some of the essential best episodes that I should seek out?

(Part of me was hoping you were going to ask 'How do they eat and breathe? And other science facts.' ) While every MST3K fan has their own personal references, the episodes universally considered among the best are: Manos: Hand of Fate The Final Sacrifice Mitchell Final Justice Hobgoblins Time Chasers Prince of Space and any of the Gamera movies And 2 of my personal favorites: Werewolf, Overdrawn At The Memory Bank.

Add to that list Cave Dwellers and Pod People and you should be covered just fine.

Also on Pluto go down another channel and try the Rifftrax channel. It’s the same guys from the later seasons and it’s just about the same except there aren’t any silhouettes in the bottom. And I don’t know if you know it or not, but you can go to “Tubi” and they’ve got pretty much all the episodes to stream. Have fun with em.

Squirm. Not so much for the movie, but for the short.

Oh nice one...in that regard the other Russo-Finnish fairy tale movies the show covered are good, too (The Day The Earth Froze, The Magic Voyage Of Sinbad, The Sword And The Dragon).

Santa Claus, the other holiday special (now with Mike on the cast), is no slouch either.
Watch Screaming Skull, only for what they watch before the movie ;-)

So, a question for the MST3K fans (I know we have a few here)... As a new fan, what are some of the essential best episodes that I should seek out? I'll say this, there's some episodes you'll be recommended as classics (which they rightfully are) as favorites by the fans, but you may want to wait a bit before you try them to get a been more acclimated with the series and your tolerance levels up. Like, 'Manos: Hands of Fate' and 'Horrors of Spider Island' are both excellent, but that's like learning to swim on the deep end. 'Pod People,' 'Eegah' and 'Bride of the Monster' are probably your three best starters, both in terms of accessibility, hilarity and how often they get referenced in later episodes. I'd recommend doing 'Mitchell' and 'The Brain that Wouldn't Die' back-to-back for the full Joel-Mike transition. Best places to start with the Sci-Fi years are 'Hobgoblins,' 'Werewolf' and 'Space Mutiny.' Welcome to the Satellite of Love!

Laserblast is also an essential one, though you may want to watch Escape 2000 beforehand as a running gag from that film is referenced in Laserblast.

One lesser talked about episode if you can find it would be "Teenage Caveman".
Two shorts before it are fun (second one being one of the best not-Mr. B shorts of the Joel era), and the movie is goofy bad and has a fun running gag they do in the last part of things.

My favorites for newbies are probably: Beginning of The End (but that might be because I live in Illinois! This is probably my favorite black and white movie episode) Werewolf (this one is amazing throughout! With some fun host gags that spill over into the movie) Laserblast (This one is really easy to digest and has thoroughly unlikable characters that are great when crapped on) Pumaman (I love when they do little jingles) Fugitive Alien 1&2 (Pretty fast paced movies and Joel and the Bots really do a good job interacting with each other and their made up character personas for the movie) Mitchel (What needs to be said about this one?) Space Mutiny (So very good. The movie is so bad it practically riffs itself)
Damn, I love so many I might as well list them all!
My all time favorite is probably Overdrawn At The Memory Bank - But the movie itself might not be everyone's cup of tea and can be awfully slow. The host segments in it are amazing.
If you want to try rifftrax, I think their finest works are either R.O.T.O.R. or The Apple... Though if you want to burn your soul Wizzo and Fun in Balloonland are legendarily bad but have great riffs.
