Story pondering opinion: should this be the movie that Super Sonic debuts if they want to put him in, or should they save that for the third film if they get one?

Can set it up for the third movie, I imagine. Have enough with Tails, Knuckles and the Master Emerald being involved. Can have it being background stuff to hint at what's to come. Might even get towards Mobius itself next movie. Question is who they'd use for that.

I'd think the next movie would be Shadow just because he kind of has a lot more name value than Metal Sonic.

I hope not. No offense to his fans, but I feel that anything with Shadow after Adventure 2 was a scar on his story from that game. Metal Sonic at least would make sense in universe with movie Robotnik after this movie: an organic ally "fails" him, so why not use Sonic's abilities in a more loyal mechanical version?

His first game oddly enough was a fitting conclusion to his story arc, I think too many fans just warmed up to Shadow over the years and liked seeing him interact with the rest of the cast in different games/comics/fan works.

Knuckles sounds eerily like Chief Bogo from Zootopia, but it still fits his character somehow.

I love that this trailer is like the opposite of the original trailer for the first film, rather than being ashamed of its video game roots it just embraces and revels in it. Knuckles, Tails, classic Eggman look, the Emeralds, the Tornado, even nods to the Ice Cap Zone and (although probably unintentional) Sonic and Tails' disguises in the bar scene look like Sonic's alias of Bob Beaky from Sonic The Comic. It's just... Fun. Who knew?

Also somewhat of a reference to the highway level from Adventure 1 to me.

There's a big Viacom investor event today and what was basically announced was another sequel and a Paramount+ spin-off with Knuckles and Idris Elba reprising the role.

So Sega just announced that Sonic is getting a 3rd live action moving and a live action paramount plus show

Honestly, the coolest part of the Knuckles news is there's now much better odds of seeing the extended cast in live action. Some of it might take place on Earth sure, but anything beyond that will have the roles be filled by the various established characters.

Also there's a decent chance this might make Ken Penders mad, so everybody wins.
