I'm having fun with people who claim their TLOU fans and are melting down that this series isn't Joel mowing down and killing people and that they made Bill gay (they missed the obvious signs.) Thank God Druckman is running this show and not someone like Zack Snyder. I love the changes they made from the game so far.

Wait there's people who didn't realize Bill's gay? It's not even subtext. I shouldn't be that surprised though, there's people who threw a shit fit about Renly and Loras being gay in Game of Thrones.

Went to bed thinking about that episode. Woke up thinking about that episode. Mostly about what it was trying to say about love. "I was never afraid, until you showed up." Love is caring. It’s obviously a lot more than that. But it all comes back to caring deeply for another person. And because you care, that means their will be pain and heatach. There’s going to come a time when that person isn’t there anymore. Or your not going to be there for that person anymore. It took the world ending, but Bill found that someone. Or maybe better to say that that someone found him. Frank makes him care. And that caring makes him realize that it’s all worth. The worrying, the pain, and the heartbreak is what makes us human. And that’s what this show is ultimately about. Joel is a man who’s had his heart ripped out. Even his relationship with Tess seemed to be something where it just made sense. There was no actual love there. Because will not allow himself to be hurt that deeply again. But Bill, in one of his last acts, Bill takes the time to tell Joel what Frank helped him to realize. It’s all worth it. Losing Sarah is a pain that will never go away. But it’s still okay to let yourself care.

And you can see basically the regret Joel has in that she is gone but he’s not allowing himself to feel The day he finally has that emotional breakdown will be powerful. You can already see in his banter for Ellie he is starting to get attached. His instincts as a dad hasn’t gone away.

I can't tell you the shows I've watched that made it pretty clear that characters were LGBTQ+ and still come across people in fandoms who try to insist they're straight, or whatever was going on was platonic. It's amazing how people just can't let things... be.

"I'm not a homophobe, I just hate that they made changes from the game!" "Why can't they leave politics out of it? Hollywood needs to stop forcing their agenda down our throats!" "That whole episode was pointless woke garbage!" The responses to Season 2 are going to be fun.

Even if Bill wasn’t gay in the game, imagine caring that he was gay in the show. That story is more interesting because he’s gay. Because it explains so much about why Bill was the way he was. He’s a doomsday preppier. He loves guns. Surely he can’t be gay? As if being gay means you have to be any one thing. Those prejudices are so deeply ingrained within us, that it was probably a lie Bill told himself. Better to just isolate yourself from everyone, than to come to terms with who you are. But Frank helps him accept what he’s always known. The message that the writers are trying to put across wouldn’t have had the same impact if it was a man falling in love with a woman. Bill has to come to his realization, so that he can help Joel come to his.

He’s a true, blue, dyed in the wool loves his guns, “don’t tread on me” doomsday prepper, who is also a gay man with a penchant for fine dining. That’s an insanely fascinating dichotomy for a character to have.

Wow.
What a way to flesh out something so small in the game, to get to the same place, and make everything around it so much better.
Anyone hating on that episode needs to take a look inside themselves because it was about as perfectly done a 'side episode' as you could get.

spoilered as the show has just finished about 40 minutes ago in the uk. {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}I understand the choice of building up Bill's backstory in the show so that you have the emotional gut punch of his death, but it seems a waste of a character to do so when he could be of use towards the end of the series or in the next series.
that said they weren't sure there would be a second series until recently, but still a weird choice to kill off a character you could use later. unless they pull a "well he didn't die on screen, we just implied he died." retcon in future, but that would cheapen the impact of this episode.

I dont think it's a waste when the impact will be far reaching enough that the lesson from this episode will be what comes back and likely have much more of an impact than the actual character turning up again.
