I saw a few idol bands when I lived in Japan (not through choice, they just have a habit of popping up in shopping malls to do short concerts) and you can really see how her idol training has fed into her wrestling persona. Just the way she interacts with the camera and the crowd, it comes from a different angle than most wrestlers.
Idols purposely try and connect with their audience on a (fake) personal level to hook them into spending stupid amounts of money, so it's not surprising Maki is hooking wrestling fans, too.

The Idol industry in Japan is also all kinds of messed up.

The funny thing about Maki’s idol history is that TJPW has its own idol unit and they are more featured/pushed than her. There’s also the irony that she is still very much an idol under the guise of wrestling, which of course, is part of the charm.

I can't wait for the fund raising of her fee through The Dark Order bake sale.

Even more on-point fanart of Itoh being around/taking over Dark Order abounds. Via Reddit, Dino Champ presents "The Queen of Simps":

I find it funny that some people are saying Maki won't get over in America because people are unfamiliar with japanese idol culture. They don't have to be familiar with it. you just have to describe the bare basics of Maki being fired from a pop group she was a part of. And so many idol aspects are so similar to wrestling, that they'll easily convert to wrestling fans taste. Maki saying who's the cutest in the world already sounds like something a wrestler would say. If anything , I think she might introduce a lot of wrestling fans out of japan to idol culture.

They could never mention she's an ex idol and she'll get over. She has enough charisma, character and sense of humor to be HUGE in the US without one person knowing what idol culture is. And it's not like we have a show called American Idol or anything, or Blackpink and BTS didn't have top 10 hits on the charts this year. You're 100% right that the concept of being fired from a pop group will make sense to almost anyone watching TV. Anyone who says otherwise is grasping at straws.

JR would need more explanation than the majority of the audience would, which is a whole other (...hopefully minor) issue.

Yeah, having been in a 1000-person show that she showed up at, I doubt everyone in there was up on the idol culture enough to get the gimmick and she got over as f*** immediately.

Can anyone tell me what a simp is?
I have seen it used in a derogatory manner and don't understand how it's "cute" when Maki Itoh uses it.

It's similar to white knight, as in it means somebody way too devoted to another person. The word of course has completely evolved as people started to mock it's origin, and use the word for anything they like. Like saying "I simp for this burger place". Of course Maki's whole thing as she uses vulgar language, so the word fits as joking and tongue in cheek way to refer to her fans.

Its weird to explain, but it kinda went full circle where female personalities ,in some cases, use it for their fanbases,if they are the punk time. You knwo how Itoh`s is full of degeneracy, foul words ,self-loathing humor? It is the same way with being called a simp by her. They identify with the degeneracy and dirty ,self-loathing humor and embrace the joke.

Simp is just a way to say someone who is too overly devoted to someone, most of the time not getting any sort of affection in return. Basically overbearing fanboys.
