I figured the same thing. I'm surprised Vince or Bischoff didn't also have a similar named character. There was a wwf jobber named Bruce Mitchell in the early 90s.

I was watching the two Andre appearances on youtube yesterday and you can really tell how happy he is to be back on TV.
I know what little time left he had would probably be better spent in WWF, no way Herb could find a suitable storyline or match for him but it's a shame that Andre didn't see that Vince only wanted him because someone else had him.
I'll never understand Andre's contract situation but Vince either sent Andre to the wayside or let him go after Wrestlemania and had no desire to keep him wrestling (probably for Andre's own good). I know Vince loved Andre but with the UWF situation, him asking Andre back wasn't because he loved him or wanted Andre to be happier in WWF, it was because no one else could have Andre but Vince. I'm glad his last U.S. appearance was with WCW. It sucks he and Vince didn't reconcile after that but Vince deserved knowing Andre wanted to keep going and would go to another promotion if Vince didn't want him.

Just saw an original copy of the Premiere Issue Official Event Program of the UWF popped up on eBay. A bunch of the wrestlers even autographed it! Before anyone gets too excited though check out the hefty price tag⦠I know inflation has gotten bad but this is rather steep. Costing $2.00 in 1990, this item can be yours for a starting bid of $585.00 (plus $5.30 shipping).

I was at a wrestling con in Queens in 1990 when there was a press conference announcing UWF. It was a dumpster fire and a half. I didnt really let on what I thought about it when I talked to wrestlers about it at the con. Bruno seemed excited by it, Cactus Jack and Dan Spivey seemed to like getting a paid booking.
Years later, watching the episodes again, and the PPV, I find it special how bad yet good it was. Greg from Botchamania has fantastic write ups about episodes on Blog of Doom. Reading them, I find myself nostalgic for the neverending DQ and countout finishes, the fake cheering, and the untrained jobbers. Really, a special time I didnt realize until decades later.

I love that this thread keeps going. UWF will live on forever in wrestling lore.
I'm hoping members keep checking member Jonathan Plombon's book on Herb and UWF!

Low key I like how Mick Foley never has anything but good things to say about Herb in spite of Herb by all accounts being a paranoid out of control coke head.

Low key I like how Mick Foley never has anything but good things to say about Herb in spite of Herb by all accounts being a paranoid out of control coke head. I think he appreciated that Herb was arguably the first promoter who really got behind him. He'd done alright in Texas, but still, Herb probably pushed him harder than anyone had previously. He also was probably just too comical a figure in some respects for him to get mad at him.

I think Mick's quote from the end of The UWF Dark Side of The Ring episode says it best about taking the bad with the good: Interviewer: If Herb was alive today what would he be doing? Mick: (Jail)Time!

I wonder. Did Abrams have to pay Bill Watts to use the UWF name?

I wonder. Did Abrams have to pay Bill Watts to use the UWF name? I'm trying to remember what was written about that in the book but I think someone on his staff asked why he was using the Watts name and he said it was just initials, anyone can use them.

Apparently this almost happened. But Herb and Hulk couldn't come to terms on money. Imagine how different the wrestling landscape would be if he did?

May as well hang out in Wrest today cause I fear a certain thread in the WWE folder. And talk about this because I have been reading the book.
Random fact I did not see coming....
Marty Cohen was a UWF booker for awhile.
So Match Game can be less-than-six-degreed to the Abrams UWF.
