Episode 30 – Submit to the Master

Recaps of:
1) Sexy Star and Penta (with added crunchy sound effects)
2) The Crew losing the ladder match

Striker had a handy line in the recaps about Penta having to answer to his master after losing to Sexy Star. Without it, I would not have got the episode title until later on when they presumably make an appearance.

Dario meets with Chavo and says that he thought Chavo quit and wants to know why he’s here. Chavo informs him that Black Lotus is here to kill his brother and this time has been trained by “you know who” (turns out he does know who).

Ooh, intrigue. Dario says that it was Chavo’s job to take care (or possibly “take care”) of Lotus. Chavo explains that El Dragon Azteca got to her first. Dario claims that it’s impossible and Dragon wouldn’t dare to step foot in the Temple and he must have somebody working for him on the inside.

Chavo lets Dario in on the deal that he got from the Dragon man and gives Dario the chance to put in a bid for his loyalty. Chavo wants round the clock protection, which Dario agrees to before asking what Chavo really wants.

Dario (or more accurately Luis) was fantastic in that segment. He’s usually very good anyway, but there was something in there that time that pushed it to another level.

Rayobacks are still the house band, and this week sound nothing like Metallica. The singer does kind of look like Robert Downey Jr though.



And I’ve found the gimmick for this band: They’ll kind of look/sound like somebody different every week.

Jack Evans vs Argenis

While Evans mocks the crowd and talks about how great he is, Vampiro gives a history lesson on the origin of the word “gringo”.

Unless Evans is starting his LU career with a losing streak gimmick, I think he’s winning this one.

Before we get going, the boss exits his office. Dario tells Argenis that while he comes from a great Lucha family, nobody really cares about him. And Jack Evans has only had one match and he lost. To make things interesting, the winner gets an Aztec Medallion (number 2 of 7, Fenix has the first), which will being great fortune.

Striker mentions the brothers of Argenis who also wrestle and I just had to go and look one of them up:

Jack makes all the fancy stuff look so easy.

That elevated guardrail really gives lots of opportunity for some unique stuff. Speaking of unique:



Backslide with a bridge and that’s enough for the win. Argenis is not happy, but he’s got no legit gripe on that one.

In the locker room, Daivari informs Ryck that Dario has given them a trios title match tonight. Ryck invites The Mack to be their third, but Cage interrupts things and suggests himself. Well, there’s only one way to find out which they should pick:



Cage wins the fight and the place on the team. Ryck follows the others when they leave, not looking too impressed with The Mack.

Moving over to another (the women’s?) locker room, Chavo talks to Black Lotus. He lets her know that Dario is allowing her to compete in the temple. She asks ‘what about Matanza’ (I will stop calling him monster in the cage at some point) and Chavo assures her ‘All in good time’, he’ll get the key, free the monster and she can kill him in front of the world.



Chavo gives away his betrayal by growling. Lotus blocks the punch with the locker door and then shows off what Aztec Dragon has taught her.
Chavo calls in his reinforcements: The Goons! They fare as well as you might expect. Luckily, they provide enough of a distraction for Chavo to knock out Lotus.

Just think: if they had failed, they’d get another one of them sacrificed and then there’d only be one left and he’d have to stop being part of The Goons and start being The Goon, and nobody wants that gimmick again.

I’m assuming that Chavo just knocks her out with the stick since there’s not much point in handcuffing a dead person.

Seriously, I make one comment about the minimal amount of backstage violence and they all start at it.

LU Trios Titles: Delavar Daivari, Big Ryck, & Cage vs Angelico, Ivelisse, & Son of Havoc

… didn’t Ryck’s eyepatch used to be on the other side? I’m not going to check and instead just believe that it did.
Ryck is smoking, Daivari is drinking… at the risk of nobody getting this reference: Cage should be on rollerblades.
Ivelisse still has her leg in the cast and hops down the steps boringly instead of sliding down on the handrails.

The champs aren’t in imminent danger of losing their titles and therefore aren’t getting along too well. The two guys aren’t helping Ivelisse much and Havoc tags himself in as Angelico is building momentum.

Ivelisse has decided to go and sit in the front row again and coach since she isn’t getting tagged in.



Stalling vertical suplex by Ryck, Cage tags in and takes over without letting Angelico down. Judging by the crowd noise reaction and the fact they switched to a shot of Ivelisse, I’m guessing it didn’t go as smooth as it might have.

While Daivari is pulling the hair of Ivelisse and everybody is distracted, Texano jumps up on the other side of the ring and knocks out Ryck before getting the attention of Daivari. All this over a spilled drink.

The interference is enough, Ryck is down, Angelico takes out Cage, and Havoc hits the SSP on Daivari for the win.

Back in the office of The Bull and Chavo somehow sneaks up on Dario while dragging an unconscious person. A) She’s not unconscious B) The goons are the ones who have her.



Dario says he has a spot for her, right across from his brother so that he never gets lonely again. Aw, isn’t that nice? Wonder if he ever did put a TV up there?



That’s just a creepy look.

Submission Match: Pentagon Jr vs Sexy Star

It’s a Penta Promo before we get into the actual match. He promises he’s going to break Star tonight. It’s a sacrifice he’s going to make to his master because he is…. Getting attacked from behind.

Just when you weren’t getting any .gifs today, this happens:



Penta jogs leisurely into the ringpost and slowly bounces off it.

Penta was holding his elbow earlier, now he’s holding his leg. Is this his subtle way of trying to remind Star that it’s a submission match?

Watch my Vince McMahon on commentary impression. Ahem…. What a manoeuvre!



It looked like he was going for a tombstone, then he turned it into…. that.

Interesting on commentary that they’re bringing up Star’s lack of knowledge when putting on submissions by pointing out all the things she’s doing wrong.

Superkick gets a well deserved “OOOOOOOH!” from the crowd.

Star locks in a single leg crab and Penta is in trouble. It’s Super Fly! Star looks happy to see him, which shows you that the old saying is right: “evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.”



Super Fly powerbombs Star and hands her over to Pentagon who hits a package piledriver followed by a surfboard for the win.



I really wasn’t expecting Super Fly to be involved in this one.
That was probably Star’s best LU match to date.

Time for the arm break? No! Vampiro leaves commentary and knocks Penta down, allowing Star to roll to safety. Penta gets back up and threatens to hit…. Oh, is it Master Vampiro? No! I guess not as Vamp leaves the ring, and the temple itself.

Post credits we join Vampiro in the LU bathroom staring in the mirror while we hear voices in his head, they don’t counsel him, they torment him.
We get a flickering of something on screen (I’ll go back and get a better look in a minute) and the last voice we hear before Vamp headbutts the mirror says that something dark is coming.
A bit of Thunder and we end on a shot of the city.



The flickering is Vamp in pain



Let’s see, current theory: Vamp IS the Master, this is his dark side that he’s kept suppressed trying to resurface and Penta is actively trying to bring that Vamp back by doing stuff that Vamp doesn’t like.

Post Episode & General Thoughts/Questions

- I’m not joking when I say that they could redo things to remove the actual wrestling stuff (just doing highlights of it in a tv show style for story progression) and I’d still watch.
- I’ve been waiting for Mack to show up again to do this one. He’s far too nice – he’s a luchadorable.
- Kevin Dunn saw them showing Ivelisse in the front row and thought that was a great idea, it just needed to be expanded a bit.
- Daivari’s rich gimmick, him tripping on the rope, and Formula 1 being on this weekend leads me to wonder: Has there been a gimmick of somebody being a terrible wrestler but they don't get fired because they bring lots of money and sponsorship deals with them?
- The Vamp stuff is unexpected. It's been building for a little while, but I was just thinking it would end with a Penta arm break.
-Wow, what an episode that one was.
- I got a peek at the next episode title. I get that reference! Also, possibly yay! Also also, hopefully things will work out for a midweek episode.

We are in an amazing home stretch now with season 1 and it only keeps gettin better and better.

Little too much Chavito for my taste but I do love that the writers did not bother dragging out this betrayl because lets be honest everyone knews Chavo is selfish prick on this show and so they are like..yea you know he is an asshole , and we know it so here he is confirmed to be an asshole lol no wasted motion love it.

Funny bit with Jack Evans apparently at the tapings Jack was fiddling with that bag that medallion is in forever lol but this is also because at the time this was taped the medallions were not made yet so Jack is out there fiddlin with an empty bag...not the first time Jack fiddles with a baggie lol.

And more from Jack "MY TESTICALS!!" always cracks me the hell up lol

Loved the suplex switch with Cage and Ryck even though it looked a little wobbly.

And this episode confirmed something I wondered about last week and Penta coming out in the Perros Del Mal shirt and pointing up confirmed that this is when Perro Jr died.

And yeaaa this match is a very close look at how bad sexy star is because the woman could not complete a submission and not even commentary could cover for her just offa doofa and you know it is bad because even referee Marty Elias has to get in there to help do the submission properly lol.

And the final vingette is so great Skip Chaisson producing magic once again.

And whats great about this is that Dario/Luis is only truly beginning to really settle into the role at this point in the show but no one would know it because dude is amazing and just took to this damn wrestling thing like a duck to water or Matanza to muder and he was also helping all the other talents out with their acting and giving his input in scripts mostly with his stuff of course.

I remember you touching on LU's smart use of color and here we see it at work again.

The by comparison calm warm yellow'ish orange of the start of the vingette and then in pain with the cold harsh blue and purple , Skip Chaisson I cannot appreciate you enough sir wherver you may be your attention to all the details is unrivaled.

Such a simplistic easy way to tell a story with absoloutley no dialogue needed you completely understand what is going on with Vamp.

Have I ever said the creative heads on this show knew what the f*** they were doing? because they knew what the f*** they were doing lol.

Episode 31 – The Desolation of Drago

The other week, we had the claim from Dario that: El Dragon Azteca wouldn’t dare set foot in the Temple and must have had somebody working for him on the inside. Somebody like the other Dragon man? It almost seems too obvious.

Drago hanging out on top of the Temple. To be fair, he was only banished from inside it.

HE’S GOT WINGS!!*



They didn’t cheap out on them at all, did they? They just look professionally done with the boney/spiney bits and the texturing on the skin. I’ll have to wait for a better shot of him to comment on the rest of his look.

I wanted to see how they compared with Taker’s Survivor Series ’96 wings and… well:



Taker descending was a cool visual, but it’s pretty clear to see who put the most time into their project.
It’s “I’ve studied actual real dragons” vs “I think I saw a bat once.”

I’m not sure that Drago was flying anywhere though, he kind of looked like a baby bird leaving the nest before it was ready.

*I originally was going to mention the colour of the LU sign reminding me of The Bull, but decided against it. Then the wings appeared and put the red bull connection straight back in my head.

Los Rayobacks don’t remind me of anything this week, way to ruin the gimmick, guys!

To the commentary desk and Vampiro interrupts Striker’s rundown to apologise to him and the fans for letting his emotions get the better of him last week and jumping in the ring.
I have to say good job from Vamp here, he’s subdued and not his usual full of energy self.

Dario in the ring. He announces that eight weeks from now (so, the season finale) there will be an event so big that no one will ever forget it. He says, while reminding us how brilliant he is, that it will be known as Ultima Lucha. Tonight, they will determine who will be fighting for the LU title at Ultima Lucha.

He’s invited all those that have competed against Puma for the title before: Hernandez, Cuerno, Cage, Fenix… but since Mil sent Fenix to an early grave, it’ll be a three way instead. Winner gets the title shot.

Dario introduces Blue Demon Jr (who was in the recaps getting beaten up by Chavo) thankfully, he’s not dressed to wrestle. Yet.

Dario welcomes BD, but and says that he knows he’ll want to be part of UL, but has to check he’s not got any ring rust and has organised a match for him (what an evil heel Dario is) against… Chavo (with The Crew). The match is happening right now (so much for that not being dressed to wrestle idea) and this time, anything goes!

Anything goes: Chavo w/The Crew vs Blue Demon Jr

I’m sure that Demon being in a suit will do wonders for his skills… oh, nope there’s a terrible looking slow bump from a kick to start us off.

Even the goons are doing well against him.

There’s something about BD matches, even the camerawork seems a little iffy right now compared to how it usually is.

Somebody has to be coming out to help soon. Sexy Star is out for a couple of weeks, so I don't know who else there is.

I guess there's nobody else, as a it's a nice double stomp into a DDT by the goons and Chavo follows up with a frog splash for the easy win.

Chavo talking to a caged Black Lotus and tells her that business is business. She tells him that after he betrayed Aztec Dragon, he’ll make sure that Mexico will find him. Chavo replies that after what he did to BD, they won’t have the balls.

Dario in the LU bathrooms. You’d think he’d have his own private executive bathroom. He’s looking in the mirror, glances down, is it going to be a jump scare? No, Drago slowly fades in instead.



Drago points out that he qualifies to be in the no1 contender match since he faced Puma for the title. Dario puts him in the match, but if he doesn’t win, not only will he still be banished, he’ll have to leave his mask behind as well.
That’s an interesting one, with it not being a singles match.

Disciples of Death (AKA Skull Mask Gang) w/Catrina vs Mascarita Sagrada, Bengala, Pimpinela Escarlata.

Wow, Catrina.



Barrio Negro, Trece, and El Siniestro de la Muerte are the names that I’m not going to be learning any time soon. They will either be known as:
Barry, Tracey, and Sinestro or
Purple Skull, Gold Skull, and White Skull.

Mascarita and Pimpi have both been gone since episode 15, Bengala is making his LU debut.

Striker brings up a point just as I noticed it: one team dressed in black representing death, the other all in white representing life, or are at least full of life and energy.

After Pimpi dives onto a person in the crowd, Bengala gets the tag and Vamp starts with the cat puns.

Tracey = purple
Sinestro = white
Barry = gold
I think that’s right.

Ha, how I’ve missed Sagrada doing his flippy stuff then getting kicked in the face.

While Sagrada is getting beaten up in the ring, his teammates are getting taken out on the outside.

Pimpi gets the lick of death from Catrina before the DoD finish it and get the pin in a way I’ve not seen before. It conjures up images of waking up in the middle of the night with a demon perched on your chest sucking the life out of you.



Ok, The SMG can stick around, that was much more fun than I was expecting. You had the comedy spots early on, then they got to show that they are actually a threat.

Mr Mundo visits Dario in his office complaining about not being in the no1 contender match tonight. Dario explains that he’s not in it because he expects Mundo to be champ at Ultima Lucha.
After seeing what he did to Bertie, Dario now considers Mundo to be the future of LU, and gets to prove that he’s better than Puma next week in a concept never seen before. He then describes what sounds suspiciously like an iron man match.

No1 Contender’s spot: Cage vs King Cuerno vs Hernandez vs Drago



Simple but effective, combining Cuerno standing staring at his opponents while commentary talks about how cerebral and analytical he is.

Drago makes his entrance, Cage is a bit unsure, Cuerno moves to get a closer look, Hernandez… smirks and shakes his finger. He's not helping me like him any more.



No reason for that pic apart from once again saying how great Drago’s look is.

The match hasn’t really got going yet, there’s no real flow to things.

Cage was going to be a professional skateboarder apparently.

Before you look at the next picture, imagine Cage and Cuerno doing a powerbomb into a backstabber combo.

Got that image the wrong way round in your head, didn’t you?

Hernandez had a bit of success and strung some moves together, so he decided to celebrate.



The others just ignored him and carried on doing their thing on the other side of the ring.

You can see Cuerno just standing at ringside watching Hernandez and Drago in the ring. It doesn’t come off as him waiting for his spot, but him being smart and picking his moment.



Killshot shows up for an unexpected twist. He’s had a bit of interaction with Cuerno and Cage (trios tourney, First Medallion match) but nothing to make anybody an obvious target.

Cage should not be able to do some of the stuff that he does, I believe the skateboarder comment.

Cuerno spots Killshot, so that looks like where we’re going with him.

Poison Mist by Drago (sounds like a perfume), yep that fits with the whole Dragon motif and is easier to pull off than breathing fire.
Drago then does his super complicated rollup on a blinded Cuerno (yet again) for the win!

Here comes Puma, who the crowd boo a bit, They pose with the title held up for a bit and Striker says goodnight.

Dario is the boss and doesn’t have to do what Striker says, so we’re getting some more.
He’s peering out from behind his blinds when he’s tapped on the back by, I presume, the sexy ghost again. He turns around to see…. Nothing! When he turns back to his window and then back around for a second time, Catrina is in his chair.

She tells him that he made a mistake not putting Mil Muertes in that match. Dario says that he’s never faced Puma for the title, Catrina replies that that is why he is still champion.
As Dario tries to walk away, he gets to be choked by Catrina, who reminds him that Mil destroys everything that gets in his way, and asks why Dario is in his way?



Dario gives Mil a match in two weeks against Drago with the winner facing the champ at Ultima Lucha in order to get released.

Catrina mentioning that the monster that he hides in the cell is no match for Mil gets a reaction from Dario.



Post Episode Thoughts/Questions

- My Word document, which is slightly different from the final posted version, is approaching 50k words and is at 100+ pages.
- Are the Skull Mask Gang hanging around long enough for me to put effort into remembering which is which?
- Thinking on it, Drago was on Triplemania the other week and still had his mask, which should have been a clue as to whether he was winning or not.
- Next week is going to be an interesting one. I have no doubt that Mundo and Puma can have a match for that long, but the presentation side of it is tricky. Do you just have the match and cut out all the stuff that LU is known for just for that episode, or maybe you have short breaks between falls where they can do that stuff. I’m not the biggest fan of iron man matches anyway, so we’ll see how it goes.

I do not think it is hyperbole to say that in the last decade of wrestling Drago has had the coolest f***ing look of any wrestler anywhere and like you pointed out clearly money was well spent and I love he doesn't have just one variation of a multitude in different colors , shades etc.

Oh and something that sadly cannot be heard on the show clearly and I have not been able to find a clear version of anywhere but you make it out is Dragos absoloute metal as f*** theme song just this beat that goes hard as hell and I love it.

Staying on the subject of Drago...bet you are wondering why if Drago was going to return in a later episode did they banish him in the first place? well glad you did not ask because ima tell you a tale a...Dragons tale (HA I MADE AN UNFUNNY HAHAHA) well Drago the character was not suppose to return he was suppose to be El Dragon Azteca only going forward but the crowd loved Drago so much the bosses doing like I said they do listening to their audience changed course to bring him back , so if the return felt a bit weird that is why but they found a way to finagle ongoing things and made a loop hole that makes sense to bring him back.

Oh look Blue Demon is back...y...no f*** that guy lol.

Next week though we go ALL NIGHT LONG!! f*** YES!...read that in the context that you want lol but I will let you know ahead of time there are no vingettes for next week it is straight up one match all the way through this is of course assuming you have not already watched it by the time you posted ep 31 , but there is more than enough to talk about....alot of shows can't do a singular match without it feeling like it overstays its welcome or gets boring.....naw not here not in the temple it it is gas peddle from go and it never lets up and if you liked Johnny Mundo so far....you will love him coming out of this IMO this was the match that began to change peoples views on Johnny from being a solid good to great working to being....holy shit I had no idea he could be THIS great and it is only the first steps in what I have been saying is the best work of the mans entire career.

Dario is amazing taking credit for inventing things...that were already mainstays in wrestling lol the man is a genius who could deny him his rightful credibility all ideas were El Jefes and I shall hearith no argument to the contrary lol.

When we speak of Bengala we must address this fat cat properly...THE MIGHTY! Bengala

10 outta 10 episode for Catrina...any Catrina is 10 out of 10 I mean what a lovely woman.

Again beautiful masterful character and camera work here...I love how you can see Darios reaction but it is not the most important thing untill Catrina finishes saying what she says and then Dario comes into focus as the camera pans to him and then the seemless shot from his reaction to his next immediate reaction and turning in his chair ...f*** I love everything about this and really keeps showing how badly shot other wrestling is IMO.

Oh and something else it is not an obvious thing but just keep in mind the way Dario's office looks right now as it is not so much a storyline plot but just how things improve over the course of the show as there is alot of empty space in Dario's office right now.

Oh and KillShot I see you sir...idk if it was his idea or someone in the back.



But there is a definet similarity in that shot of him.

Episode 32 – All Night Long

To raise the roof and have some fun♪

Recaps of:
1) Alberto’s arrival and conflict with Mundo, leading to the Janetty moment, which led to tonight’s contest.

Los Rayobacks this week are doing a great impression of a completely different band.



It's amazing how many of these bands have a uniform wearing accordion player.

I think I might have started something with all the discussion about what type of sexy entity Catrina is, Vamp introduced Striker as his “sexy partner”.

All Night Long – LU Title: Johnny Mundo vs Prince Puma(c)

And… here we go, I guess. Squeezing out that extra minute or two by not having entrances and just doing ring introductions. With what I know already, I’m guessing Mundo wins the title here but with there being only one fall in it.

I think that I like that there’s no actual clock, the only thing telling me how long we’ve got to go is the video overlay whenever I pause to type (so I’ll try not to bring up the timebar).

Some actual wrestling to start us off. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they started slow. They’re not going all out, but they’re not taking it easy either.

Oh, there is a clock. 33 minutes to go, 0-0. 

Correction, make that 1-0 to Puma as he pins Mundo with an athletic rollup. Vamp says it was a quick count.

Interesting choice giving Puma the advantage to start. I can't see that lasting too long.

1-1! Mundo went for End of the World, Puma grabbed his leg, Mundo packaged him up and pinned him while holding the ropes… well, when I say holding the ropes:



Vamp sees nothing wrong with that. whereas the ref just sees nothing.

Mundo is outside the ring and wants a break, but is told that there’s no timeouts in wrestling.
We come back from the adverts as Mundo is just getting back in the ring and Vamp mentions that he is so happy that he cheated.

Puma’s left arm is a major focus for the attacks of Mundo.



I thought Mundo slipped there, but the more I look at it, the more I don’t think that’s the case.



Mundo tries crawling under the ring and when Puma drags him back out, he brings with him a box and a chair.

So much for the box. It explodes (not an actual explosion, LU isn’t that type of wrestling… yet?) as Mundo lands on it.

Mundo retaliates by smacking Puma with a crowbar (not the wrestler). Ooh, then there’s a sickening thump as it connects with Puma’s skull.

As Striker has mentioned, and if anybody hasn’t worked it out yet, there’s no countouts and no DQ.

Puma 1-2 Mundo. It’s an easy pin for Mundo, as it should be. Vamp is screaming for Mundo to cover him again. When did he get so smart?

Puma 1-3 Mundo. Moonlight Drive for another easy point for the challenger.



The actions of the last few minutes means that that picture isn’t showing a smiling face who’s risen to a challenge, but a smarmy, cheating heel who is thinking how great they are.

Rebound springboard kick by Mundo ended up looking really viscous despite him being a bit wobbly on the ropes. Follow up with The End of the World…

Puma 1-4 Mundo.

Mundo is so confident that he takes time to grab a drink… and ends up smashing Puma in the face with the bottle.

To put it in gaming terms: Mundo’s all green, Puma’s all red, and at this point you realise that you set the difficulty too low.

It’s probably been a couple of minutes since anything has really actually happened, but I didn’t even notice. If you can take a break and not lose the crowd, that’s an indication that things are going well.

Time for a Puma fight back. It doesn’t last long thanks to a Mundo neckbreaker through the ropes onto the ring apron.



Puma might actually be dead at this point. Let’s go for an ad break while they resuscitate him.

20 minutes to go and Puma is still looking pretty lifeless. And now the ladders are coming out. Correction: The large ladders are coming out.



That made a great/awful sound.

There’s a voice that is audible every so often and it’s a bit odd. They’re the one that said there’s no timeouts in wrestling, they also told Mundo he went to the well once too often, and now had a go at him because “that’s a person”. I’m assuming it’s an extra loud fan and not the ref.

Mundo! *shove* Get the table!
He sets up a couple in the entrance, in close proximity to easily climbable stuff.

Maybe not the best time to pose?



I know he’s not actually posing yet in that shot, but that’s what he was doing. It does make me ask the question: Why bother with the ladder? You could have gone up through the crowd. Even better, just a bit later, the ref goes to check on Mundo by running up a set of stairs at the back.

Puma! *shove* Grab another couple of tables!
Puma tries for the suplex off and into the tables, but Mundo blocks and hits a superkick causing Puma to fall down to the floor, missing the tables.
Mundo rides the ladder over to have a word with the band.



I do hope they do the table spot from here, doing it from the previous position would have been a little underwhelming.

Cutting a promo mid-match = heel move. There’s 13 minutes to go as Mundo gets the band to play a tune.

Puma hits Mundo with a Mexican guitar. It was painted red, white and green, and was full of white powder.

With no more build up, we get the big spot



You’d never get that camera angle used anywhere else. Maybe in replays, but not as the live shot. it looked great, and somehow seemed more ...real and less staged?
I think that the angle probably emphasises the height of the fall due to how much the camera had to move compared to filming from a high angle or from the 'front'. (Hey, I came here to watch a wrestling show, not get tricked into trying to learn cinematography!)
After the break, we get replays from all angles, yeah they made the right choice with the live shot.

Puma’s got 11 minutes to get himself and Mundo back to the ring and pick up three wins.

Puma 2-4 Mundo. Puma eventually drags Mundo back into the ring and pins him.

Puma 3-4 Mundo. A bit more just hitting each other before Puma gets the driver to pick up another win.

Just as I was thinking, “why doesn’t Mundo just run away?”, he scoots out the ring and then takes a jog around it when Puma eventually follows him. Mundo wanders back up the main steps and gets runover by… Bertie! Under 5 minutes left as Bertie beats up Mundo around ringside and throws him back in.

Puma 4-4 Mundo – Springboard 450 for Puma levels it up with 4:25 to go.

While they recover, Bertie has a go on the mic. Him and Mundo aren’t even, and he’s coming for the title whoever wins. But you already knew that.

It’s time for the ref to get a workout as we’ve reached the “both are desperate for a pin” stage of the match.



One minute on the clock as Puma escapes the top rope hurricanrana attempt and Mundo crashes to the mat.

Puma hits the 630 and pins Mundo to take a 5-4 lead with just a few seconds remaining. That’s this one done, the champ retains.

Wow, that… was great. That type of match is a tricky thing to pull off, but they more than managed to do it and keep me entertained throughout. Well done to both of them.
There was no real downtime in the match, no blatant rest spots, there was always some other distraction going on (Mundo getting a drink, chatting with the band) instead of them just slapping on a headlock or something.

Puma might be dead again, nope the belt revived him. Nothing else to go here, the show’s over. Seriously, it’s done, they weren’t kidding about it being the whole show.


Post/Mid Episode & General Thoughts/Questions

- I always thought a fun thing to do with Iron man matches would be to introduce a random stipulation after every fall.
- I can’t remember who did it (HHH?) but in one match somebody just destroyed their opponent with a chair. They took a DQ loss, but it meant they could get a couple of pins and so came out with a gain. (pretty much what the crowbar bit was, minus the DQ)
- LU sure has a knack with gimmick matches, eh? The next challenge for them is to have a fun lumberjack (luchajack?) match.

But when even in loss IMO this is Mundos match and his real turning point because for as great as Puma is...it is Mundos overall character work here that steals the show and he is not even at peak prick yet but this match is a clear showcase of what is to come from him.

Yeah, when people say Lucha Underground revitalized Johnny's career and showed he can absolutely carry the show as a top guy, this is the match they point to. It's just sad he went back to WWE only to repeat an angle he already did 10 years ago.

Just to add onto the love of this match is something a bit more minor but I think it just a great little detail is when they they fall through the table.

Because most of the time when a wrestler goes through a table it either very safely just breaks in half or collapses inward but not here because when they fall the table pretty much explodes and they look absoloutley mangled and it is minor in the grand scheme it does so much to make that fall even crazier where as if the tables just broke in a nice safe heap the affect probably isn't as strong.

Episode 33 – Death vs the Dragon

3) Catrina getting Mil a match against Drago from Dario. They included her comments about the monster he’s hiding in the cell not being a match for Mil. Hmmmm.

Los Rayobacks are back again. They are kind of catchy.

Adding a bit more to Ultima Lucha’s card, commentary announce that Mundo vs Bertie will be taking place there.

Vampiro sit down interview with Super Fly before we get going with the first match.
Vamp asks the obvious, why go after the person that took your mask over the person that broke your arm?
SF says he doesn’t need to explain himself… then does anyway. Star stole something from him so he wanted to steal something from her and for her to feel the same pain he did, but unfortunately, Vamp jumped in the ring.



Normally, that’d be a slightly guilty, 'am I getting attacked?' type look, but knowing what it lead to for Vamp, who knows what he’s thinking.

Vamp points out that Star beat him fairly, SF says that Star could have walked away from the match, and the Temple, and none of this would have happened. Dario has given him another match with Star and he instructs Vamp to not interfere this time. He made the mistake of going easy on her last time because she’s a woman, it won’t happen again and tonight he’ll put her in her place. SF was rubbing his broken arm through the interview.

Sexy Star vs Super Fly



Shiny, but not as fancy as Drago’s wings.

The whole SF attacking Star thing, it kind of got overshadowed by the Vampiro thing.

Is Star somehow getting worse? She took a Blue Demon level bump from a back elbow.

Oh no, it got worse.



It’s like she was going to reverse an Irish whip, started turning the wrong way, realised and then carried on running. She ends with a bump that, compared to the previous one, is fantastic.



Now THAT is how you get thrown over the top rope. He even landed on his feet (his poor knees).

Star follows up by jumping off the top turnbuckle… and slips. Thankfully, SF managed to catch her. Commentary calls it 'unorthodox and dangerous' .
Another jump from the top and she just about reaches SF and it ends up as an armdrag.
Commentary: “so dangerous”. I get the feeling that was more honest than commentary usually is.

A (gentle) double powerbomb gets the win for Super Fly.

The match was… kind of entertaining for the wrong reasons. Go have a watch and see for yourself.

Super Fly attacks Sexy Star after the match is over and goes for her mask for a while before giving up and just throwing her out the ring… where she does a comedy stumble up the aisle to collapse against a person in the crowd.

5 4 way for an Aztec Medallion: Pentagon Jr vs Aerostar vs Marty the Moth vs Cage vs The Mack

As a reminder, Fenix won the first Medallion, and Jack Evans got the second.

Melissas Santos still not a fan of Penta going by the introduction. Probably justified as Penta grabs the mic and chases her out the ring.
Penta says, he’s not interested in winning a simple gold medallion for his master and wants something more valuable. So that everybody can see that he is ready, he’s prepared, and why he’s the only luchador who has zero fear!
He tells his master that he wants to destroy the man who took away his greatest sacrifice, Vampiro!

He invites Vamp to get in the ring, but Vamp isn’t moving, so Penta goes out to him instead. Vamp tries to walk away and Penta grabs him by the front of his shirt. Vamp pushes Penta off of him and looks like he’s getting ready to fight before the ref interjects and Penta just leaves.

After the break, things have calmed down a bit, the match is ready to start (minus a Penta), and Striker talks while Vamp tries to collect himself.



Surprisingly, Aerostar is the one who takes advantage here and tries a rollup on Marty.

Vamp gets back to work after a couple of minutes and apologises to everybody again. Vamp says that using his experience in security and profiling people, Marty has all the makings of a weird stalker type.

I honestly was expecting a fake out when Marty went for his dive over the top, he looked like he was taking a leisurely jog, but still managed to pull it off.

Who is that in the background? I would say it’s too obvious for it to be random or a mistake that was missed.

Apart from a small bit at the start, there’s not been enough Mack in this match so far for my liking.
He does get a bit of a showing, with an exploder suplex to Cage while they were both on the apron and a frog splash to Cage on the outside.

With the two big men down on the outside, Aerostar pins Marty after a hurricanrana and splash.
Was not expecting Aerostar to win that one.

Dario hasn’t put in any appearances tonight so far…

Backstage, the trios champs are training. Ivelisse is punching Havoc while Angelico is doing handstands.
Catrina interrupts them arguing by being her sexy, creepy self and tells them that Death will come to all three of them sooner or later and there’s nothing they can do.



Catrina uses her spooky magic rock powers to summon the Skull Mask Gang from some lightning and they lay out the champs with electric punches before Mil shows up out of nowhere and accompanies her away from the scene.
No, that’s a perfectly sensible sentence, I don’t know why you’re looking confused.

No1 Contender @ Ultima Lucha: Drago vs Mil Muertes w/Catrina

Drago enters first, and before Mil joins him, Hernandez jumps in the ring and attacks! He whips Drago with his belt and then chokes the dragon man.

Interesting that they were both exiled for a while and then came back with a darker outfit and attitude.

Classic speed vs strength contest here.

Huge spear from Mil gets a “Get the coffin!” chant.



Imagine getting a reserved seat and then having to stand for a bunch of the show cause that whole section got destroyed



Drago has been taking most of the punishment in this match, including a powerbomb onto the commentary desk. He fights back with a diving DDT from the top and tries his fancy rollup, but Mil counters it and retakes control of the match.

Mil captures Drago’s arm, looks at him for several seconds before hitting the flatliner and becoming the man to face Puma at Ultima Lucha.

It took me a while to get into this one but it turned out pretty good in the end.

Getting licked by Catrina is pretty great as far as consolation prizes go.

Puma and Konnan show up at the top of the steps. As the credits roll, Puma starts to make his way down them only for Konnan to halt him.

Post Episode & General Thoughts/Questions
- Episode 38 surely has to be called ‘Penultima Lucha’? If not, then it should be.
- Sexy Star is officially joining the very short list of people I’d be quite happy not seeing any more of. To be honest, before now it wasn’t even a list, it was just Blue Demon on his own.
- The Penta/Vamp thing is interesting. I’m sticking with my ‘Vamp(‘s dark side) is the master’ theory.
- The medallion winners: Fenix, Evans, Aerostar. All extra flippy wrestlers, have to keep an eye on that and see if the pattern continues since it might indicate where it’s all heading. They’ve got time to hand them all out before UL, so it might be something happening there.
- No Dario in that episode apart from the recap, which is a rare occurrence.
- That almost felt like a cooldown episode (not that I didn’t enjoy it). Yeah, we sorted out the number one contender, but there wasn’t a huge over the top match or earth shattering development that has been the trend in recent episodes.

But yea big things happening in this episode even though it a sort of bizzare filler episode after just going insane the last few episodes.

One of the strange things is why bother giving SuperFly back his heat or just doing this at all this close to ultima lucha. Just a strange choice IMO.

Drago Nunchucks on the roof nothing else to really add...Skip Chaisson I love you this was an amazing shot one of many many many many more to come with this show.

I loved the Pentagon promo because it sounded like a shoot promo but he wasn't being obnoxiously shooty but saying in short he does not give a shit about medallions but wants his moment back that was taken from him....and Pentagon promos in spanish are f***ing GOD TIER which is why I cannot f***ing ever get onboard with AEW giving him a f***ing translator comedic or not I hate that because listen to him here he is so gawd damn threatening here and it just elevates whatever he is doing with that gravley cadence and anger in his voice as he cuts a promo in spanish and this promo is the real start of Pentagon turning the preverbial corner from...oh he is great , he is over into this is megastar in the making , saw it really start with Mundo last week and this week begins with Pentagon leveling up.

And credit where it likely is never to be given enough...Vamp is really f***ing good at portraying a guy clearly not right mentally his reactions here were great.

The 4 way was great and not just because they are 4 of the most beloved in all of LU by every believer but this match was just an awesome showcase...notice a theme with what I am talking about with guys turning a preverbial corner....well here we go with this one...everyone in this match starts leveling up but it is Marty who steals the f***ing show here even though he is at this point suppose to be a complete comedy act but from his dive onward things start to change for the better for him....this is match specifically is a showcase of the FUTURE of Lucha Underground....and if you loved this ohhh strap in tight.

CATRINA 10 OUTTA 10 EPISODE!!

Idk how she does but Ive is training in full make up lol

And can I say I hope whoever set up the dolly tracking shot on Catrina as she walked in...got like 10 bonus pay days thank you very much lol amazing work Skip ,EVW whoever made the choice just wonderful....I mean where was I going with this again....oh yea cinematography.

And this entire scene goes back to something I spoke about with Catrina and all of this is her but in how sultry and seductive Catrina is WITHOUT being slutty and it is something that wrestling gets wrong ALOT especially under Vince where you can tell he is forcing such this on his female performers , Catrina/Karlee is playing it just enough where you believe she can entrance a woman also again without crossing over and just making the character a slut and it is so much why I love Karlee in this role because the woman can gawd damn act and she knows exactly what she wants the character to be and perform.


And look at me fawnibg over the camera work...I love how they tightened the shot to make sure that it was only them you saw and to emphasis Catrinas power and alure.

All in all not an exceptional but still a good solid episode of LU.

Gecko I read all your posts in a day. This is the single greatest wrestling show ever. It's in my top 10 TV shows of all time and yeah the final season is extremely disappointing compared to the near perfect first 3 but that doesn't detract from the quality of the first 3 seasons.

Problem is this show has ruined all other forms of wrestling for me now though.

Episode 34 – Gold and Guerreros

I see Tubi have updated their video player since last episode. Still got the skip forward/back buttons set to 30 seconds which is slightly annoying and they’ve not fixed the issue with random old subtitles showing up if you skip about after having them on previously.

Dario, counting some money in his office, welcomes the “man who killed the legend of Blue Demon”, Chavo, who is after the last part of their bargain.
The episode title is a bit of a clue, he wants a title match against Puma. Dario grants it, tonight it's Chavo vs Puma for the title, No DQ, and if Konnan gets involved the title goes to Chavo automatically.

Mexican Dubweiser play us in to the Temple. Vampiro is in his prison outfit and seemingly back to his usual excited self (at least until Penta shows up again).

Delavar Daivari w/Big Ryck vs Texano

How do you know that Daivari is rich? Because he can waste a perfectly good drink by throwing it into the crowd. This did generate, unless I was hearing things, a “Gol-den Sho-wer” chant to mock his nickname.

Commentary pushing the story of how different these two are, one got handed everything and the other had to fight for it.

Ryck earning his pay by first standing still and letting Daivari hide behind him, and then grabbing Texano’s foot.

Commentary genuinely sound like they’re enjoying themselves.

Ryck grabs Texano’s rope and wraps it round his fist. He eats a superkick after missing his punch. Eye patch = zero depth perception.

Texano hits a nice sitout powerbomb to win



This match is pretty much what I was expecting: Not good enough or bad enough to be memorable. Solid but forgettable.

Konnan backstage with Puma, giving the champ a pep talk while he (Puma, not Konnan) works out.
Flickering lights signal the arrival of Catrina. She’s there to give Puma a reminder of what he’s up against if he beats Chavo.
And here he comes for a staredown.




I’m pretty sure having those eyes is cheating under official staredown rules.
More flickering lights causes the spooky pair to disappear. Konnan tells Puma it’s all mind games and not to let her get in his head.
A) For some (you know who you are), it’s already too late, she’s set up home and has a mortgage in your head
B) How is being able to do that sort of stuff mindgames, Konnan?

Konnan talking to somebody who is conveniently out of shot. Mexico. He knows that he’s been wanting to get his hands on Chavo ever since he disrespected their country and for what he and the crew did to Blue Demon. Mexico. Konnan knows that Chavo will have another trick up his sleeve and this is his counter to that. Mexico. So, Mexico is going to get Chavo during his match, is what I’m getting from this.

That’s a different shot than normal. It must mean something! I’ll have to study it closely to see if I spot any clues. 

Hernandez vs Drago



I know I praise it every single time, but it deserves it. Very few things in wrestling can match up to that look.
Also: Look, a red light that is only focused on what it needs to be and isn’t so overpowering that you can’t see any details.

Vampiro saying that Hernandez is keeping up with Drago: eh…
Vampiro wanting Striker to name one of the 20 major titles that Hernandez has won: Ha!

OK, Hernandez, you’ve got your smirk, strut and finger shake, that's fine as a heelish mannerism, but don’t continue to do them all the way through the entire match.

Border toss onto the corner of the ring apron, and then Hernandez grabs a ‘fan’ and steals his belt. Vamp calls it prison love. Then the whipping begins. Then there’s some choking and we end with a DQ.

My gimmick-match sense is tingling.



He was there last week and I half convinced myself it was Carlito.

After he gets bored of choking Drago, Hernandez grabs a mic and tells the dumbass fans that dragons are not real. Drago is just a man (you are now imagining Regal’s song with Drago playing that part). Then he challenges the fans to get in the ring if they don’t like what he did.

Chavo is getting ready for his match and gets a visit from Catrina and Mil. He is also informed about his future destruction if he is champ at Ultima Lucha. Chavo takes it in his stride, says he’ll see them there and walks away while Mil growls.

Marty ‘The Moth’ Martinez vs Alberto El Patron

Early prediction: This one’s ending soon when Mundo runs in to attack Bertie.

A very aggressive Bertie goes on the attack as soon as the bell rings. He locks in the armbreaker quickly and Marty taps out. Oh.
I was right on the ending soon part at least, it only lasted about one minute. I’m sure Marty will get a win at some point.

Bertie has time to cut a promo thanks to his quick win. He wants to thank Mundo. Mundo putting Bertie through the window woke up the evil part of Alberto El Patron, and it’s the evil part that is coming for Mundo.

A video hyping up the title match, and you can tell Vampiro is reading a script for his voiceover.

No DQ – LU Title: Chavo Guerrero w/The Crew vs Prince Puma(c) w/Konnan

Vamp asks where Bael is since he’s been missing for weeks. Well, there’s some of him over there, some of him over there, a bit of him on the ceiling… I’m betting some of him even ended up in the sewers after working its way through a digestive system.

Melissa announces the Konnan stipulation with a ‘eh, what can you do, the boss makes the rules?’ attitude. Somebody in the crowd: “He’s a madman!”
Let’s all pretend that Chavo has any chance at all of winning this even with everything stacked in his favour.

Quick Guesses for Konnan’s secret mystery person: Chavo classic (who betrays Konnan and joins his son because Guerrero), La Parka (just because), or one of the many, many, many, clowns.

This could be a good one.

Chavo taunting Konnan, trying to get himself hit. Imagine if Konnan forgot the stipulation and took a swing at Chavo.

Oh no, Chavo has injured his leg! Or possibly it’s just a distraction so that the goons can get involved. Chavo is still hopping about the place when they all get back in the ring after fighting outside for a bit, so maybe it is a legit thing.

Camera was on commentary for what seemed like an unusually long time, wonder if they were covering for something?

As The goons hold Puma down, Chavo slowly goes to the top, and Konnan calls for his secret weapon.
Oh, it’s only Texano. It makes sense, I suppose. Unless you’re dragging a secret ally to all the shows, you’re not going to have anybody new handy when this sort of stuff gets sprung on you.

Texano takes out the goons which leaves Puma to hit the 630 and pick up the win.

Chavo is still holding his leg after the match, I’m guessing it’s a legit issue and why the match didn’t go longer.

Texano grabs a mic and tells Chavo that Mexico isn’t coming for him, Mexico is right here!

Chavo, back in the locker room after his loss, gets a visit from a chuckling Blue Demon



The whole wearing a lucha mask while dressed up nicely thing will never cease to amuse me for some reason.

Chavo points out that he’s never heard a crowd cheer for BD like they did for Texano, maybe it’s because he is Mexico, while BD is just some has-been who lives in Miami?
BD throws Chavo around a bit despite saying he’s not the type of person to fight an injured man. He holds Chavo up with one hand while claiming that he IS Mexico! As BD walks away, Chavo smiles to himself.

Now I'm questioning whether it is a legit injury and they took advantage and adapted, or if it was all planned out.

Post Episode & General Thoughts/Questions
- The audio in the Chavo recap at the start reminds me of something but I can’t place it.
- In the category of 'a typo creating a gimmick': Texano gets a dinosaur makeover to become T-rexano
- I’m only just now properly realising that we’re getting an actual season finale that we’re building to. That may seem a strange thing, but it’s just not something that I'm used to in wrestling. Take WWE and Wrestlemania being the end of the ‘season’. You have WM, then the next day you have Raw with a few debuts (if you’re lucky) and everything just carries on the same.
- Putting aside the Penta stuff as a separate thing (which he is also impressing me with. He's surprisingly subtle), Vamp has really grown on me on commentary. He may not be the best, but he sounds invested in what’s going on and I think he complements Striker well.
- Another low key / set up episode. I don't know whether it'll start ramping up again in the next couple of episodes or if they're saving it all for UL, either way, there's not too long to go now.

Notice a running theme with the show atleast in S1 is that most of the filler involves Chavo...yea the benefits of being an agent on the show in full with Chavito lol.

If it was not obvious upon first watch definetly go back to watch the Puma Vingette because Konnan IS HIGH AS f***! lol but this is because Konnan at this point in time had so many issues and in pain all the time and so he was just blazing up all time and being miserable to everyone....ya know before weed was legalized so yea.

And you know how high Konnan is because his response to someone TELEPORTING IN FRONT OF YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME IS....it is all headgames lol

And yea unfortunate for Chavo here legit his knee going out when Puma during the match rolls off his back and then you can see Marty Elias very clearly callin for The Crew to get to the ring once he knew it was legit but also resulted in alot of dead air when they taped it from what I hear but they did a fantastic job editing it together though...I do not put this on LU it was just a really bad circumstance sadly.

Texano is in a weird place right now in this season because Dorian would only allow his guys to be booked certain ways and sadly Texanos booking here is exempliary of thta...Lucky for Texnao it changes for the better but right now this is a political thing behind the scenes and as Bertie and Texano were feuding in Mexico that Bertie was the priority over Texano again this was because of Dorian.

All in all another lowkey filler episode...but and I would have to go and check but that should be it for filler episodes from here on out they ramp it right back up.
