Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. The gifs are a little off in this one, I think I forgot to change the frame rate.
Episode 28 – Shoots and LaddersInteresting episode title. The ladder part is obvious, wonder where the shoot comes in.
Recaps of:
1) Marty the Moth wanting a job
2) Hernandez turning on Puma
3) Daivari & Texano
4) Trios titles, the goons and what awaits them if they disappoint Dario again. Here we go, into the Temple with maracas man band and commentary welcoming us.
Marty ‘The Moth’ Martinez vs Prince Puma w/KonnanPoor Melissa, she was a true professional to get through that without… well, to just get through that.
This is legit making me a bit uncomfortable. One second he seems like a happy friendly guy, the next he’s just creepy. I actually had a quick look at Wikipedia (and accidentally spoiled that he’s the champ at some point 🤦♂️) to check that there isn’t a ‘controversy/allegations’ section.
I don’t think this one is getting a clean finish, Hernandez is probably lurking about somewhere.
I see the Trios titles are already hanging above the ring.
See a detail in the background, get your memory jogged about what happened last week without needing a recap.
Yeah, Marty was putting on a nice guy act. He shakes hands with Puma and wants a photo with him, but as soon as Puma’s attention shifts, his expression changes and he attacks.
Konnan has been noticeably more vocal at ringside than in the past.
Puma eventually regains control and wins with the 630.
Solid enough in ring stuff from Marty, but the character work is the more intriguing aspect here.
-----------
Sudden thought. Marty went from asking for a job (and being told no), to interfering in a match and now having a match. Unless I completely zoned out and missed it, we seem to have skipped some sort of segment with Dario changing his mind, which leads me to wonder: Is Marty supposed to be there right now? Is Dario so distracted by something that Marty can sneak in and pretend to have been hired? Or is there a boring, mundane reason?
Ah, Striker says Dario gave Marty a chance thanks to his persistence.
Why’s that camera man so focused on filming the stairs? Answer: because Hernandez is at the top of them.
Konnan insults him a bit and invites him to get in the ring so that Puma can take care of him. Konnan takes a couple of steps back… and doesn’t hit Puma with his cane. I’m telling you, it’s definitely happening sometime.
Hernandez thinks nah, I’ll do it on my terms, and leaves.
Sit down interview with Vampiro and Johnny Mundo
Vamp goes for the big question first, why did Mundo throw Alberto through the window?
Mundo says he came to the Temple to show he was the best in the world, there’s a lot of talented people here but none are quite as good as him.
Vamp tries to get an answer to his question again and Mundo says that he’s known Alberto a long time and he did it to make a statement.
Vamp now gets rid of his notes and suggests that maybe Mundo is feeling like he’s getting overlooked again, that Alberto came in and stole his limelight?
Vamp the psychologist has cracked it. Mundo says that he was there from day one and Alberto just strolled in. He is overconfident, overpaid, and overrated. Mundo is not thinking of Alberto anymore, he’s done. Alberto forced his hand, maybe he thought Mundo was just some dude in catering that he could slap around… and there’s there shoot portion of the episode title.
Mundo finishes by saying that he is the biggest star here and this is his world… but you already knew that *wink*
Into the office (with the bull) and Dario is telling whoever he is with that in order to appease the gods, the Aztecs used to make human sacrifices. He describes how they used to cut out the heart then throw the victim down the temple steps. The Crew, who he is speaking to, have a similar opportunity tonight. He reiterates that they
really don’t want to lose again.
How often can you tell who is in the next match by their shadow?
Delavar Daivari vs TexanoRight, let’s see if this one lasts longer than last time.
It does, but that might not be a good thing.
There’s an edit that is obvious mainly due to the audio.
Daivari working on the arm.
This match really feels like they’re putting in the minimum amount of effort.
There’s Big Ryck, he attacks the cowboy to cause the DQ.
That was not a good match, which is notable just for the rarity of that happening in this series.
------------------------
Hang on a minute. Ryck… Where’s The New Crew? Did you dump them already for Daivari?
Post beatdown, Ryck forces the ref to count a pinfall while Daivari reclines on Texano and finishes his drink.
Loud booing throughout this, and some “you sold out” chants despite Ryck making it clear that he only works for money. The crowd visuals didn’t look like they matched up, and it just sounded a little unnatural so I’m guessing this was something added in post.
That’s one match a piece, both ending in DQ. We’re getting a no-DQ match next.
Into Dario’s office where he is peering out of one of his remaining windows. A hand taps him on the back of the neck, but when he turns there is nobody there. Dario goes and sits at his desk as the sexy ghost rubs his shoulder and then goes for the key.
Oh, it’s Catrina… To be fair, I don’t know that she’s not a ghost.
She tells Dario that he knew that Mil couldn’t be stopped and if it’s a sacrifice that he wants, Mil will deliver.
Mil wants to end the man that can not die. Dario says ok, Fenix vs Mil Muertes next week and asks if Catrina had anything special in mind? She wants a death match. (confession: it took me too long to remember that death matches are already a thing and not some crazy deal that LU came up with).
She then does a flickering disappearance… which is all I need to make a random thought into a full blown theory.
Catrina IS a ghost. The evidence: spooky disappearing ability, has an obsession with life and death. That’s all I’ve got for now, but I’m sure I’ll build on it.
Black Lotus walking along train tracks carrying her bag. She says (in voiceover) that she doesn’t know where she is, but knows where she must go. She appreciates all that he’s (Aztec Dragon) done for her, but she’s ready to fulfil her destiny: To kill the brother of Dario Cueto. Oh, so she knows that they’re brothers and that's why she turned up at the Temple to begin with.
AD is reading all this in the note that she left when a light from an opening door gets his attention. He looks to the silhouette standing in the doorway
It says: “If you don’t want her to die, you’re going to need my help.” And steps forward to reveal himself to be… Chavo?! That… I mean, yeah, surprising. But Chavo?! The guy who quit in episode *checks notes* 15 when he was attacked by Mil.
And we’re not done here.
Chavo having a drink with AD. He says that Dragon’s tribe, the Cuetos and the Guerreros have a rich history. (A history involving ownership of one of seven Aztec Medallions, perhaps?)
Dragon says that the Guerrero’s are liars (and cheaters and stealers (yes I know it should be cheats and thieves)) Dragon actually says the cheaters part 😊. Chavo says that they’re also familia and his familia is in danger. Dragon has influence in Mexico and can make it stop and in return he’ll protect Lotus.
OOOOOOOH, At first, I was thinking Chavo was related to Lotus, but that’s not it at all. This is going way back and is to do with Chavo beating up Blue Demon and getting told that all of Mexico will be after him.
Dragon agree to clear his debt if he protects her with his life.
Trios Titles Ladder Match: The Crew (Bael, Cortez Castro, Mr Cisco) vs Angelico, Ivelisse, Son of Havoc (c)So this is obviously something of a handicap match, 3 vs 2 (2.5 at best). It has a real 'champs are the underdogs' feel, which the team has kind of had all along.
We’re not waiting for the champs to get in the ring, The Crew run up the steps and the fight starts up there.
They fight back down to the ring, and Angelico and Havoc are doing ok despite the disadvantage.
I shouldn’t find it funny, but Bael just running up and punching Ivelisse in the face amused me for some reason.
Havoc, possibly overcompensating for something, pulls out a huge ladder. The ladders have that Temple aesthetic and are all grimey and grungy.
Mr Cisco whips Angelico to the ropes… and over the ropes arse first into the ladder that the other goons are holding. He redeems himself by hitting a baseball slide dropkick into the ladder that Havoc is holding.
Havoc goes down holding his leg. Ivelisse probably complains that he can’t come up with anything original and has to copy her injury.
Angelico is the first to set up a ladder. That’s not going to be enough unless you stand on top of it, those belts are hung pretty high up.
The goons have Angelico sitting in the corner, they put a ladder between his legs and hit it with a chair. I’m not saying it felt good, but it could have been worse. They then grab a table to complete the set.
It’s Havoc’s turn as he endures a 3 on 1 kicking in the ring while his teammates take it easy outside.
Goons do goon stuff and get beaten up by Havoc on his own.
Havoc, look down. There’s a big circle in the middle of the ring. If the ladder you set up is not on that, it’s in the wrong place.
Angelico gets thrown into one of the boards on Dario’s office which falls off…
And we get to say hi to the boss again. Wonder who he’s on the phone to?
A bunch more ladders and tables have been set up on the outside.
How not to endear yourself to your boss who has previously threatened to sacrifice you:
At least that window was already broken.
Angelico puts Bael on the table and climbs the ladder… and climbs higher…. And higher…. And on to the office roof.
He is stopped from doing something crazy by a kendo stick attack from behind.
Ha, great spot (not sure it’s deserving of a “holy Shit!” chant though):
Vamp: “Flying Sushi roll through the window!”
The Crew finally doing the smart thing and using the numbers advantage. Two on defence while the third goes for the titles… Ivelisse is getting the sneaky win here, isn’t she?
Yet another “how can you not like Havoc” moment as he is tipped off the ladder, but turns it into a second rope springboard moonsault.
Havoc goes up top, fights off Mr Cisco and shoves him down through a table on the outside and hits a shooting star press on Bael on the table. On the table, not through the table, since it didn’t break. He did come up a little short and didn’t land all his weight on the table.
The crowd are getting excited about something…. Oh, I see what it is in the background.
WOW! For me, that’s even more impressive than last time. You’re not getting anybody to catch you and break your fall, your target is smaller and not on the mat, they also can’t make any adjustments in their position to make sure you make contact.
Everybody is down, apart from Ivelisse who makes her move. As she climbs, Angelico holds the ladder steady, and Mr Cisco recovers enough to give chase. She fends him off by biting and slapping his hands long enough to reach up and unhook a belt to win!
------------------
As the champs celebrate atop a ladder, Dario turns away from his window in disgust. Poor, poor, goons.
Another fun one with the exception of the Daivari vs Texano match. Plenty of story advancement as well, all the pieces are starting to come together.
Post Episode Thoughts/Questions- General thought that turned up at a random time (Friday afternoon) and gets inserted into the next episode: It took me a bit to remember if there was any at all, but there’s no real backstage violence. Mundo beating up the Goons, and Puma getting attacked in the locker room are the only two instances that I can come up with without going through my notes. Dario runs a tight ship.
- Marty is a fascinating character. He legit feels like he’s unstable and not in an over the top, "wow, look how crazy I am" way.
- With a whole bunch of the fans wearing masks, in the crowd would be a great place to hide a debuting wrestler.
- Does Ryck count as LU’s Big Show? He came in as a heel, was betrayed to (kinda) turn face, and then is heel again.
- Lotus should have challenged AD one more time, you always succeed on the third attempt with these sorts of things.
- Random ladder match thought: With Trios titles, you could make it so that you have to grab 2/3 belts to win. It could add a bit more story to the matches. Could even make it so that once you grab a belt, you’re out of the match.
- Again, the gimmick match uses the gimmick, but is not built purely focused around the end goal. It was several minutes in before an attempt at climbing the ladder was made, and after that they weren’t constantly going for the titles.
