Very sad. I'll echo what many others here have said and say that while he may not have had the wrestling background and the knowledge that that brings, he more than made up for it with his enthusiasm and energy.

My heart sunk when I saw the news on Facebook. Don was amazing and a highlight of of many a show. He may not have had the technical knowledge of sooner but he more than made up for it in passion. He loved being there and it made you want to be there at times. His calls of the Pounce and Pele kick made those stand out so much more and his awe at the X Division stuff perfectly described what many of us felt seeing that.

Just saw this trending on Twitter. He wasn't really what you'd call a traditionally good commentator but he definitely had a very infectious energy about him that made him lovable anyway. Really sucks to hear.

His enthusiasm is what kept me hooked on the early FS1 days of TNA.
I also have a running joke to this day with a friend about 'GEM MINT 10 FACTORY SET!'

I actively hated his work when he was around until he turned heel, but once I was only watching WWE I realised just how badly wrestling needed some announcers who give you so much enthusiasm that they run out of breath while speaking
I think a generation of TNA wrestlers like AJ and Joe owe some of their overness with a Western more mainstream audience than ROH to Don West screaming an entire lung out of his body whenever they did a high spot
West put over EVERYTHING even if it was garbage. For passion and intent alone an all time great announcer.

Heartbreaking news. The guy had incredible energy and his heel commentary is seriously underrated.

Don West was always a very entertaining announcer. He didn't come from a wrestling background but jumped into being a wrestling announcer feet first and brought an incredible amount of energy to the job. His energy always seemed genuine. I forgot who posted a tribute saying he "could sell snow to a penguin," and I felt that was very accurate. He was great at making every moment seem like a big deal. He could make any event seem like a big deal. His ability to do that is what made him special. RIP Don West

Man commentated on some of the greatest matches of all time and by all accounts was a great person, his heel turn is genuinely one of the most entertaining things I've seen in pro wrestling. Man's chilling in the big hotel bar in the sky.

I know his commentary you either liked it or you didn't but i was a huge fan of his. He just brought with him this big ball of energy. He made so many moments even grander with his reactions. I've always said i would rather listen to someone with passion and energy than some of the other muted announcers over the years and brought that in spades. He complemented Mike Tenay very well.
Such an awful loss to his family. May he rest easy.

*Homicide does a somersault plancha through the ropes them high fives Don West while Don pops for it*
The man was a ball of energy and sold TNA Wrestling as the best wrestling in the world. Not bad for guy who didn't start in wrestling. Funny thing, IIRC, when he turned heel it was reported that he watch tapes of Heenan to see how to be a better heel on the call. Man was willing to learn his craft and that's always a plus.

He had some habits I disliked, like repeating lines people said in promos, but frankly, he was still one of the best guys TNA could have had for establishing an identity of their own. TNA may have not always fulfilled their end of that bargain, but he never half-assed it. He and Tenay were a pretty fun team for the most part.
Gem Mint 10.

West reminded me a lot like David Crockett when I watch old NWA stuff, he was like your dad or uncle watching it on TV and he just happened to be on television. We honestly need more commentators like that, people who are always thrilled to be there even if the show is good or bad. The man was never boring. RIP.

Tenay did the "repeating things said in promos" thing, too. I hated it as well, but I wouldn't be surprised if TNA management told them to do it.
