End of Day 13, and China (34-24-16) are still holding off the United States (29-35-27) in the medal count for most golds, although the US seemingly have the overall total lead locked up. Japan (22-10-14) still lies in third, while Australia (17-5-19) sneak back ahead of “Russia” (16-22-20) and Great Britain (16-18-17) for fourth. Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands round out the top 10, but I will also make a quick mention of New Zealand in 11th (7-6-6), having their best Olympic Games on record. 88 nations are on the board, with the Bahamas, Grenada and, winning their first ever Olympic medal, Burkina Faso, joining in today. Where is that country located at?

Olympic basketball has been kick ass. I love it The NBA could learn a lot from this Olympics. They won't. But they could.

You’re missing a “female” before the last word of your post. She’s not even the most decorated Olympic athlete in her marriage!

That modern pentathlon show jumping part is a disaster. The horses are picked at random and the Irish competitor Natalya coyle was on a horse who was acting the maggot so she dropped from 4th place to 18th. And my heart went out to the German competitor who was gold medal place and because the horse had a mood she was eliminated. She was crying through most of her round because the horse refused to move initially and when he did get going didn’t exert himself. Five years of training and doing great all through and then to be undone by something outside her control.

The same horse did the exact same thing to the athlete who rode him earlier and she was eliminated too. That is the nature of showjumping in the Modern Pentathlon, you draw a horse that’s having a bad day, you’re screwed.

Kate French wins the Modern Pentathlon. GB has medalled in every Olympics (except Rio) since the Modern Pentathlon started as a woman’s event.

I understand that it’s not their own horse but surely to Christ the bare minimum is that a horse should be relied upon to give the person riding some chance. I mean I don’t expect every horse to have a clear round and there were some horses that refused fences and that’s fair enough but for that German competitor, she’d have better off on a donkey. And it was mentioned on the Irish commentary that another horse acted up and was swapped out so it’s clearly within their discretion to swap a horse out who acting the bollocks.

You draw the horse and you have twenty minutes to bond with it. If they changed horses, then it would obviously delay the rest of the day, which in a multi-discipline event, is a no-no. It’s a strange way to do things and it’s not exactly consistent but as they said on the commentary here, it’s a pretty regular situation in Modern Pentathlon. One of the horses was ridden to third place in the event, it also no-scored on the other athlete who rode it. Modern Pentathlon is apparently being massive overhauled for the 2024 Games. Hopefully they’ll make it a bit less “luck of the draw”.

Brazil guranteed to pass their medal total from 2016 when they hosted and also get their highest medal tally ever, although they would need to win 4 of the 5 potential golds left to pass their gold tally from 2016.
They are on 3 behind their total(19) from 2016 but still ahead they have
Gold chances: - Men’s Football/Soccer Final (Brazil vs Spain) - Women’s Volleyball Final (Brazil vs USA) - Women’s Boxing 60kg Final (Brazil vs Ireland) - Men’s Boxing 75kg Final (Brazil vs Ukraine) - Men’s Canoeing C-1 1000m (Isaquias Queiroz in Semifinal today, with strong podium chances)
Bronze chances: - Men’s Volleyball 3rd place Game (Brazil vs Argentina)
In 4 of the 6 events guranteed a medals it's just a case of gold or silver

Canada just won gold in Women's soccer. Good. They've been overshadowed by the US for a long time while having a really good side. They deserve this.

Two days left, and with close to 50 gold medals still left to be handed out, this medal count is still anybody's to win!
(It'll probably be China, maybe the US)
China still leads with the most gold (36-26-17) ahead of the United States, who still leads the most medals overall with nearly 100 of them now (31-36-31). Third is the hosts Japan as they have been for most of these Games (24-11-16), while Great Britain (18-20-20) and "Russia" (17-23-22) get past Australia (17-6-21) into the top five. Italy (10-10-18), Germany (9-11-16), the Netherlands (9-10-12) and France (7-11-9) round out the top 10.
89 nations have won medals, with Lithuania finally getting on the board yesterday with a silver in modern pentathlon.
