I really want this movie to utilize Magic Potatoes like Temple of Doom did.

The last thirty mins of Temple are great, where it goes temple fight - mine fight - mine cart chase - bridge fight. It's better than anything in Skull.
It's just pretty much everything else in Temple that I find mediocre or outright bad (opening song and Short Round aside).
Skull doesn't hit the same heights, but also not the same lows. I find it an easier watch than Temple.
Raiders and Crusade are the easy stand-outs, though. And I'm still fond of all four.

I’ve never understood the dislike for Temple. It’s got a great opening, it’s got a series of frantic set pieces and great chemistry between the three leads.
Crystal Skull felt awkward as soon as Ray Winstone started talking in a mock London accent. He’s already got a Cockney accent, why not let him use HIS REAL VOICE?

Probably because the female lead won't ever stop shrieking for two seconds.

I am cautiously hopeful for this sequel. The first trailer looks great and James Mangold is a very talented filmmaker so I think there is hope for this movie. I would love to see the series end on a higher note then crystal Skull.

I’ve never understood the dislike for Temple. It’s got a great opening, it’s got a series of frantic set pieces and great chemistry between the three leads. Outside of the character of Indy and a little nod to the Cairo swordsman, ToD borrows nothing from Raiders. It is its own thing, while Raiders, Crusade and Skulls all have a very similar outline to how the story plays out. And this new movie will probably follow suit in regards to structure. The best sequels or prequels don't need to rely on anything other than the characters in order to be a good follow up. Putting a bunch of little nods in the movie to play to the fanbase will always be scummy in my eyes.

I remember Temple of Doom being the only one that was always sold out at McDonalds when they did their cross promotion in 1991. Buy a larger sandwich and get one of the Indy films on VHS for $5.99. I could never find it.

Amrish Puri looked like he was so much fun as Mola Ram that it makes up for most of Temple’s issues for me.

It's mind blowing that I'm 31 and will have seen Harrison Ford play Han Solo and Indiana Jones in new films.

Aside from the casual racism that hasn’t aged well with the benefit of 39 years of cultural enlightenment, I’m a weirdo who likes Temple of Doom the most. I adore the Indy/Short Round dynamic and feel like it’s got a totally unique plot as a result of stranding the characters in a small geographic region. Hell, the movie would directly influence nearly as much pop culture as Raiders did (Donkey and Diddy Kong in runaway mine carts, anyone?)
Anyway, I say all of this just to point out that had development on this been delayed a little bit longer, an adult Short Round would definitely be in it considering all of the hype off Quan’s Oscar win and mini-reunions with Ford. What a shame.

Once you add marketing on top of that, this is looking like needing at least $750 million to break even.

I heard an estimate for $900,000,000.
I don't normally want movies to fail, but this might be the lone exception. Everything I've seen from this movie makes it look absolutely terrible, especially the whole changing the future time travel nonsense. Leave that to the BttF franchise. The fact that Mangold referred to Indy as a nerd is everything I need to know about how he views the character. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I think it's rather obvious that this movie was put into production due to hitting a deadline without having a script ready. Disney completely messed up by assuming they could get Lucasfilm to be on the same wavelength that they got out of Marvel with their movies.
It's amazing that games like Fate of Atlantis, or Emperor's Tomb were great stories that were never adapted.

I've got a soft spot for both the game and comic version of Fate of Atlantis, and now I'm really wishing we'd get some sort of miniseries like Marvel's What If? and Star Wars Visions to adapt those stories and other standalone adventures. Feel like you could do it similarly to the animation style of What If? and work around the age of the main actors et al that way. Or see if Alden Ehrenreich can pull off Indiana Jones too.

General consensus seems to be "Not as good as the original trilogy, much better than Crystal Skull."

General consensus seems to be "Not as good as the original trilogy, much better than Crystal Skull." How much of that "better" is because OF the original trilogy and the leaning into references and whatnot?
