Don't know what is worse: Blowing a 3-1 lead or losing a baseball game despite having a no hitter I'd say the second one. That could only be compared to blowing a 3-0 lead.

The Rangers pull it out. I still don't like their chances against Carolina, but they look a lot better than they did at the start of this series. The East is kinda wide open. Honestly, during 5-on-5 play? Game 7 was about as statistically bad as the Rangers looked the entire series. The Penguins completely dominated possession, shots, positioning on quality chances, and on defensive metrics. Since the advanced stat era began in hockey with the tracking technology they have now, few teams have had as poor an overall showing as the Rangers and still managed to advance; seems likely thanks to Sheshterkin making the necessary saves (he definitely became a brick wall at times last night when it was most needed, dude's legit) plus Pittsburgh's assorted injuries, and even then the last two Ranger goals came off a missed penalty of them (Lafrieniere pulling the helmet off) and a weak penalty against Pitt at the start of OT. All of this would be a shrug and "hey, shit happens" from me, but then you've got NHL talking heads like Barry Melrose labeling the Rangers the "new powerhouse of the NHL", and it's like, Barry, did you watch a single game in this series? I know I just brought up stats, but the sheer eye test would tell you that things were not well, here. Sports analysis on the biggest platforms like ESPN just gets so, so lazy, and I don't think there's a remotely mainstream league where the coverage is lazier than in the NHL. If there's not a change in the Rangers' level of play and Carolina gets their goaltending sorted, then the Canes have no excuse for this series to go past five, short of Igor standing on his head (which he's certainly capable of). Meantime I went to bed with Calgary down 1-0 and had myself thinking that was probably it for them, but they're finally taking that next step, eh? Well, for this season the Pacific coming down to the Flames and the Oilers is the only appropriate ending; Vegas was better than their record but was too banged up, Kings were good but not really there yet, etc. I expect chaos and expect Canadian coverage of the playoffs to feel insufferable to millions of True Northerners out there. ETA - Watching clips and holy SHIT, Oettinger is on another level. Best playoff goaltending performance in ages. But Johnny Hockey shall be called a playoff choker no longer! Seriously, he was outstanding the entire series, as well.

I have a question, how many goalie are big fat guys? Wouldn't they have an advantage, or do they have to be athletic so they can't be big fat guys?

I have a question, how many goalie are big fat guys? Wouldn't they have an advantage, or do they have to be athletic so they can't be big fat guys? I'd imagine not many. You have to have very quick reflexes and mobility as well, limited as you are by pads (and there's a LOT of pads). These guys are facing shots on average of 100 mph, so they have to track a slab of rubber 3 inches wide, 1 inch thick, weighing 5.5-6 oz traveling at fastball speed. And then they have to be able to move to block/catch said slab of rubber, so they need be able to move FAST. And this doesn't even count the so called "Standing on his head" moments some goalies are known for.

I have a question, how many goalie are big fat guys? Wouldn't they have an advantage, or do they have to be athletic so they can't be big fat guys? None of them. Being a goalie requires both massive strength and lightning quick reflexes. Being a big fat guy would be a massive liability.

Charles Wang, former owner of the Islanders, had to be convinced not to try to pursue getting a sumo wrestler as a goalie. I'm not kidding.
Peter DeBoer out in Vegas. Wow.

By the way Alberta is the Canadian Texas. Canadian Florida is Newfoundland. I know, I know...I just had to go for the lowest hanging fruit, y'know? DeBoer getting fired is pretty bullshit; I know some people give him grief for never getting the job all the way done in the playoffs, but holy shit, winning a single cup is hard as hell and the guy tends to coach teams that are capable of making solid runs (Devils and Sharks to the Final, Knights with their appearances, etc.). Knights were actually pretty solid this year in their overall stats, but injuries and some horrid luck cost them; I get that it's a weak Pacific division so maybe ownership didn't want that excuse, but run the same roster out there next season with average team health and they're likely a contender again. I'd say DeBoer is basically a tier below the real best coaches in the league; put him up against a top flight guy and suddenly his approach seems too rigid and unable to adapt to what a Cup-caliber coach can do. But this definitely feels like an overreaction, same as Trotz being run out of Long Island. Makes me wonder if something else is going on behind the scenes with Vegas and the Islanders. And yeah, goalies need to be flexible and athletic, but given the dominance of butterfly style they do tend to be pretty massive guys in terms of sheer height and ability to cover ground. Really, really wish the league would get serious about shrinking pad sizes (without compromising safety); screw basically any other chance to the game to try and increase offense, just stop letting goalies take up so much damn space by just kneeling down and you'll get a nice boost in scoring. Too many Michelin Men going around out there, and butterfly style is just murder on the joints and has so many guys breaking down by the time they hit 30. I remember when Marty got old with the Devils and finally caved and got the bigger pads; he had another good season or two thanks to that, but it was kind of sad to see that as the sign that Father Time had caught up with him. Ok, conference semi predictions, let's go: -Avalanche in 6 -Hurricanes in 5, unless Igor goes full brick wall mode, then it goes 6. I'm pretty torn on the other two, but let's just go with gut feeling. -Panthers in 7 -Flames in 6, barring a full McJesus mode for Edmonton that could flip things. Honestly, I should probably go with the Lightning, I think the playoff experience will serve them well here, but I also just have that vibe that the Panthers have been dying for another shot at Tampa in this kind of spot. Maybe it's also the "how to get hockey more popular in non-traditional markets" mindset talking, but the Lightning winning last year against the Panthers and Florida returning the favor this year would be great for that rivalry.

I'll also add that goalies usually do a completely different kind of training and workout programs than the other players. They don't do much weight strength training, and when they do, it's usually a lot lighter for more reps. They aren't the guys trying to put up crazy numbers or bulk too much. Train more for speed, endurance, flexibility, mobility, hand eye, more plyometric exercises kind of stuff. I guess the way to describe it would be they train more like boxers than football players. If there's any position that benefits from being leaner, it's the goalie. Easier on the hips and knees.
Avs in 6 Flames in 7 Panthers in 7 Hurricanes in 6

Just hope we see some more of Alexis Lafreniere on the ice. Kid needs to play. He’s not a bust, just gets limited ice time. His 5 on 5 stats are actually pretty stellar.

Rangers looked better again, but Carolina pulls it out late. Home ice is huge sometimes.

What a choke job by the Rangers, hopefully Carolina puts them away quickly if this is how they are going to play? Sooner they are out, the sooner the Yankees will own the town.

Yeah, anyone saying Laf or Kakko are busts is out of their minds. It's entirely possible that neither reaches the ceilings they were projected for, but I'm pretty certain both will have very solid careers, at least. That said, weird mirror image game for the Rangers tonight: they were the better team for the first two periods. That said, by the third the Canes had woken up and really drove play. Makes me think that might've the one chance the Rangers will have to catch Carolina asleep at the wheel; Sheshterkin might still steal them a game, maybe even two if he's dominant, but I'm guessing they'll have to actually outplay the Canes if they want a chance. Meantime, we now bring you footage of the Calgary Flames greeting Mike Smith. EDIT: I see the ghosts of the 2021-2022 Devils goaltending carousel possessed everyone in Alberta last night.

Florida and Alberta teams legitimately f***ing hate each other and it makes for great TV. Even though Lucic is a cheap knuckle-dragger who I wish would fall off the face of the earth. It reminds me of the old playoffs, and it's a nice balance of skill and speed, and hitting and hatred.

Florida must come out strong tomorrow, because holy shit it would be easy for them to keel over and die after a loss like that. Keep waiting for Tampa to finally get tired, and it's just not really happening.
Blues put in a great showing, too; they're going to make that series go a little deep, and they honestly do have a chance to beat Colorado if they can maintain a high level consistently. Just can't really slip up, Avs are too good.
Local news, the Devils' play by ply guy Steve Cangelosi is stepping down to focus on calling Red Bulls soccer (probably likes having less travel). He's a solid play by play announcer, not a legend or anything, but it's still kind of weird: since the mid 2000s the Devils announce team had involved Doc Emrick, Chico Resch, and Steve, and now none of them will be on TV anymore for the team. Gonna feel weird watching games next season with a totally different voice driving the bus and trying to keep Ken Daneyko from going on long-winded tangents.

You really should drink yourself stupid each time the ESPN crew mentions "ex-Ranger" on the broadcast.
