Also can I just take note of how god damn weird the sharp divide in energy and enthusiasm between Pratt and Black during their parts in the Direct were? Pratt; zero enthusiasm almost bordering on dry sarcasm, eyes darting all over the place and constantly pausing, as if he was reading a prepared script and thus gave the vibe he didn’t believe a damn thing he was saying. Black; high energy and hyped enthusiasm, laser focused on the camera and speaking a mile a minute, giving a clear sense that he was having an absolute blast voicing Bowser.
Like that is a very weird duality vibe going on.

I didn't go in with much expectations, but the trailer was decent enough. And I'm glad Jack Black put on a voice instead of being Jack Black so I get some decent hopes now

Well... It certainly looks BETTER than the '93 version.
That certainly is a low bar I admit, but everything I saw and heard in that trailer at least FELT like it belonged in a Mario movie.

I'll never understand the Chris Pratt hate. Ignoring the controversy surrounding what he may or may not do in his personal life, I think it's a combination of oversaturation combined with his somewhat limited range. Every character he plays is more or less the same snippy wiseguy with varying levels of intelligence. It's pretty played out.

True, but the only one I can think of who has the same kind of market saturation as him is Ryan Reynolds, and he seems to avoid the hate by publicly being an absolute goofball sweetheart.

Need to hear more of Pratt as Mario to make a judgment on him specifically, but that looks pretty cute and fun. It reminded me of the Adventures comic, which is the basic direction I’d use for this project if I were in charge. And yeah, Bowser will probably own this movie.

Given the popularity of fan edits these days, it wouldn't surprise me to see a fan dub of Mario for the movie pretty quickly after the film hits home video.

Charles Martinet is said to be playing someone in the film, though the exact role is not known.
The big theory I've seen spread around is that he'll be playing a Jumpman equivalent; Mario & Luigi's father that battles Donkey Kong (the one who becomes Cranky Kong) and inspires them when they both end up in the Mushroom Kingdom.

His take on the character is fine within the confines of a game where Mario is a largely silent protagonist. I don't think it would work with him doing that voice for two hours. Also, I can't believe it took this long for it to sink in that the movie versions of Sega and Nintendo's iconic mascots are being voiced by Parks and Rec stars.

To be fair, Pratt has done a shitload of voice work, even before he was a big star. I do think if ever there was a role that didn't require a big name star to voice it, it's Super f***ing Mario. The movie sells itself on brand recognition alone.

How many lines does he actually do in a game that's just then repeated. 10, 20 at most?
