Look I don't know much about Super Mario Odyssey, but that bunny girl Hariet gives me Fifi La Fume vibes and makes me feel things. Put her in a live action Mario Brothers movie and I will gladly give it a fresh tomato rating.

As far as projecting yourself onto characters...you have to remember a lot of these characters existed at a time when the story in most video games was paper thin at best, usually the backstory came from the manual instead of what you learned in the game, even most text boxes were usually from the beginning and ends of games, with the majority of the middle being largely interrupted. Even when the technology existed to flesh out these characters, that wasn't a mainstream thing to do until the very late 90's. There's pros and cons with this, but it really comes down to whether or not the player wants the experience of being that person, or if they prefer to be an observer to the events they experience, I for one prefer the former. Most early games were about the adventure instead of learning about the character. It's the reason why the first Legend of Zelda is still my favorite, because it truly felt the experience of a child exploring the world and discovering things through curiosity or rumors they learned from others. Love the other Zeldas, but this would be the one I would adapt, as it's probably the most wholesome experience. I didn't need to learn about Link because Link was MY link to this fantastical world and reminding me of the adventure of exploration. No one holding my hand...just me wandering around and discovering things. Video game characters having character only matters to the kind of game you are playing. With fast paced platforming, I want to get to the action. Survival games definitely benefit from character development. Again, it's all a matter of preference, but I'll always take good gameplay over good story. Oh, I'm well aware of why this trope exists and the limits of tech at the time(I've been gaming since I was 4). I'm just annoyed by this insistence that ever game character from this era MUST follow this rule or they're ruined forever because people are scared that they're not what they imagined. That's just kind of the risk inherent to it: you begin a series in an era where the graphics/sound/etc. aren't detailed enough to kind of "force" a specific atmosphere or characterization on the audience, the players end up projecting a lot of what they imagine onto the series, but then you transition to streamlining things or mandating specific voices/appearances/settings/casts/tones/etc. and you risk alienating some of your audience. That's just the nature of any creative choice, really; you make a choice, plant your flag, but some people will say "eh, that's not what I got into it for" and walk away. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it is just a thing that happens, and a company like Nintendo doesn't want to risk Mario no longer being as large a cash cow for them and thus hold back on doing so. I'm sure there were a lot of people who got to, say, Mega Man 8 and went "wait...huh?" about a number of things, for example. I've always felt that the best way to handle this stuff is to just have mascots like that get a chance to try out all kinds of stories, tones, settings, etc. Have a few common threads that tie them together, but don't be afraid to try some radically different stuff; let there be a space for fans of all kinds of interpretations of the characters and worlds they inhabit. Easier said than done, obviously, given the resources that go into making games and the mentality of preserving IPs in specific manners to maintain their profitability across the widest audience. But hey, I thought it was cool when Nintendo didn't give up on the cel-shaded Toon Link look; instead they followed up Wind Waker with a few DS games with the same style and set in the same general timeline, while making different games with a different style for the home consoles, gave fans of each something they wanted.

I'd probably buy the "blank slate" argument more if not for the fact that the crux of your argument "not what I imagined" was based on a derivative work and not something you completely came up with on your own and that's it's not the "one true canon". At least, that's how it comes off to me.

Oh, so the penguins are the Minions of this movie, I figured it'd be the Toads or Goombas.

I liked it a lot. I have no problem with Mario’s voice, sounds fine to me. And bowser looks awesome.
Yup, really looking forward to it

Digging Black's Bowser voice. Sounds better than I thought. Pratt's voice just doesn't work for me but the little bit we've seen now looks enjoyable enough.

It is amazing how, despite not showing much, the trailer still ended up confirming at least part of the plot leak from a while back.
Pratt’s Mario voice is…whatever. It isn’t bad, but because the accent he is doing is so extremely light, it isn’t going to come through all the time, like it wasn’t even there in the first line he says in the trailer.
Jack Black’s Bowser sounds incredible however. You get the vibe Black had a blast voicing Bowser. Not just from the quality of his lines in the trailer but the energy he was giving off in his part of the Direct. Contrast that with Pratt who had all the energy of a hostage reading off a random note.

I liked everything about that Mario trailer outside of Mario himself.
I think Jack Black is going to steal the show as Bowser.

Can't really judge Pratt's take as we barely heard anything and the two lines heard seemed weirdly different in delivery. Jack Black as Bowser sounded great; just the right mix of threatening with some goofiness and he rarely ever half asses any performance, so that will be solid if nothing else.

My stance on it is Bowser sounds about as good as he possibly could, Mario's okay, Toad and Kamek are instantly incredibly annoying.
