NWA would do that with Flair vs Luger as well. Luger had him in the Torture Rack and Flair's screaming in pain and the ref calls for the bell causing everyone to think Luger's won only for the ref to reveal that Luger couldn't continue due to bleeding. Blood was a common screwy finish to get out of having to lose in the early 80s. Rhodes, Race, Flair & Backlund all had their share of blood costing them a match. When you stop having bloody brawls (or have to stop a match because of a scratch), then the blood finish goes away. Seems like an anti-climatic way to end a match, and an easy way to piss off the blood-thirsty audience. Was there a kayfabe reason for this? What about matches where the combatants continued to fight after bleeding, were they specialty matches that allowed that?

Everyone groaned at the ending of Luger-Flair but objectively it was a complete success: it set up a run of house show rematches that drew big money even as JCP was decaying.

In a just world, this sets up your cage match or Texas Death match. Or, if you're Dusty Rhodes, you're hoping to face Joe Frazier, the guest ref that cost you a million dollars. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
