Were the McDonald's Happy Meal toys and etc. really pulled? Or is this a Mandela Effect coming out of the "it was too dark and led to the Schumacherverse" thing?
Been looking through Newspapers.com around 1992 and see no articles about toys being banned.

None of the toys were pulled by McDonald's, but they did receive a ton of complaints from parents outraged at them promoting a movie as dark and violent as Batman Returns, which led to McDonald's upping their level of involvement with movies they had tie-ins with. Jurassic Park had a couple of the more violent scenes cut or edited at their behest, and Batman Forever required script approval from McDonald's execs before it could go into production.

Wasn't banned as the promotion definitely went from start to finish, but it was the reason for a major change in tone going forward. Case in point with McDonald's retaining the rights for Batman Forever with the glasses and the pogs.

I must note that I remember getting a backpack that was related to Batman Returns, as well as clothes (I was little at the time). Hell, I remember some other boy having a folder with Catwoman on it.

I had a Batman and Penguin car, but I do remember hearing some news chatter about how parents thought the movie was too scary (which was how my grandmother probably felt at the time, but my mom and aunt were cool with taking me to see it).

I remember getting a Batman Returns mask for Halloween. So there was still merch in general selling many months after the movie came out.

If they were actually pulled, then they did it too late, but I don't think they were. I collected the whole set and the cups. I was huge into Batman then, and all of the McDonald's near me were all decked out for the promotion.
I remember there being a small but vocal backlash against it, which everyone pretty much ignored.

I had the vehicle pack. Still got it. Batmobile, Batmissile, Bat Ski Boat, and the Penguin's duck. I spent a good 30 seconds laughing like an idiot because I thought I read "and the Penguin's dick"

I just recently purchased a complete set of bagged Returns toys, so they got out there.

I misinterpreted the title and wondered why Batman was going to a store and returning merchandise.
Move on. Nothing to see here.

I don’t think they ever pulled the toys, but I know they were PISSED at WB. They might have scaled back the actual media promotion, but I absolutely had some of the toys.

Yeah, nothing was actually pulled, but there was a huge backlash. I remember definitely having a ton of merchandise:
- Batman Returns backpack
- Batman Returns pencil case
- I was Batman for Halloween and my sister may have been Catwoman??
- Die-cast figurines of Batman, Penguin, Catwoman, one of the penguin soldiers, and the aforementioned vehicle pack
- McDonalds Penguin and Catwoman vehicles
- The book adaptation for kids (I think I still have it, I'll have to clean my closet one day and see)
- several Batman figures, as well as Catwoman and Robin (not in the movie, but he did have an action figure, actually my very first Batman toy)
- The collectible figurines that were given at the theatres (my aunt and uncle got me Batman and Penguin, then my friend gave me them, plus Catwoman, for my birthday)
So yeah, they still pumped out the merchandise lol

I'll just say the Penguin Happy Meal toys are the ones that seem to still turn up everywhere (thrift stores, collectibles).

I had the vehicle pack. Still got it. Batmobile, Batmissile, Bat Ski Boat, and the Penguin's duck. I also recall Catwoman driving a purple cat
