As absurd as this sounds, Could Bray Wyatt's release from WWE be a work? I don't think it is. Though there have been theories suggesting it is true due to the following.
1: WWE still produces Fiend Merchandise 2: He has been quiet on Social Media following his release. He didn't break character to thank the fans, His tweets seem to be in character even after being cut. & alot of the cryptic tweets he made following his release hint at a return of the Fiend in some form 3: WWE didn't announce him as Windham Rotunda (His real name) during the article showing his release. But as Bray Wyatt. 4: Though this theory is debunked. He had WWE in his Twitter Handle. (Up until his non-compete clause ended) 5: WWE could have temporarily released him to work on his movie he recently began, For budgetary reasons. Then resigns him when it is finished filming.
Windham is such a creative & innovative person. He could have came up with this release as a storyline, Building up hype & then returning when it is least expected, Likely with a more powerful version of the Fiend, & possibly without Funhouse Bray or the puppets (Hence why the WWE.Com release article referred to him as Bray Wyatt) It would be huge if true

Seems like they have been using gimmick names in these blurbs. www.wwe.com/article/andrade-releasedwww.wwe.com/article/steve-cutler-releasedwww.wwe.com/article/zelina-vega-released

I don't think it's a work, but I do believe the longer he goes unsigned, the more likely it is they bring him back

No. WWE would never release someone to do an outside project. At most it would give them leave and add the time onto their contract. They would never risk losing a talent for a Pillman style work.
As for the merchandise it was already being produced. They are going to milk every penny they can.

I'd be surprised if the unscrupulous negotiating office allow themselves to be worked into a Pillman-style contract swerve.

Released or not I think he will be a surprise Royal Rumble entrant.

Now I want it to be a work. Have a series of vignettes with Bray working kids' parties in a tattered Fiend costume until he's brought back to fight Omos.

The real question is... Does he come back with a jetpack.

The real question is... Does he come back with a jetpack. Not the Fiend. But "Sister Abigail" with a jetpack?? Huh? Huh?? HUH??!!!

That'd suck a lot and it'd tell me the dude's not as creative as people think he is. Cooling himself off tremendously, all these faked story leaks about being hard to work with, saddling Alexa with his gimmick--and some audience backlash--just so he could come back to absolutely zero real story meat because nothing about "budget cuts cost me my job I'm angry" is going to be used in-story to any kind of satisfying degree and shouldn't even matter to the Fiend character to begin with, all add up to sound really atrocious.

No. Really no. Not only is this not the type of "work the smart fans" angle that Vince has never been particularly interested in doing, but the WWE is a corporation now with a board of directors and shareholders and God knows what else to answer to. You can't just lie about the contractual status of someone under those conditions and not expect to pay a reckoning for it that I really really doubt Vince is interested in paying. Man, I’ll keep saying this until it stops being a thing; I f***ing hate Vince Russo. As much as I appreciate the sentiment, this is really more of an Eric Bischoff thing.

It's sad when someone being let go of their dream job can be confused with "a work."

See, I could see that maybe they'd agree a release to let him do some other projects or sort his head out or whatever, and agree he can come back later - with some sort of extended agreement around the release meaning he can't do X or Y.....
But then there was all that stuff about him being awkward to work with, which would be an odd thing to leak if you parted on good terms and expected him back in a year or whatever.
So, the theory is possible, but the context of this specific case would point towards no.
