twenty years ago today saw the world premiere of The Fellowship of the Rings, and everyone who saw it in theaters is now thinking "Damn, I feel old"
so give it up for the world's greatest trilly

Still looks better thsb many of todays movies. Looks far better than Hobbit did. I can only think of two moments that look like crap. There's a green screen shot of Isildur during the prologue that looks jarringly obvious is green screen (and that scene is only in the extended edition anyway). The other is a shot of Eomer during the Rohirrim's charge on the Pellanor Fields where he quite clearly takes his spear which is being held by an out of shot crew member for him, so it's essentially floating in midair. It's a testament to how much of a lightning in a bottle these films are that those are the nitpicks I can come up with.

I honestly still recall tearing up in the theater because the Shire looked almost exactly like how I'd imagined it...or, very likely, how I'd seen it once or twice depicted by the artists who ended up helping consult on the films.

My aunt loved the Tolkien books in high school and still does but she never liked the Peter Jackson LOTR films, she thought they were “butt nummers” due to their length. Me, I always got a kick out of them, and as much as I like the Bakshi version, Peter Jackson had the better Samwise by a mile and I always felt Sean Astin should have picked up some more hardware for his work in that role.

Went to all 3 of them with my Dad in theatres, he’s such a huge fan of Tolkien. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years since Fellowship

Love it. Along with BTTF it's the best ever movie trilogy.

I still do an annual LoTR marathon of the extended cuts. Easily one of my favorite movie trilogies only matched by the Star Wars OT.

the only one i went to see in the cinema still can't believe they made three different movies in that trilogy and there is NO WAI there was lots of blubbing when THAT particular moment happened! i recently saw most of it on tv and when that scene came up ... no amount of mithril is gonna mop up those water streams

Never seen the third movie but seen the first two multiple times and every time been bored out of my mind. There's a lot to respect about them in terms of the quality of the production but they just feel like such meandering chores to me.

The only trilogy where all 3 movies should have won the Best Picture Oscar. Damn Academy had to wait till Return of the King to give it and Jackson the Best Picture and Best Director awards.

Still looks better thsb many of todays movies. Looks far better than Hobbit did. The benefits of practical effects. It's astounding just how much of LOTR was made of actual sets and on-location filming. There's the infamous tale of Ian McKellen breaking down on set of one of the Hobbit movies because he'd been acting by himself in front of a green screen with green boxes in place of actual sets for days at a time. In contrast, you have stories of how Sean Bean was afraid of flying in helicopters so would walk with Viggo Mortensen through the wilderness in full Boromir and Aragorn costumes to where they were shooting, and how the Fellowship and the crew would often camp out all night for on-location shoots. You don't get that kind of camaraderie when you're reduced to putting your actors in front of a green screen for 75% of the shoot.

From the Watcher's debut to the credits of Fellowship is, IMHO, the greatest sequence of scenes/music/emotion in cinema history. Discovery, awe, great loss, peace, doom, self doubt, friendship, sacrifice, utterly lost, hope, pure darkness, shining light... everything. The Score hits all those feelings with perfection. And the imagery is just spot on.

Great films, love them all. The Mines of Moria section being suitably epic.
