Jaleel White as Urkel and Henry Winkler as The Fonz I think of Henry Winkler as the lawyer from Arrested Development more than the Fonz. You should watch the HBO series “Barry” .. Winkler is great in that.

A couple that popped into my mind. Ed O'Neil-Until Modern Family he was always known as Al Bundy. He's still AL Bundy to me. Same with the rest of cast of MWC actually. I have a hard time seeing Dean Cain as anything other than Superman. Dean Cain’s star has fallen something fierce. I saw him pop up on Shark Tank a while back. Not even as a pitchman or guest panelist. Him and some other guy were just the quasi-famous people some entrepreneurs got to spice up their presentation. Of course I was born in 1986 and grew up when he was on top of the world so he still has disproportionate star power for me.

Cool, it only took to the first reply in this thread to get a completely wrong answer. Usually it takes at least a few replies before somebody says something wrong. Aaron Paul will always be Jesse Pinkman. Jack Gleeson will always be King Joffrey. Sounds pretty subjective to me. On a personal level it absolutely is, but when you expand it to the wider public consciousness, things get a bit more objective. In the example of Ford, he had two iconic roles in franchises that are practically woven into the fabric of pop culture itself. Star Wars and Indiana Jones are simply too big for him to generally be known for just one or the other.

David Duchovny = Fox Mulder
I even know some Californication fans who bingewatch The X-Files and Californication one after the other and pretend that Hank Moody is Fox Mulder living under a pseudonym.

Wow 3 pages in and no one has mentioned Seann William Scott as Stifler. He’s also quite while known as Doug Glatt from Goon. Well regarded but also slightly unknown movies.

Jason Statham as Chev Chelios. Yes, I know that it's a different case with action stars, but when watching the Transporter films, I expect Frank Martin to get as violent and start spouting obscenities like Chev Chelios. The same could be said about any movie he was in. I could watch The Italian Job and expect to see Handsome Rob trying to keep his adrenaline up.

Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite. If he was smart, he would have milked that character for every penny. Have Napoleon Dynamite goes to College, Napoleon Dynamite: European Adventure.
Instead he wanted to be "taken seriously as an actor".

I know he's done a whack of stuff but I can only see Lt Dan whenever Gary Sinise pops up. Same with Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster

Chris Hemsworth probably won't ever escape Thor's shadow. Michael J. Fox will always be first and foremost Marty McFly. Same goes for pretty much any supporting cast member from any Star Trek show. Funny, maybe it's because TOS aired before I was born, I knew William Shatner as Officer T J. Hooker and Avery Brooks from DS9 as Hawk.

The series leads have all gained a decent amount of notoriety with other shows and movies, be it T.J. Hooker, Quantum Leap, Walking Dead, etc. With the exception of LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, and some of the cast on the newer shows, there aren't really any cast members on any of the shows whose work before or since has matched or eclipsed their Star Trek roles.

Alex Winters as Bill S. Preston, Esq.
Granted that's more because his career mainly focused on behind the scenes stuff more than in front of the camera... (especially compared to Keanu .)

A LOT of sitcom roles fit... Besides some of the aforementioned (the Fonz, Urkel, Al Bundy, Gilligan)... Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams = Laverne and Shirley Jimmie Walker = J.J. Carroll O'Connor = Archie Bunker Sherman Helmsley = George Jefferson Gary Coleman = Arnold Jackson Dennis Haskins = Mr. Belding Dustin Diamond = Screech Al Lewis = Grampa Munster Don Adams = Maxwell Smart. And even That Other Role was an animated Maxwell Smart type. Jerry Mathers = The Beaver Ken Osmond = Eddie Haskell The Golden Girls were versatile, but I think Sophia when I think Estelle Getty. Maybe it's hard to not see Blanche when I see Rue too. Generally agreed. I think it extends to most of the sitcoms that most of us here grew up with. I.e., as long as TV is a viable medium, Ben Savage and Danielle Fischell will best be known as Corey & Topanga. Melissa Joan Hart will best be known as Sabrina. Kelsey Grammar will be best known as Frasier. Brandy Norwood will best be known as Moesha, at least as far as her acting roles. Everyone in the Tanner household will best be known for their Full House roles, regardless of how many Hallmark movies Candace Cameron does. (Granted, this could all change down the line. But based on current career trajectory….) Really, about the only stars from this era that I can think of who really broke out of this pattern were Tim Allen and Bryan Cranston. You could probably make an argument for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as well, though personally, I’ll probably always think of her first as Elaine. A couple others outside the sitcom realm: Tyler Perry for Madea (as actor or producer, take your pick) This one has been more cemented over time, but Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold

Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean He's probably equally well known, on this side of the Atlantic at least, as Edmund Blackadder. Watching Blackadder with friends from overseas is fun when it drops for them that the clever, charming cynic is Mr Bean and the stupid, foppish oaf is Dr House. I would go for Russell Crowe as he has such a range of work and characters from the poignant A Beautiful Mind to epics like Master and Commander and Les Mis but if you asked 100 people for a Crowe role that springs to mind 99 would say Maximus. I think Crowe has tried to find a character that can top this hence playing Robin Hood and the biblical Noah but both fell short.

I wasn’t forgetting that role. Heck, I probably watched her more as Clarissa. But as far as mainstream notoriety, I think she’ll probably always be better known as Sabrina.
