Wasn't he one of the ones WWE accidentally announced were dead in the past? Not suggesting that happened here, just, I know that's happened with a handful of wrestlers.
Beyond that, he's one of those guys who had a very colorful career, but also kind of sounded like someone with major issues, especially going by his Japanese career.

Can’t wait for the Iron Sheik’s Twitter tribute tomorrow.
I think I had a Corporal Kirchner action figure when I was a kid but it didn’t have any sentimental value to me after a year. Anyway, here’s a 21-gun salute for your contributions to the wrestling business, sir!

This is very sad, but something I'm trying to keep in mind about it is... Wasn't he one of the ones WWE accidentally announced were dead in the past? Yes, this happened on WWE.com in either 2006 or 2007 and didn't get corrected for about a full day if memory serves correct. Morbid and unfortunate as it was at the time, it did give him the rare opportunity to see what people would be saying about him after he passed on, and then gave him about 15 more years of life.

Looking it up, he was apparently flattered people even remembered him, given he wasn't in WWF that long. He also was apparently going to be in the Gimmick Battle Royal and then dropped from it for one reason or another. Maybe since he had a reputation for stiffing people, and for his rather unhinged attack on Hiroshi Ono in IWA in Japan, and they just decided it was too big of a risk. Or, could be they couldn't agree on money or something. He was still wrestling in FMW until like 2002, so maybe it wasn't worth blowing that off to go do a one-off gimmick match in WWF that wasn't going to be regular work, anyhow.

RIP. It is too bad he was kind of a glorified jobber in the WWF, but at least he got a win at Wrestlemania 2. He was in the opening match of the first live WWF event I went to as a kid.

Oh man, when I was a teenager I used to watch that ICP Stranglemania tape all the time. Leatherface was bad ass!
Rest in peace, bro.

WWE later referenced this when they did a personality profile on him in 2011 by saying "false reports of his demise surfaced on the internet"

Loved Corporal Kirchner. Was one of my favorites. He definitely looked like a badass. Had some success in the business though I always thought he could've been bigger than he was

Can’t be too many people who’ve died twice.
In all seriousness, as Leatherface he was wholly believable as being absolutely mental. Probably because he actually was.

I remember being both baffled and delighted when I bought those old FMW tapes and saw him as Leatherface, such a fun and goofy gimmick.

I mainly know him as Leatherface from those FMW DVDs from back in the day.
RIP, he sold the hell out of that character

Anyway, here’s a 21-gun salute for your contributions to the wrestling business, sir! In a sense he transcended wrestling because so many kids had his LJN simply because family were buying it for kids because it was an Army man like G.I. Joe. I remember seeing one in my neighbors basement, he didn't even like wrestling but had that one. For him not sticking around long in WWF, LJN made three versions of his toy-clean shaven, stuble and beard. They must have thought he would be around for a while. I know he had some issues with Vince before he was fired but I wonder why they soured on him so quickly. I know he wasn't Slaughter with charisma BUT he WAS an actually military man. By early 1987, if not sooner he was losing all his singles matches and even losing (though not the one pinned) in tag matches with no gimmick jobbers. It's sad he really did pass. He did a few autograph signings around 2017-2018 and seeemed like a nice guy. Also a good family man. His exploits as Leatherface were crazy. I'm surpsised he was never hired by ECW though I'm sure it would have been bad for Paul Heyman if he shorted him on money.

Since I started watching, well, any kind of wrestling during the build to Mania 2, Kirschner came before even Sgt. Slaughter in my knowledge. (I didn't start watching G.I. Joe, nor watched the AWA yet).

Is it bad that my first reaction when I saw this thread was "are we SURE this time?" RIP Corporal Kirchner.
