The Royal Rumble is an hour long match, featuring 30 wrestlers. Think of how many storylines you could set up, or feuds could start/continue with just a single interaction? The fact they have all that time to fill, all those wrestlers to use & still don't do anything with them, must be a clear indication to talent that the company doesn't care. by comparison the 1990 Rumble match had multiple storylines going in, and a few new ones born afterwards.

We just got done covering Aztec Warfare 2 and that had threads ontop of threads weaving stories through everyone involved and having those stories weave through debuting faces and ontop of call backs and keeping continuity and building stories yet to even come. And having covered that so closely it really heightens how absoloutley shoddy and horrid this rumble was.

I know I am. I am frustrated about the men's side of things but compared to the women they get a lot more attention at least (more talking about those not in title picture really) Yup. The women are basically down to like 10-15 minutes a week if they are lucky. On a three hour RAW. And it's sandwiched between recaps. That's definitely a side effect of the Johnny Ace and Bruce Pritchard power trip. Because Stephanie had mentioned before this whole creative shakeup, that WWE was aiming to give women the same amount of time the men get. It also doesn't help that with Bruce and Johnny in charge, there's virtually no chance of the women getting any time outside of when they are in the title picture or already heavily favored by the company. Unless they decide to pose for Playboy again, the girls will see their screen time reduced so long as that pig is there

The way all the women not named Becky, Charlotte, and I guess Bianca are treated, is not encouraging no.

I mean this is the same feeb who thought the show should continue when one of his wrestlers just f***ing DIED in front of everyone. Vince seems he's only one step removed from rushing the ring kicking and screaming because he changed his mind in the middle of the match. You're not wrong about Owen, I wouldn't say the thought process during Over the Edge should be 100% applicable to here mind you. That time stopping the show really was the only reasonable option in my opinion, I agree.
I know Inoki once interrupted a match he hated, can't recall who it was with though. I swear Vince has came out during an intermission and shat on the crowd at one show, can't remember if it was a house show, a TV taping, or one of those newz rubbish.
Vince came out at a house show and stopped a match mid-match because he didn’t like it. I think it was Rhino vs. Tajiri at MSG.

Vince McMahon's whole method reminds me a lot of 'Bioware magic' and how the studio mythologized the idea that everything could be a dumpster fire but come together last minute (by working obscene amounts of destructive overtime) and be great. Mostly because over time, that method hit diminishing returns and everything was so rotten about the core process behind all of it solely buoyed by the faith that it always works out and their method is solid. But both companies have proven that it was never about the magic of that method and become too drunk on their own accolades to realize that coherent work needs to be put in, and the things they did that succeeded succeeded in spite of that approach, not through it. Vince thinks changing things a million times for his super better idea makes it better only because he gets to live in a bubble of producing his content, and never gets the perspective that shows him the flaws of how he makes everything, leaving him trapped in a cycle that wears down everyone around him emotionally, and now it's reaching one of those points where it's taking a real toll on the product and the people behind it. Working for Vince McMahon is just headgames and demons. It saddens me we have something more recent than my go to "Kubrick's movies were good despite him being a sociopathic asshole not because of it." But yeah... same principle.

I think people place way too much emphasis on wrestlers being happy or unhappy because of their place on the card, who they wrestle with, if they're being booked to win. Sure it matters to an extent, but that's all normal. The reason morale is down, and has been down, is how poorly everything is communicated, how poorly the stories are told and written out. The last minute changes, the getting stuck in catering for 7 months because they just dont want to write for you. They understand that a Brock or Rousey will be in the main event, that's all pride stuff. Morale goes down when no one knows whats going on, you dont know whats going on with you week to week, or even hour to hour. It's hard to work under those conditions, and constantly being worried they'll just forget about you. That happens in every company, but it's so magnified in WWE. Disorganization is what they said brought WCW down, and now they're absolutely in the same boat. Right. It's sort of like how a lot of wrestlers had good morale during the Hogan years. Obviously not all of them, no, but many of them enjoyed how clear their roles were, etc, even if the schedule was tough. They at least knew what was expected of them, had programs that built over months, and didn't have a man who changed his mind every nanosecond and threw the script out because he the elves that live in his brain told him to. Hell Chris Jericho's book he was amazed when he got to the WWE how organized they were compared to WCW. Since WWE had things that were mostly planned out and changed when needed as opposed to up in the air until the last minute... it sure doesn't sound like it's that first way anymore...

The fact they have all that time to fill, all those wrestlers to use & still don't do anything with them, must be a clear indication to talent that the company doesn't care. It's funny. I rewatched the 2015 Royal Rumble today, and even that one, widely called the worst Rumble of all time, had various stroylines running throughout the match. There was a bit where Wyatt and Harper were alone in the ring together, and Rowan (who was not in the match) came out and they had a confusing brawl where no one in the audience could tell who the allies were. They had Wyatt and Rusev forming a bit of an alliance and saving each other a lot. Goldust and Stardust continued their feud. Miz and Mizdow had dissension when Mizdow wouldn't let Miz take his spot. And of course Kane and Big Show teamed up to eliminate everyone the crowd cared about until they eventually started arguing for reasons. I came away from that rewatch thinking, other than being completely tone deaf to what the audience wanted, the 2015 Rumble wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered, and the first half of it was actually pretty good. This year had, what, 3 stories that weren't about the winner? Sami vs. Johnny Knoxville, which lasted 90 seconds. Gable rallies the troops to eliminate Omos. Another 90 seconds. And Corbin and Moss run wild until Drew returns and gets revenge by eliminating both of them. They never had the Mysterios in at the same time to continue whatever dissension it was they tried to start on RAW with them throwing each other over the top rope. They had Ricochet and Ridge Holland in the match at the same time and they barely interacted. It's like WWE is actively and aggressively trying to tell their audience that outside the main event, none of these people matter.

It all came down from Vince McMahon as he had his fingers deep in every aspect of the PPV. I'm shocked! Wait, what's the opposite of shocked? I'm resigned!

Per PWInsider, Tyson Kidd and Paul Levesque not being there were two major reasons why the Rumble matches felt different this year.

"Different" being "Shit" really, especially in pacing and presentation Man... idk why Kidd wasn't there, but HHH's absence from WWE is kinda getting more and more noticeable

I think the biggest key for Rumbles not feeling the same anymore is the loss of Pat Patterson, first when he retired, and now that he's passed and can't even be an advisor on the match...but that's something that stretches back a handful of years, so it's not unique to 2022.
For all that can be said about Triple H, though, the guy does at least seem to give a damn about in-ring storytelling if we go by how a lot of NXT's best stuff was done, so I can imagine him and Kidd not being there made a negative impact.
...Damnit, now I'm gonna end up queuing up the Lapsed Fan video where Vince and Pat book the 2015 Rumble from Vince's pool.

By the time Triple H returns to WWE (if ever), it's gonna be a shock to him.

Vince came out at a house show and stopped a match mid-match because he didn’t like it. I think it was Rhino vs. Tajiri at MSG. If I remember the story, Tajiri & Rhino were told by the agent beforehand to slow things down in their match. So they went out there & did lots of restholds & headlocks, it was like a 'Best of Randy Orton' compilation. Well, the crowd weren't happy, got restless, & started chanting "boring". Vince then storms to the ring, calls off the match, & instead announces a bikini contest to wake up the crowd. I can only assume that this bikini contest was due to happen anyway, because I'm unsure how you would book one on the fly.

NEWZ sites are saying Shane was the 'head producer' for this years Rumble match, but that Vince totally pulled it apart at the show and changed loads of it.
Apparently Brock was always scheduled to win, but he lobbied hard for a Brock destroys everyone sequence again.
The match also apparently ran long some how, so the whole ending was rushed.
It's no surprise morale is that low when a part timer still hold both that much sway, and in the end, Vince is just gonna Vince at the last minute anyway.
