Cole's beaten a bunch of AEW names *and* has worked a Dark taping. He even listed off all the guys he's beaten in singles matches so far during one of his promos. The list of Cole’s name opponents he’s beaten in singles matches is still pretty weak- 10, Evil Uno, Wheeler Yuta, Trent, Silver, Kazarian, Jungle Boy and then he went 50/50 with OC. All those names you mentioned would literally get anyone in AEW to a number one rank if they were all beaten with no losses, and the Cassidy match he lost didn't count toward his record, it's pretty cut and dry.

This part of the storyline has always bugged me. Wardlow works for MJF and isn't considered AEW Wrestler. Yet he has had alot of matches. I don't see why is allowed to have matches without being a AEW talent. There have been many independent wrestlers that have had matches on AEW TV without being contracted talent. This is where Wardlow stands. Many of those have been signed if they have a good showing. In kayfabe, Wardlow was likely offered a full AEW contract. But that deal would have yo go through MJF, since Wardlow works for him. Whenever Wardlow breaks away from MJF, he'll likely get "signed" by AEW and be in the rankings proper. They need to make these things clearer to the viewers. When MJF said "You work for me, not AEW" it should have been followed by something like "all you are to Tony Khan is another indie guy he throws on tv sometimes!"

How is Wardlow not the #1 contender for the AEW title? Because his storyline right now is MJF/Spears holding him back and controlling him. and you could always have "smart" mark come out with another batch of fine print where wardlow can;t get a world title shot until mjf says so.

Yeah I hope they just get away from them soon because they literally have no rhyme nor reason to them and only exist to point out the dumb ass flaws in them all of the time.

In storylines however, FTR hasn't been gunning for the tag titles, they've been defending their own belts, which keeps them higher up on the ranking scale So I guess that's why they're still there. They're in a completely different feud though, don't see how it's an issue, Dax is just trolling. And more people need to be talking about this interaction

I'd need to rewatch their appearances, but the last few weeks, even this timeframe as it stands, has felt like they've been dealing with Roppongi, and then United Empire That said, I am thinking Express retain in the Ladder Match, and post-Forbidden Door, they get a shot, and they get the belts. That'd be my guess.

I absolutely think they need to phase rankings out. If you wanna have them on deck, cause it fits a character or a story? Cool. Otherwise, there shouldn’t be any attention paid to it imo. This compels more rivalries and angles to occur out of character/story driven points. Hell, even now someone like MJF recently, in the last few months, said “I talked to Tony and this match is happening…” That’s happened before. It’s fine, it suffices. But I think they’re gonna stick around regardless.

I've always thought the rankings could use some supplementary material behind them. For example, have Tony or Dasha or whoever release a weekly YouTube video alongside the rankings explaining the movement each week and the logic behind the changes. If someone is getting a title shot and they aren't #1, maybe explain the reasoning why that person is getting the shot. If someone reappears on the rankings after injury like Butcher & The Blade did, you can just flat out say that and people will understand in lieu of having to guess the logic.
Moxley suddenly becoming the #1 Contender after being #4 in the rankings really undermined the whole concept.

Khan explained why though, the others outside of Wardlow didn't wrestle that week, Mox won a main event match to go to 7-0, I don't think that undermines the ranking system whatsoever for him to get the number one spot like that But I also am giving them a bit of slack because it's not like they planned for this. It kinda just happened, and Moxley was there and had enough logic to be given this match. It's also probably who New Japan liked most to get it given it's Moxley.

The rankings are a tool to help legitimize the product and show that wins/losses matter, but also they'll prioritize existing storylines and better drawing matches if the opportunity is there. Exactly the same way they work in combat sports and collegiate team sports. Y'all would lose your shit at UFC booking or the CFB championship if you have an issue with this stuff.

They can't make wins/losses matter if they also are regularly bypassed for storyline reasons. Having rankings doesn't offend me, it just seems that (and most other attempts at a 'real sports feel') are just a waste of time and probably a bit of headache for the person booking the show.

How are wins/losses bypassed? Has anyone on a losing streak gotten a title shot without a very specific reasoning?

In every wrestling company, people win lots of matches when they are being pushed and lose them when they are not - unless there is a specific storyline reason behind it. That's the situation in AEW, except they also have a rankings system which they have to come out and justify on a weekly basis because they don't want to stick to it. So just don't have it.

Like, not only do I think it would make Tony’s life a lot easier, but it’d give ample room for guys to breakout with angles/storylines.

Yeah, I think the rankings should just go. They never make any real sense and are rarely actually used for much purpose, and they constantly have to either 1), write around them, or 2), just ignore them entirely. There's no advantage to doing it.

Almost every company that have tried doing rankings... and like literally EVERY company has done them... inevitably end up dropping them because they don't add a lot to the product and tend to actually stiffen storytelling instead of actually helping it... Especially when you get stuff like FTR being the #1 contenders for months... and people far below them getting title shots before them.

AEW is usually pretty good about getting pieces into place to make their rankings reflect some kind of internal logic. The Moxley thing is an emergency situation for a major show in light of a freak occurrence that couldn't have been seen coming, but as far as wheel greasing goes, it is nothing compared to what Dana White pulls. Guys who haven't fought in a couple years and last fought in another division several years before that will sit ranked and clog up space. It's a mess. At least wrestling being worked means you can cook up story justification and book along those lines. It makes wrestling rankings actually less crooked than real actual sports' rankings, and that's sad, but it stands out as an overlooked element to the complaints about AEW's system.
