I ask again, Weren’t the Rankings supposed to matter?

Because I’m now curious why The Acclaimed aren’t getting their title shot, they’re #1 in the rankings and they don’t even get a guaranteed spot in the Triple Threat?

It wouldn’t be so frustrating if they hadn’t promised in the beginning that these rankings would actually be important.

I'm still confused why the hell they're still #1 when they decisively lost what was mostly a handicap match against a perpetually unranked team and have only won one match since over people nobody's heard of.

It's also up to the wrestlers themselves, to cash in that shot sometimes. Hangman for example, lost his number one ranking to Brian Cage

Acclaimed might be hanging back till post PPV, content to keep the tag spot at one, and see who are champs post PPV

They have had ONE standard tag match since. Don't even pretend like they've done anything impressive, the rankings are basically just meaningless nonsense.

And really even then I think having your perennial number one contenders lose to what's basically a nostalgia act for no reason just seems to serve to demonstrate that AEW doesn't give a f*** about the tag titles.

The best kayfabe explanation is Bowens wanted to try to get in the ladder match first this week. I'm sure they'll be in the battle Royal next week. Being ranked first doesn't guarantee title shots necessarily.

Darby is one of the top talents and Sting hasn't lost a match, so I don't exactly see this as shitting on the tag belts at all? The tag rankings are just lopsided in the start of the year cause Bucks/ReDragon/FTR haven't really gunned into another gear, so Express have beaten the likes of Silver/Reynolds and Gunn Club, and Acclaimed's record looks better than most despite the loss.

There should be a new updated ranking this week though, so idk how they even look this week then? Some things probably clearly changed like Dante no longer being in that spot after losing to Hobbs

The rankings DO serve a purpose, although they have been relying more and more on matches that allow people to jump the line. Plus, the fact that the TNT and TBS Championships basically operate under an open challenge system further confuses things.

I will say that ReDragon getting a title shot without even having wrestled a standard tag match as a team is a bit glaring. But like I said, they're relying more and more on number one contenders gimmicks to get the people they want into title matches. Not anything new (Brian Cage and Eddie Kingston getting title shots when they weren't even ranked), but there's been an over-reliance on them in the last year.

This is where I say again that AEW could hugely benefit from having a show where, like, Big Show, Mark Henry, and Alex Marvez break down the events of the week, discuss the implications of future matches, and explain the rankings, in the style of SportsCenter for people who closely follow the product.

The ranking system is really cool in concept, but it definitely feels like there’s no rhyme or reason to it when you really pay attention.

but also... like there's a reason almost every company at one point or another used actual rankings to decide storyline stuff... and usually end up dropping them pretty quickly.

Cause it's designed to aid storylines and actually more often then not stifles them.

Things in wrestling only matter when they're important to advancing a storyline or character. Rules, friendships, win/loss records, it's nothing new, it's not even something exclusive to wrestling. If the product us enjoyable you just overlook these things.
