How do you think he would have faired if the WWF had actually picked him up instead of him just defecting for a few weeks for storyline purposes? I think he would have been pushed pretty decently honestly around that time and could have been in the IC title contention at least

I've thought about this too, but I think RVD needed his TV title run in ECW to really build his reputation. He needed Fonzie as his obnoxious mouth-piece. He needed his partnership with Sabu. Most importantly, he needed an environment where he could fully display his ability without any restrictions.
A '97 WWF RVD would have looked impressive, but he would have had a difficult time getting over as anything but guy does kicks and flips. His mystique and rep from his ECW run is why he had so much hype behind his run in '01.

With his mic skills unless he had a good manager he would have never gotten above the Shamrock level. As you said it was the legend of his ECW TV title run that made him a star when he came in in 2001. Without that he was just a flippy kick guy that cant talk.

I cringe at the idea of there being an alternate universe where RVD never came out to "Walk" before having a show-stealing performance haha.

It would depend on how much Vince would've been willing to get behind him in 1997. If Vince saw money in him, he would've become Mr. Monday Night, for sure. If not, he would've had a few good showings on Raw, before being relegated to Shotgun Saturday Night and the Light Heavyweight division. Maybe, by word of mouth from the agents on Shotgun, he could've gotten another look by Vince in 98/99, but it would've been too little, too late by that stage. Without a solid push somewhere, he was never going to be star we all know him as today.

I’m watching 1997 Raws and just getting to the original ECW invasion. At this time Shawn Michaels had lost his smile and was out. Obviously RVD is not as charismatic as HBK but could deliver in the ring. Could he take his place as the athletic guy in the WWF?

I am not sure he gets to his next level in WWF. But by the time 1999 comes around, he is legit one of the most over guys in the states and could've commanded major money from WWF or WCW if his contract was up.
