Don McLean? Then again, American Pie is like 3 hit songs in one. Gloria Gaynor and I Will Survive. Lulu has a couple well known songs. Here, it's just To Sir With Love. In the UK Don McLean has had two number one singles. Neither are American Pie.

A Flock of Seagulls Everybody remembers “I Ran” It wasn’t until the video for “Space Age Love Song” that we got to see THE HAIRSTYLE that we associate with the lead singer. The song still gets a decent amount of play on classic rock stations. And I still even hear “Wishing” two or three times a year. He definitely had the iconic hairstyle in the I Ran video. Didn't know about Space Age Love Song until the Todd In The Shadows video but that song is a banger.

Warrant had plenty of solid hits; it's just that "Cherry Pie" ended up as the song that (unfortunately) seems most remembered from them. It's too bad because "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is like... One of the very best hair metal songs ever written but barely anyone remembers it.

The Boomtown Rats.
They had 9 top 20 singles, 2 number ones but I bet most people could only name "I don't like Mondays"

Lit with “My Own Worst Enemy”
It only peaked at 51, so they’re a no hit wonder

I don't know if this counts, but "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr., that was a big pop hit, but not an R&B hit. You can hear any other Ray Parker Jr. or Raydo hit on retro R&B stations except for "Ghostbusters."

Aqua, are known for "Barbie Girl" but "Doctor Jones" and "Turn back time" are very good songs people outside of europe may not have heard

As a Canadian it always seems absurd to me that "One Week" is the Barenaked Ladies' biggest song. I was raised on Gordon, bitch. "Brian Wilson" is my jam ENID! Anyways, my answer to the original question would be Kansas... everyone knows "Carry On Wayward Son" and little else (maybe "Dust In The Wind" or possibly "Fight Fire With Fire").

A-Ha Yeah I know ‘The Living Daylights’ sure. But the only song anyone remembers by them is ‘Take On Me’. Except it didn’t go to number 1 in the U.K. ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ did though. And barely anyone remembers that. Considering the massive Downer Ending the video inflicts on 'Take On Me', is it not remembering or choosing not to remember?

Phil Collins has had a ton of hits, but nothing is on the level of "In the Air Tonight".

Definitely Rick Astley; he actually has a handful of number ones in the UK and abroad, but Never Gonna Give You Up is so damn popular that he almost feels like a one-hit wonder. Together Forever is starting to gain a bit of a following, it's meme status is you unlocking the hidden 'good' ending of Rickroll

ICP never really had any hit songs, but I have yet to meet someone who has never heard Chicken Huntin before.

Watching I Love the 90's the panelists acted like Collective Soul's only hit was Shine.

To most people Björk is the swan dress and maybe "It's Oh So Quiet". She has pretty much disowned that song ever since.
