As a Canadian it always seems absurd to me that "One Week" is the Barenaked Ladies' biggest song. I was raised on Gordon, bitch. "Brian Wilson" is my jam "Old Apartment" is legitimately one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Co-signed. That song f***ing slaps. I'm actually seeing them in July

A Flock of Seagulls Everybody remembers “I Ran” It wasn’t until the video for “Space Age Love Song” that we got to see THE HAIRSTYLE that we associate with the lead singer. The song still gets a decent amount of play on classic rock stations. And I still even hear “Wishing” two or three times a year. He definitely had the iconic hairstyle in the I Ran video. Didn't know about Space Age Love Song until the Todd In The Shadows video but that song is a banger. He absolutely did not. He had bad hair in the video, but that monstrosity didn’t show up in that video. As for my pick, I present Julian Lennon. For starters, the song Americans remember him for (Too Late for Goodbyes) wasn’t even his biggest hit in some parts of the world (Saltwater). Secondly, it wasn’t even the only Top 10 hit off of his debut album (Valotte, the title track of that album). Third, while it isn’t the Mainstream charts he topped the US Rock chart with a couple of other songs and was top 3 with another (“Stick Around”, “Now You’re in Heaven”, and “Say You’re Wrong”). What’s more, the stuff off of his last 2 albums has been some damned good stuff that the mainstream has ignored. They’re also sleeping on his brother’s work as The Claypool Lennon Delirium has some damned good stuff.

If we are counting "One Hit Wonders" as in people that people consider one hit wonders despite having more than one... ' Men Without Hats, everyone think of Safety Dance... but they had another big hit with Pop Goes the World.

ICP never really had any hit songs, but I have yet to meet someone who has never heard Chicken Huntin before. "Miracles," considering every retroactive metric of streaming, probably qualifies as a hit. "Chicken Huntin" was among their minor radio hits thanks to the Great White Hype soundtrack (probably bigger than "Dead Body Man" from 'The Fear' soundtrack but not as big as "Another Love Song" which benefitted from The Box rotation) Then there's "Every Halloween," their October 2001 annual Halloween single that got a surprising bit of Stateside radio play in the post-9/11 radio world as it was both a new song released when nobody wanted to put out music and could absolutely in no way remind anyone of the September 11 terrorist attacks. I want to say in the late 90s they had a minor hit in Europe with the Jason Nevins remix of "Hokus Pokus" too as he was so hot off the Cypress Hill remix that every remix he did rode a wave, but I may be mistaken. Haven't revisited the UK charts from that era in a while.

A-Ha Yeah I know ‘The Living Daylights’ sure. But the only song anyone remembers by them is ‘Take On Me’. Except it didn’t go to number 1 in the U.K. ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ did though. And barely anyone remembers that. The Verve & Blur may have been 1 hit wonders in the US but both had bigger hits in the U.K. that went to Number 1. ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ for The Verve & ‘Country House’ & ‘Beetlebum’ for Blur. The Sun Always Shines on T.V.’s my favorite a-ha song.

If we are counting "One Hit Wonders" as in people that people consider one hit wonders despite having more than one... The thread title is a little clumsy. "Successful Acts with One Song Way More Popular Than the Rest" would be a better way of phrasing it.

"Successful Acts with One Song Way More Popular Than the Rest" would be a better way of phrasing it. I mean, there are artists who fall under that banner who nobody considers one hit wonders too. Eminem's "Lose Yourself," 50 Cent's "In Da Club," Oasis' "Wonderwall," are all the biggest hits any of them ever had, but because of their mainsteam longevity nobody really considers them One Hit Wonders. I think the threads more about those whose one hit was so big that they're erroneously thrown in to the one hit wonder designation.

"Old Apartment" is legitimately one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Co-signed. That song f***ing slaps. I'm actually seeing them in July I gotta admit, when Steven Page left, I kinda stopped paying attention. Ed's great in his own way, but BNL was always centered around Steven for me. He's one of the most criminally underrated voices in music, equally at home in a whisper as he is belting out high notes. But more than that, his writing always had a weight in the center of it that Ed's writing tends to lack for me. Steven always has a meaning just under the surface of the silliness, a bit of grit right under the veneer. All that being said, I do believe that they are a classic Lennon-McCartney, and they have rarely done anything without the other that has been anywhere near as good. Steven has a handful of solo tunes I enjoy, but he's not quite hit the same paydirt.

Also, I just found out tonight that "Dance Hall" is by Wang Chung. Had no idea they had hits that didn't contain their name in the chorus.

Harry Nilsson's biggest hit being a song he didnt write with "Everybodys Talkin" will always be hilarious to me, dude has alot of amazing songs that HE actually wrote, 1941 for starters always gets to me.
as big as they were Buffalo Springfield had way more quality songs than "For What Its Worth" I will alwyas love "Questions" and Neil's last song for the group "Expecting To Fly" is beautiful.

Haven't revisited the UK charts from that era in a while. I recall their cover of Sly Fox's "Let's Go All The Way" getting some buzz. Yeah, that was by far their biggest MTV hit. "Homies" two years later did comparatively well too. There was a span of like 2000-2003 near the end of their Island / Def Jam* deal and the very start of a wholly independent Psychopathic** that they tried to play the industry game - showing up at award shows, doing cameos on TV shows - and it did bring them a new level of visibility even if that didn't translate to the same Billboard album chart success they had 4-5 years prior. Still impressive though. This is the same reason why when mainstream outlets cover ICP, they'll use photographs from the 'Wraith' era as they were photographed by every major news outlet at the time since they were all over the place and for many it's the only file photos of the Clowns that they have. *ICP signed to Island Records after the fallout with Hollywood Records in 1997, and then soon after Island merged with Def Jam. That's why there's randomly an Amazing Jeckyl Brothers platinum plaque seen behind Kanye West in some photos around this time. **Psychopathic had distribution deals for their label in the past to extend going beyond Detroit/the midwest - which was fairly common at the time and was the bread and butter for labels like Jive/Zomba (which the clowns signed with in 94/95) who had contemporary success with acts like E-40 and Mystikal whose local success translated into national sales.

Surely Without You was a bigger hit for Nilsson? Ironically, Badfinger, who wrote and recorded that song would have much bigger hits as I don’t think they ever released Without You as a single.

It's too bad because "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is like... One of the very best hair metal songs ever written but barely anyone remembers it. Also, the only reason anyone remembers their song "Heaven" is because of those Rock Ballads compilations. "Heaven" actually had a lot of air play in the 80s since it was more radio friendly than "Cherry Pie". It was actually bigger hit for them than "Cherry Pie", but for whatever reason the band was defined by "Cherry Pie", even though it was one of their worst songs.
