Hello all!!!
I hope everyone is doing well today!! Happy Friday, all!! We finally made it! Welcome to the weekend!
I was watching the main event match at King of the Ring 1999 today, which was Austin vs. Vince and Shane McMahon in a handicap ladder match for full control of the World Wrestling Federation.
The 1999 King of the Ring was a strange one, if I may dare say so myself. The atmosphere of it was strange; we were just getting over the horrible tragedy that occurred at the previous PPV; and the KotR tournament itself was dominated by former members of DX.
It was easily outshined by the King of the Ring the following year, even though that one had a very weird main event match as well.
Leading into the main event, Austin was granted power of CEO by Linda McMahon "stepping down" and he wanted full control of of the business. Austin dumped manure in McMahon's office and beat him up at every opportunity. Finally, Vince was fed up and requested a handicap ladder match, which Austin agreed to. The briefcase, which held the paperwork for 100% control of the corporation, was suspended high above the ring, waiting for the best man to grab it. The company was at stake at this point.
It was an awful gimmick.
Throughout the match, whenever Austin was close to securing the briefcase, the briefcase would lift high above his reach. The father/son duo emerged victorious after the briefcase was conveniently lowered for Shane.
The next night on Raw, Austin was stripped of his CEO status, although Austin had a trick up his sleeve and challenged Taker for the Heavyweight championship at the next PPV, Fully Loaded.
It was never revealed who screwed Austin over that night. I thought at first it was Big Bossman, but then it also could have been The Undertaker. Hell, it could have been that Rikishi did it ......FOR THE ROCK!
It would have been a great storyline to have it revealed that The Undertaker did it, but everyone even involved with the Corporate Ministry had a motive at that point. I guess it's one of those other mysteries of the Attitude Era like "Who was behind GTV?" and "Who trashed NOD's locker room?".
